World Day of Prayer for Vocations Saint Agnes Parish Arlington, Massachusetts The Fourth Sunday of Easter April 20-21, 2013
World Day of Prayer is observed today, Sunday, April 21, "Good Shepherd Sunday." On this day we follow the Lord's instruction to "Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest" (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2). Please pray that young men and women hear and respond generously to the Lord's call to the priesthood, diaconate, religious life, societies of apostolic life or secular institutes. You can find many resources to promote a culture of vocations on the USCCB Vocations webpage. Catholic Home Missions: One way the Catholic Home Missions Appeal works to support mission dioceses in the United States is by supporting seminarian formation in poor dioceses. Often home mission priests and lay ministers require special training to attend to the unique needs of their faith communities. Your support is needed. Please help strengthen the Church at home by making a generous gift to next week s Appeal. 2

Parish Pastoral Council Meeting, April 7, 2013: Father Flatley opened the meeting with a prayer for Pope Francis and his mission as leader of the Church. Report Marianne Hudelson, Director of Parish Outreach: The new Parish Outreach Committee began approximately six weeks ago. The Committee consists of about a dozen parishioners who represent various demographics within the Parish. The Committee has identified two segments of the population to reach; those attending Church, to help them strengthen their faith and ties to the Church, and those who attend infrequently or not at all, to provide opportunities for them to become involved through social structure where evangelization can occur. The Committee has undertaken many initiatives to foster a welcoming atmosphere. A searchable blog has been created to provide information about parish activities. The blog can be found at SaintAgnesParish.blogspot.com. In addition, a handout has been published and disseminated throughout the Church to encourage participation in parish ministries. Response to the Committee s efforts has been encouraging. Expanding the playgroup to Fidelity House on First Fridays increased participation last month. Approximately 50 people attended the Lenten Meatless Supper and Stations of the Cross. Many of the activities have a social component as a way of building community and nurturing friendships but these events also provide parishioners an opportunity for prayer and involvement in parish life. Additional events are being planned for the upcoming months, including a camping trip in Greenfield, NH. Marianne hopes that the Committee can also develop methods for reaching older members of the parish. She asked the Council for its prayers for the success of her Committee s mission. Holy Week and Easter: appreciation was expressed to our wonderful choir and to the many volunteers helped to beautify the Church and who participated in the various liturgical services throughout Holy Week and Easter. Mass of Anointing: The annual Mass of Anointing took place on Saturday, April 6. The Committee, under the leadership of Peggy Regan, was thanked for its hard work in making this Mass and luncheon a very beautiful and moving experience for participants. The Mass gave many young people, including members of the Confirmation class, an opportunity to volunteer their time in an important ministry. Lower Church ramp: several bids for the project to redesign the lower Church ramp have been received. These bids will be reviewed shortly and a contractor will be selection to undertake this task. Electronic Giving: The online giving program has been implemented. The program, which is voluntary, is very easy to use. A number of parishioners have already begun participation in the program. The Light is On for You Lenten Program Each Wednesday during Lent, 6:30 to 8:00 PM, every church in the Archdiocese offered the opportunity for parishioners to make individual confessions. At the beginning of Lent, participation in this program was light. During the last two weeks of Lent, many people came for the Sacrament. Reports for next meeting: Peggy Regan will be invited to report on the Mass of Anointing. Father Flatley closed the meeting with a prayer. Next Meeting: Sunday, May 5, 2013 at 7:00 PM. 6
