Grant Activity - Riparian Zone Management - 2016 Equipment Report created on:1/26/17 Page 6 of 11

Description Blue Earth County Water Management Plan Blue Earth SWCD Capacity Building Plan approved 8/6/15 The SWCD will use these funds to purchase equipment that will help with Riparian Zone Management activities. We plan to add equipment such as a Tractor, Trailer, Sprayer, Mobile tablets, laptop, etc. The SWCD already has a Brillion drill that it rents out but a lot of landowners are absentee or don t have access to a tractor to pull the Brillion drill to seed native grasses. By adding this equipment and a tractor the SWCD will be able to service conservation grass plantings and maintenance area habitat. Staff already spend a fair amount of time writing conservation plans, writing up seeding plans, help landowners line equipment/vendors, site inspecting, collecting invoices, and verifying establishment. We currently rent out a Brillion drill that needs to be delivered, setup and picked up. By adding the Tractor and these other items we will be able to redirect staff hours from oversite and management of conservation seeding to actually seeding the site with almost no net added staff time. Last year alone the SWCD inspected 141 RIM easements covering 4,446 acres. Upcoming conservation program signups and buffer laws will demand more seeding services. The public is constantly looking for seeding and maintenance equipment and providers in our area. This will allow us to help the public create quality habitat from the start of a program signup rather than fighting site maintenance issues down the road due to improper establishment from lack of equipment. Also the SWCD will be needing 2 new office desks for added staff to be able to adequately meet with landowners as they work on Excess Nutrient and Riparian Zone Management problems.
