EVS Where: SCI International Secretariat, Antwerp, Belgium Project: Supporting the Building Bridges Campaign, Communication & Fundraising Period: 1/10/2016 30/09/2017 For more than 95 years the international network of SCI has promoted a culture of peace by organizing international volunteering projects aimed at creating paths of social inclusion and social justice, in a constant effort to overcome cultural barriers and divisions among people and, above all, to work on the socio-political dynamics that determine them. Many SCI branches have high level experience in the implementation of projects and activities for and with refugees and asylum seekers and consequently valuable knowledge to share. In order to further collaborate and strengthen the impact and involvement SCI is in the process of launching the campaign Building Bridges (BB) in follow up to the project of the same name that was implemented in 2015. The campaign will encompass all SCI activities and projects with and for refugees and asylum seekers. In this context the International Secretariat will carry out an EVS project that will at give 2 young people the opportunity to increase their knowledge and understanding on issues surrounding refugees and asylum seekers in Europe and beyond, as well as to contribute to raising awareness of the work SCI does to overcome these divisions. The current atmosphere in Europe shows that more awareness is crucial. This project will therefore aim at two young people acquiring skills and knowledge in this area while at the same time demonstrating how volunteering contributes to more tolerance and understanding between people. The main tasks will be Communication and Fundraising tasks, divided between the 2 EVS volunteers depending on their qualifications and interests. EVS Volunteer Position A: PR & Communication (80 %) The EVS volunteer will provide support to the team at the International Secretariat of SCI as well as SCI branches and partners in the field of PR and communication. The EVS volunteer will contribute to the organisation of communication activities aimed at increased visibility of volunteering, voluntary projects and volunteers in general, and with a special emphasis on the Building Bridges Campaign. To support in ensuring the visibility of the Building Bridges Campaign activities using existing SCI communication channels internally and externally To support the implementation of SCI s Communication Plan 2016-2018; Support with the evaluation of SCI s communication activities in 2016; Permanently and pro-actively collect, store, and categorise materials from activities carried out by SCI branches, including pictures, videos, blogs, stories/ testimonies; Support the Project and Communication officer in developing and updating the website, the Volunteer Stories Blog and preparing the Annual Report Collect and generate content for the enewsletters, the website and social media platforms Manage SCI s facebook, twitter, instagram and Linkedin accounts as well as youtube and Vimeo
Follow the latest developments in social media and update the social media strategy (in agreement with the Project and Communication Officer) Prepare presentations/ documents for branches that support them in how to effectively use social media for increased visibility; To support with the Workcamp Promotion Storm for 2017 and/or other promotional activities for workcamps (in particular those labelled as Building Bridges Workcamps) and the process of exchanging volunteers for workcamps Support to local branch VIA Belgium (10 %) SCI IS is located in an office that is shared with the local Flemish branch, VIA Belgium. In VIA Belgium there is one paid staff person, and a group of activists who work on different issues, such as communication, organizing info events, fundraising activities and awareness raising events. The EVS volunteer will provide support to VIA Belgium where needed, and according to his/her own interests. The EVS volunteer will also be able to lead one workcamp of VIA Belgium during the summer months of 2017. Exact tasks to be defined in agreement with the VIA coordinator. Other (10 %) In addition to above, the EVS volunteer is expected to share the general work of the office, such as answering telephone calls, dealing with correspondence, getting in contact with partners, filing, joining Staff Meetings, and any other tasks that are connected to the work of SCI as the international staff deem necessary. A candidate aged between 18-30 who has: An interest in the topics of human rights, solidarity, refugees, volunteering and who is eager to contribute to SCI s mission of promoting a culture of peace Interest in PR and communication in an international NGO Passion and knowledge in using social media tools Good graphic design skills in software such as Indesign, Photoshop and Illustrator Good English language skills (spoken and written) And interest to work in a busy, international office and is ready to multitask Ideally the candidate will be able to start the beginning of October 2016 and able to commit for a period of 12 months after the starting date. EVS Volunteer Position B: Supporting Building Bridges (40%) As well as giving visibility to the Building Bridges Campaign, it will be very important to support the implementation of the campaign itself, to insure its success. For this support will be particularly needed in monitoring the campaign at all stages. The EVS will support the Building Bridges Campaign by: Collecting reports and materials from all the activities organised under the Building Bridges Campaign Collecting and presenting reports from projects funded by SCI s Building Bridges/Refugees Microgrant Supporting with monitoring tools for the campaign Updating the Building Bridges Campaign webpage on SCI s international website Supporting the collection and storage of knowledge related to the campaign within SCI s Members Area Fundraising (40%) The EVS volunteer will provide support to the team at the International Secretariat of SCI as well as SCI movement in the field of fundraising. The EVS volunteer will contribute to the organisation of communication and fundraising activities aimed at increasing SCI s visibility in the world as a longstanding international peace organisation, as well as raising funds for SCI to better function as an international movement. A special focus will be given to supporting the development of the Building Bridges Campaign and the funds connected to it. The EVS will support the fundraising initiatives by: Maintaining the Donate page on sci.ngo and SCI s ammado page; Creating visibility for SCI s Disaster Relief and Building Bridges/Refugee Microgrant fund Supporting the implementation of SCI s alumni project; Supporting the creation of templates and materials for correspondence with donors; Assisting in the creation of peer-to-peer fundraising on a digital platform; Researching individual donor and foundation prospects; Looking into alternative and creative ways of fundraising; Assisting in developing fundraising merchandise, materials and design work Support to local branch VIA Belgium (10 %) SCI IS is located in an office that is shared with the local Flemish branch, VIA Belgium.
