Migration. from professional Artists, or teams of Artists, in response to an architectural art commission ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY opportunity for its outpatient specialties clinic building, located in Hennepin County Medical Center is Minnesota s premier Level 1 downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota. Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center. It serves the metropolitan and extended county, its growing residential population in downtown Minneapolis, and is a safety net hospital providing care for low-income, the uninsured and vulnerable populations. HCMC s new specialties clinic building is a $220.8 million, 377,000-square-foot addition. It will consolidate 40 primary and specialty clinics currently spread across nine buildings. It will include six floors of clinics and services, housing primary, specialty care, physical and occupational therapy, a same day surgery, a Cancer Center, and skyway connection to the rest of the HCMC campus. For more detailed building information, go to: http://clinicbuilding.org HCMC s is committed to providing an exceptional patient and guest experience, and has supported Inspired Arts, it s multi-disciplinary healing arts program that champions evidence and experience-based design to transform the patient experience and promote healing and wellness. The program s Goals, Guiding Principles and Art Selection Criteria lead this commission process.

2 GUIDELINES This proposed major signature architectural Work of Art ( Commission A ) will span vertically from the first floor up to the fourth floor, with the option of extending elements onto the fifth and sixth floors. This multi-floor Work of Art will be installed in the interior spaces, with sections of the Work aligned and installed separately on each floor. To also be viewed from the front exterior, the Work s placement will flank the floor-to-ceiling wall of windows. Note: The second floor is open to the first floor, creating the possibility of a ceiling 2-story suspended Work covering the 1st & 2nd floor. Note as it relates to Artist s ability to problem solve potential site challenges: The architect has advised that the mounting of the artwork not be mechanically attached directly to the window mullion framework. Its built-in structural flexibility could create slight movement and potential damage to the artwork could occur. Instead, ceiling- to-floor frames, cables or suspended mounts are suggested. It will be the finalist Artist(s) responsibility to explore installation options during the final design process using the structural engineering parameters to assure safety and structural integrity of their Work. MEDIA RFP GUIDELINES SYMBOLIC BEACON OF HOPE LOCAL INFLUENCE PERMANENT VISIBILITY TRANSPARENCY ILLUMINATION ENGAGING UPSCALE VANDAL PROOF MULTI-STORY STRUCTURAL Sculptural media considered include, but are not limited to: glass, metal, mixed media, and projected light. The Work of Art will require a degree of transparency so day light and the downtown view are not obstructed. A lighting component needs to be integrated into the design for illumination, making it visible from the exterior afterhours. OBJECTIVES OF WORK The proposed artwork for event use/construction should: Serve as a strong visual symbol of healing and wellness that communicates the heart of HCMC s person-centered care; Provide a beautiful and engaging work of art to patients, families, employees and community reflecting our diverse cultures and communities; Create a multi-story iconic beacon of hope, able to be experienced both closely and intimately as an interior work, and viewed as an exterior architectural feature identifying and branding HCMC as downtown Minneapolis premier health care organization.
