ETNA BULLETIN No.7, February 2016 Welcome to ETNA s Bulletin! 1. 5 th International ETNA Conference at Odense, Denmark on 19th and 20th June 2017. THEMES: Promoting Cultural competence in a digital/technological world and 21st century migrants and refugees: Mass migration into Europe due to wars and ethnic conflict. For more information look up at ETNA s website http://europeantransculturalnurses.eu/news/ Please distribute to your colleagues. Thanks Dorthe Nielsen, University of Southern Denmark, for taking up this challenging task. 2. Access to Health Care for Undocumented Migrants in Belgium Since 1996, Belgium has a unique procedure granting access to health care for undocumented migrants: The urgent medical aid. If the theoretical coverage aims to cover almost all health care needs of the undocumented population, it appears that lots of barriers exist at practical level, preventing undocumented migrants from accessing the health care services. In this context, a comprehensive evaluation of this procedure was realized with the participation of the undocumented migrants, health professionals and stakeholders in 2015. This report presents the main findings of this research and recommendations to improve access to health care for undocumented Bulletin 7 February 2016. migrants in Belgium. This research was carried out by the Belgian Health Care Knowledge Center, the Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL) and the University of Ghent. Health Needs of Refugees-are we prepared? As the EU struggles to reach agreement on the management and most appropriate response to the refugee crisis, it is timely to reflect on how health professionals in Ireland can respond to those who require healthcare support on arrival. PJ Boyle, shares with us a two part article that just published in the World of Irish Nursing and Midwifery (WIN). WIN is the INMO (Irish Nursing and Midwifery Organisation s Membership Journal published monthly with an audience of over 30,000 Registered Nurses. The article outlines the experience of the HSE interdisciplinary team currently providing health assessments and support to newly arrived asylum seekers and refugees. This is the only full-time HSE team working exclusively with refugees nationally. It also discusses their care within the Irish health services. Bulletin 7 February 2016. Prepared and Issued by the ETNA Committee, 2015-17 2

The references for both articles are as follows and can be found in ETNA s website: Health Needs of Refugees- are we prepared? World of Irish Nursing and Midwifery. Vol. 23 No.9, pp 50-51. November 2015 Health Needs of Refugees- are we prepared? World of Irish Nursing and Midwifery. Vol. 23. No. 10, pp 52-53. December 2015/January 2016-01- 24 Thanks PJ Boyle for sharing these articles, Balseskin Refugee Reception Centre, Dublin, Ireland. 4. An international and interdisciplinary pilot project about different approaches of Evidence Based Practice between Belgium (bachelor in Nursing) and Lithuania (bachelor in Occupational Therapy). In the academic year 2013-2014, there was an international collaboration between Howest University of Applied Sciences, bachelor in Nursing (Bruges, Belgium) and Vilniaus Kolegija University of Applied Sciences, bachelor in Occupational Therapy (Vilnius, Lithuania). The aim was to have an interdisciplinary exchange between students in Nursing and students in Occupational Therapy and to learn to know different approaches and cultural differences in evidence based practice (EBP). Both groups of students were prepared in their home country, guided by a supervisor. The students had to choose a relevant topic to discuss and to make a poster presentation. They were divided in small groups and each group had to complete one step in the cyclic process of EBP, such as (1) formulating an appropriate research question, (2) finding literature, (3) evaluating the literature, (4) disseminating and evaluating the results (writing an abstract and making/presenting a poster. The posters were presented by the students through Skype. After the presentations, the students had the chance to ask questions to each other and to reflect on the research findings. Both students and supervisors experienced different approaches into EBP. Follow-up is needed to explore the causes of a different approach on EBP. But more important is to detect what students and lecturers/researchers can learn from different international and interdisciplinary approaches in Evidence Based Nursing/Occupational Therapy. Face-to-face interviews with the students have shown us that a powerful Bulletin 7 February 2016. Prepared and Issued by the ETNA Committee, 2015-17 3

learning environment, as used in this small pilot project, results in a bigger learning outcome than only reading textbooks. They also reported that working in groups and having a (virtual) international exchange was an added value in their curriculum. We decided to continue our project annually and to expand the project from the beginning of the academic year 2016-2017. Thanks to the authors: Wouter Decock (Howest University Of Applied Sciences) wouter.decock@howest.be Jurgita Tuitate (Vilniaus Kolegija University of Applied Sciences) jtuitaite@yahoo.com 5. RESILIENT NURSES in ACTION...PUTTING ACROSS the LEARNED COMPASSION CARE Our mission!...sitio Pulo, Kabalutan Orani Bataan Philippines, an islet so near and yet so far...with more than 300 households, more than a thousand population and in need of convenient accessible health. A risky 10minute travel by small boats just to reach the place is painstaking. The populace - olds and the young ones - don t even mind the danger; they have adjusted to the situation, but for us 9 nurses are a big challenge. The community assignment is the result of a study. On the first day the group pay courtesy call to the community heads concern and at the same time re-assessing health needs through survey. During the community assembly conducted, screened volunteers for disaster emergency rescue team was announced and consequently started the first session of the training, within an on-going 4month varied community health intervention. To reflect on, a noble profession called NURSING armed with authentic Compassion Care is what things are all about. Transcontinentally, we SALUTE all sincere health care providers!
