The Hong Kong Young Leaders Programme (YLP), supported by the Efficiency Unit of the HKSAR Government and the Hong Kong Jockey Club, was tailored for young local professionals from the government, business and civil society. Participants played a pioneering role in the creation of a network of sports hubs throughout Hong Kong which aim to be community-based, financially viable and socially inclusive. The programme was conducted over two modules, one classroom and one field-based, both aimed at leveraging the energy of local youth, setting a new precedent for public private partnerships and tapping into all forms of capital to build a network of social enterprises in Hong Kong. Promoting cross-sectoral collaboration and constructive dialogue Module Two of the YLP introduced rigorous field-based learning alongside intensive business planning in unfamiliar environments. Participants worked amongst a diverse set of peers and gathered insights and information from stakeholders including local officials, companies and NGOs, to produce a high-quality business proposal.

In addition to the field work, during Module Two participants heard from a variety of prominent guest speakers who shared their views on what it takes to be an effective leader. The first keynote speaker was Mr. Mark Tucker, CEO of AIA, who, as a former professional footballer and highly successful business executive was wellplaced to talk about the shared values of sports and leadership.

Mr. Roger Nissim (in orange), former government official at the Lands Department, sharing with participants on how land administrative practices in Hong Kong could affect the selection of sites for the sports hubs. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Executive Director Mr. Christoph Ganswindt discussing with YLP participants key elements to bear in mind when proposing the business model.

Senior GIFT mentor and Advisor Professor Hideaki Takahashi of Keio University facilitates a session on the importance of positivity and creative thinking, and how these help to create high performance teams.

Alongside him are Mr. Arif Ali (second from left), Head Coach of Shaheen and Head Coach of Chinese Hong Kong Women s National Hockey Team, and club members including Chinese Hong Kong National Hockey Team players. Participants visited Shaheen to find out more about their success in using sports as a tool for community building.

3 4 Participants were also hosted by various NGOs including the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG) who shared with participants plans for their upcoming community sports programme and gave them a tour of the Tsuen Wan Youth S.P.O.T. Ms. Fanny Yu, Supervisor of HKFYG, introducing the federation s experience in running youth sports hubs (left). Mr. Lotan Chan, Person-in-Charge of the Tsuen Wan Youth S.P.O.T. (in white), showing participants the facilities of the Youth Centre.

Mr. Gary Wong, Founder and Chairman of Inspiring Hong Kong (IHK) Sports Foundation, sharing with participants his experience working with underprivileged children (left). Alongside Gary, Mr. Zimon Chan, IHK s Chief Campaigner & Executive Director (above) and other mainly volunteer members of the IHK team have successfully created a variety of programmes, such as the tennis programme pictured here, which allow children to train with some of Hong Kong s top tennis coaches. 3

Participants exchange ideas on the operations of sports hubs and gain insights into the development of sport in Hong Kong from Mr. Mark Sutcliffe, CEO of the Hong Kong Football Association (second from right) and Head of Football Development Mr. Paul Woodland (third from right).

Participants Yiksing Yeung of CLP and Kelvin Cheung, founder of Ultd share a light hearted moment during the classroom sessions. After completing the site visits participants spent the following three days developing and refining their ideas for the business plan.
