Winter/Spring 2011 I hope this letter finds all of you well. GHSLA is moving forward quite nicely. My job is to provide you with pertinent information that will add color and illuminate professional detail to your job as a medical librarian. Although we only physically meet annually, many of us are in constant communication so our annual meeting is the best it can be. So please join us for the 2011 Annual Meeting of the Georgia Health Sciences Library Association. We will be in Savannah at the Hilton Savannah DeSoto March 10-12. For complete information please visit our website: http://www.ghsla.org/. Our goal is to provide an attractive program in an attractive location; either without the other is only half the goal. Prior to August, I had never been to Savannah can you believe it? After visiting, I fell in love with The Hostess City of the South and I m sure you will too, if you haven t already. The DeSoto Hilton was built during a lapse in Savannah zoning restrictions and its height is an anomaly for the neighborhood. Our closing reception will be in the panoramic Harborview Room on the 15 th floor. Don t miss this rare chance to really see this beautiful port city. The Hilton is strategically located so after you park your car, you won t touch it until you leave town. Our vendor fair is designed to appeal to all types of libraries, librarians and other health information professionals. Also, you ve heard about Christmas in July? Well we ll have Halloween in March with a special Ghosts & Graveyards tour scheduled for the opening night. Please take a moment to check out our agenda. Early registration ends February 17. Regarding the most important part of the conference, we have a challenging program this year. Our theme is "Students, Clinicians, and Librarians - Evolving along the information literacy continuum." We wanted to get out of the hospital and focus on library education and bibliographic instruction. Dr. Koplan and I will focus on the downside of online learning, Georgia State University s Amy Harris will speak to the challenge of nursing education, and Dr. Klatt from the Mercer University School of Medicine will talk about Information Processing for Learning in Health Care. Alisha Miles and Carolyn Klatt will present a panel discussion on library promotion and Sheila Snow-Croft will give us an update on NNLM. Eugenia Abbey will deliver our annual Miriam Libbey Lecture. Our two continuing education classes will be on PubMed and the Effective Use of E-Resources. Please take a moment to check out our agenda. Special thanks to Mike Shadix who has been my go-to guy and to Emily Lawson who took my rough ideas and created our killer theme. Also Kate Daniels, Liz Marvel and Melissa Speed get special props for being there for me. Early registration ends February 17. Will you hear about how awesome it was from others or will you be able to tell the stories yourself? Remember, these meetings are created by humans like you. Please get involved to help GHSLA retain its vitality. Todd Prusin Vice President GHSLA Update 30 (2) Winter/Spring 2011

Membership Committee Report Membership is a vital component of any successful organization. We are always looking to strengthen our membership with the recruitment of new members. If you have a colleague or friend interested in becoming a part of GHSLA, please encourage them to join. The membership form is available for download from our website at http://www.ghsla.org/membership.shtml. Through our Honorary Memberships, GHSLA is dedicated to "honoring retired health sciences library personnel or others with a commitment, dedication or service to health sciences librarianship, or the field of medicine" (from GHSLA bylaws). We invite you to nominate someone who you think deserves recognition by his or her peers as an honorary member of GHSLA. This membership is for life, and dues are waived. A nomination should include a letter stating why you think the nominee deserves honorary membership, along with a summary of their career. Nominations are approved by a majority vote of the Executive Committee. The names of those approved for honorary membership will be presented at the business session and announced in the GHSLA UPDATE. Nominations can be sent to me through the mail or email. Admissions must be submitted before February 15, 2010 for addition to our 2010 agenda. Thank you, Anna Krampl, Membership Chair Slate of Officers for 2011-2012: Nominating Committee Report President Todd Prusin (Georgia State University) Vice President TBD Secretary TBD Treasurer TBD Parliamentarian TBD UPDATE Editor Carolann Curry (Mercer University School of Medicine, Macon) Webmaster Mike Shadix (Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation) Mercer Medical School Library Savannah Campus Initiates Teddy Bear Collection By: Jane Bridges The librarians and staff at the Mercer Medical School Library in Savannah initiated a teddy bear collection for the 2010 holiday season to be distributed at the Emergency Department of Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah. Since the Mercer mascot is the Bears, it made sense for the faculty, staff and students at Mercer Medical School - Savannah to focus on bears. The fuzzy ambassadors were scheduled for distribution to ER patients and families beginning the week before Christmas.
