What is the Rotary Youth Leadership Award Conference? A guide for Rotarians, High School Counselors, Delegates and Parents Sponsored by the 47 Rotary Clubs of District 7710, RYLA is a truly unique leadership conference specifically designed for high school juniors who have demonstrated leadership potential in scholastic, athletic and civic activities Specifically developed with discussion moderators professional facilitators alumni counselors coming from many disciplines Discussions and experiential sessions focus on what leadership is; qualities of leadership team-building activities trust activities time and stress management a high and low ropes challenge course and the opportunity to complete a personality profile Our aim is to demonstrate Rotary s respect and concern for youth; provide an effective training experience for selected youth leaders and potential leaders; encourage leadership of youth by youth; recognize publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities. Delegates to the Conference are members of a chosen few, selected because of their scholastic, athletic and civic achievements as well as their personality and desire to improve themselves. The hope of Rotary is to send them home better equipped to face the world by utilizing leadership developed during these three days. Delegates to the conference are tomorrow s leaders and are selected and sponsored by local Rotary Clubs. There is no cost to the delegates or their family.. 3

Application Procedures Each Club is Guaranteed Three Slots up to the November 30 Deadline Interest in RYLA has increased dramatically and acceptance procedures are in place to insure that each club submitting properly completed applications and fees no later than November 30th is guaranteed three slots. After November 30th, those slots are released to other clubs. The fee per delegate is $325.00. Make Sure Your Club s Applications Are Properly Completed 1 - Make sure that your candidates have filled in all the Delegate Biographical Information and that both the candidate and their parents have signed the Standards of Conduct and Medical Release. We must be in possession of the original signatures. Do not submit photo copies. 2 - Let us know who you are by completing the Submission Form for the Sponsoring Rotary Club with the Rotarian contact, including phone number. 3 - Rank all your candidates in the lower right box, where #1, #2 and #3 are your first, second and third choices, remember these can be guaranteed spots. Send in as many applications as your club desires to sponsor. After November 30th, remaining places are released to clubs with more than three applicants. These applicants may be accepted based on the date received and their ranking. After everything is ready, mail to: Things to Remember RYLA Conference Selection Committee Dave Stuckey 411 James Street Carrboro, NC 27510 You can submit as many completed applications as your club desires to sponsor. We normally receive over 125 applications each year. Incomplete applications will not be processed. We will accept the first 100 properly completed and paid delegate applications. This is one event in which children of Rotarians are permitted to participate. We also encourage you to invite your delegates to your weekly meetings prior to the RYLA Conference. This will give them a taste of Rotary and the ability to meet the persons responsible for extending them this opportunity. 4

Please Note Although you should seek assistance from your local high school principals, guidance counselors or ministers when naming a delegate; please do not depend entirely on the judgment of persons who are not Rotarians. RYLA s purpose is to recognize, reward and develop proven young leaders. So please: Interview candidates, Acquaint them with Rotary, Invite them to several Rotary meetings prior to the conference, AND have them back after the conference to give a report to the club. 5

The sponsoring Rotary club is sending their delegates on a full scholarship. Being chosen to attend is an honor. It is left to each club to determine a policy regarding delegate repayment to the club s scholarship fund should the delegate choose to withdraw after the refund deadline Expectations A sponsoring Rotary Club should expect their delegates to make a presentation to the club after the conference. It is our hope all delegates maintain some contact with Rotary through Interact, Rotoract, Rotary Youth Exchange or other Rotary programs and scholarships.
