Dear Events Sponsor, The Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) is a national society with a mission to promote and enhance bioengineering and biomedical engineering knowledge worldwide for the health and well- being of humankind. An official chapter of BMES was established at UCLA in 2000 and currently has over 200 members, with membership from a large majority of students in the Department of Bioengineering. This past year, UCLA BMES also became officially affiliated by the national BMES, joining over eighty other student chapters in offering rising bioengineers opportunities to establish leadership and participate in career- advancing activities. UCLA BMES strives to ensure that any student interested in bioengineering achieves success with regards to their academic and career goals. By providing students with professional development resources, academic advising, and avenues for educational outreach, we aim to further educate and prepare bioengineering students for success in industry, medicine, research, law, entrepreneurship, and any other career path. Undergraduate and graduate students are actively involved in BMES, and the society continues to provide them with a platform through which to develop close and personal relationships with the bioengineering faculty and staff. On behalf of UCLA BMES, I invite you to look through our sponsorship package. In return for your investment in our organization, we offer publicity of your company in recognition of your donation, discounted participation in our annual Science Vendor Exposition, and many other benefits. Your support will lead to the enrichment of the educational experience of UCLA bioengineers, ensuring that the future will be filled with exceptional problem solvers, medical practitioners, and researchers who will enable our society to thrive. Thank you for your time and contribution, Andrew Jann 2015 2016 UCLA BMES President bmes.seas.ucla.edu 3 bmesucla@gmail.com

Dear Community Outreach Sponsor, With the rapid growth of the biotech field and recent medical advancements, the need for passionate and devoted scientists and engineers has never been greater. To address this need, we have looked to not only cultivate the current generation of bioengineers, but also the next. This past year, we expanded our service to the community around us by inciting excitement in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields in middle school students though a monthly after- school bioengineering mentorship program. Our vision for this program, Bioengineering Big Buddies (B 3 ), is to establish a mentor/mentee type relationship between UCLA bioengineers and middle school students in order to raise their interest in biotechnology and inspire them to become the next generation of bioengineers. Our members visit their mentees regularly to hold workshops and activities with them, as well as provide guidance and support as they begin considering what they may want to pursue in the future. Your sponsorship would aid in the development of future bioengineers that may one day become employees and leaders of your company. Any kind of support from your company/organization would be greatly appreciated, as it would help us conduct more interesting and engaging activities for the students. We thank you so much for helping us support the future of bioengineering! Sincerely, Aidan Pearigen and Eric Pan 2015 2016 UCLA BMES Community Outreach Chairs bmes.seas.ucla.edu 4 bmesucla@gmail.com

Dear Industry Representative, One of the benefits of being a student organization at UCLA, particularly one affiliated with the UCLA Department of Bioengineering, is the large pool of intelligent and dedicated students from which our members are drawn from. With the rigor of our academic classes combined with the many hands- on opportunities for research and work experience, our students and alumni emerge with the skills and mindset greatly exceeding expectation. In the past, companies have found hosting an info session with BMES to be extremely rewarding in terms of recruitment for both internships and full- time positions alike. We hope to extend these efforts to you, introducing highly competitive and interested individuals to your company. We host several informational sessions each quarter in which we invite representatives of companies ranging from biotechnology powerhouses to local biomedical device start- ups and consulting giants. We know that an important aspect of a successful and productive career lies in finding a job that is a perfect fit for both the employee and employer, and the format of these informational sessions surrounds this idea. Our infosessions typically begin with a Powerpoint presentation of your company, during which you can discuss company objectives, current projects, overall job culture, or a general description of your field. Your presentation would then be followed by a Q&A session, followed by a meet & greet during which dinner and refreshments are served as you have the opportunity to speak directly with interested applicants. At this time, students would typically approach you to ask more personalized questions, inquiring about potential opportunities and handing in resumes if you desire. The contributions of your company would result in your reach extending beyond these infosessions, spreading interest in and awareness of your company with the many benefits that come with your sponsorship. We hope to build a mutually beneficial industry- university partnership with your company, and we thank you for your support. Best, Justin Wang and Phillip Cox 2015 2016 UCLA BMES Industry Chairs bmes.seas.ucla.edu 5 bmesucla@gmail.com

Events and Programs UCLA BMES holds a variety of events every year, ranging from company site visits to class planning workshops. These events fall under three categories: career development, academic/professional skill building, and community outreach, and are all organized by dedicated board members. While we believe in the quality and effectiveness of these events in aiding our members in their personal and professional goals, we always aim to improve and optimize our events to best address our members needs. Career Development Industry Info Sessions These infosessions are structured by beginning with formal presentations followed by a meet- and- greet between students and company representatives. They provide invaluable networking opportunities for students and concentrate a small pool of competitive applicants for recruitment for both summer internship and full- time hires of top bioengineering undergraduate and graduate students. Typically 3 events are held per quarter. bmes.seas.ucla.edu 6 bmesucla@gmail.com

Graduate and Professional School Info Sessions These infosessions consist of a short presentation and a Q&A session with a panel of faculty, UCLA Bioengineering alumni, and current upperclassmen to acquaint BMES members with info and tips for various post- college pathways. Question and answer sessions allow students to receive personalized feedback regarding their individual aspirations. Annual events are specific to Ph.D., M.S., M.D., D.O., and D.D.S. programs. Academic/Professional Skill- building Getting Into Research Info Session Over 90% of bioengineering undergraduates involved in extracurricular research at some point in their years at UCLA. BMES further generates interest in research through poster presentations and lab tours. This infosession enables BMES members to learn lab techniques in various fields, such as tissue engineering, drug delivery, microfluidics, and biomedical devices Mentorship Program Upperclassmen are grouped into families of 3-4 mentors, with each mentor designated 1-2 mentees. These families are organized based on personal interests and/or career goals. The family system allows for the personal guidance bmes.seas.ucla.edu 7 bmesucla@gmail.com

associated with small colleges in combination with the many resources of a large public university. Events held by the mentorship program include four- year class planning workshops, how to get an internship events, interview workshops, etc. Community Outreach Involvement Bioengineering Big Buddies (B 3 ) This monthly mentorship program, established first with Hawthorne Middle School, aims to stimulate mentee interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), particularly in rapidly- developing bioengineering and biotechnology fields. BMES volunteers work with faculty to create interactive science modules, develop communication skills, and make a lasting impact on the West LA community. We plan to expand this educational outreach program to disadvantaged communities Local Volunteer Events BMES members actively raise funds to support various causes; past community service campaigns that we have participated in include the American Heart Association Heart Walk, Relay for Life, Dance Marathon for Pediatric AIDS We have also had collaborations with other student groups, such as Health Outreach and Pre- Medical Experience. bmes.seas.ucla.edu 8 bmesucla@gmail.com

Student Leadership BMES Board and Committees The BMES General Board is comprised of 20 upperclassmen, responsible for organization and execution of all BMES Events. Committees, comprised of underclassmen, are directly involved in planning of professional development and community outreach events. All Board and Committee members acquire organizational and leadership skills essential for potential involvement in post- graduation leadership development and rotational programs. End- of- the- Year Banquet BMES members, Bioengineering faculty and staff, as well as sponsors are invited to attend our annual awards banquet. bmes.seas.ucla.edu 9 bmesucla@gmail.com

Science Vendor Exposition This is BMES largest annual event, in collaboration with Fisher Scientific. 35+ science vendors from across the nation showcase their newest innovations and scientific tools to 450+ attendees associated with the UCLA research communities. BMES members develop networking skills by contacting company representatives and organizational skills through execution of event. Annual Bioengineering Department Open House BMES members volunteer their efforts to attract high school seniors to the UCLA Henry Samuel School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
