Temperature Concerns for Livestock Sarah M. Smith, 06.26.13 Electronic Weekly Update, Grant/Adams Youth Animal Science Program Last week I was cautioning you to pay extra attention to animals in the cold, wet, windy weather we were experiencing.---oh how things have changed! We are now getting severe hot weather warnings, saying that temperatures will be in the high 90 s this weekend and 100-110 o F at the start of next week. Not only will this hot weather be hard on people and animals, the significant weather changes we have had over this short period of time will be prime conditions for distress, decreased performance (weight gain, feed efficiency), and/or disease. Proper management and observation of animals is critical. Youth, parents, and leaders should pay close attention to management practices and the over-all well-being of their animals at temperatures above 75 degrees. However, the Thermal Danger Zone for animals and humans are temperatures above 100 degrees. Remember, animals kept outside without adequate shade are going to be in the Danger Zone when the thermometer on the porch reads 80-85 degrees. Make sure your animals have adequate shade and provide cooling and ventilations systems when necessary to help keep the animals comfortable. Fans, air inlets, and water misting or drip systems can be used to help cool animals and their surroundings. Make sure that pigs (especially white pigs) can either cover with mud or get in the shade to prevent sunburn. If you are having your lamb sheared during these hot days, you will also want to make sure you lock them in the barn for a day or two to prevent sunburn. Also, remember that even though you removed the wool, the lambs may actually feel hotter because they do not have the wool to act as insulation from the heat of the sun. Try to minimize working/handling/feeding animals during the heat. Feed early in the mornings and at night after it has started to cool. And most importantly, make sure animals have access to an adequate supply of clean, cool water continuously. Pay extra attention to the temperature of water from hoses and where nipple valves are placed (if in the sun, both water and equipment will be too hot to encourage water intake by animals).. Livestock Programs Available in the Pacific Northwest The Risk Management Agency s (RMA) Spokane Regional Office would like to remind Pacific Northwest livestock producers of the livestock risk management programs available in all counties in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. The Livestock Risk Protection (LRP) program for Fed Cattle, Feeder Cattle, Lamb and Swine, and the Livestock Gross Margin (LGM) program for Swine begins sales for the 2014 crop year July 1, 2013 and continue through June 30, 2014; or until the maximum underwriting capacity is reached. LRP coverage protects the policyholder from downward price risk during the insurance period. LGM provides protection against the loss of gross margin (market value of livestock minus feed costs). LRP and LGM do not cover any other peril (e.g., mortality, condemnation, physical damage, disease, individual marketing decisions, local price deviations, or any other cause of loss). Cattle, swine, and lamb producers are encouraged to contact a local livestock insurance agent to learn additional details. Federal crop insurance program policies are sold and delivered solely through private crop and livestock insurance companies. A list of livestock crop insurance agents is available at all USDA Service Centers throughout the U.S. or at the RMA Web site address: http://www.rma.usda.gov/tools/agent.html.
Citizenship WA Focus/Community Service Opportunity Three senior members in the Kittitas County 4-H program will be attending Citizenship Washington Focus, a national 4-H conference held in Washington, D.C. As part of their experience they are asked to create a community action plan. The plan must take a problem in our communities and demonstrate a solution. While brainstorming, these youth thought of the children medically affected locally and wondered how they could be helped. Sparrow Clubs USA is a non-profit organization which works toward helping kids help kids in medical need. The delegates have connected with the local Sparrow Clubs office and begun the planning process for "Adopting 4 Sparrows 4 Washington 4-H. In working with the Sparrow Clubs USA they will be challenging Washington 4-H members to designate community service hours already being completed throughout the year toward a Sparrow child. The information will be presented to youth attending fall District 4-H Rallies, with the hopes they will take the information home to talk about. Any kind of community service applies to Sparrows, so clubs need not change from what may have already planned. Members would then be asked to complete a voucher that includes what they did, how many hours they are contributing, and a reflection on their contribution. Please contact their chaperone Rachel George with any questions, rachelgeorge11@hotmail.com. generationon Power of Youth Contest This is a contest for young people from 13-18 years of age to share a photo and a one-sentence description of their community service online.
