Extension & Outreach VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) services will be offered once again at the Guthrie County Extension & Outreach office. These services are for people with an income of $57,000 or less and will be offered every Thursday evening through April 9th at the Guthrie County Extension Office in Guthrie Center. This service will also be offered on Saturdays, February 14 & February 28, at Guthrie County Extension. This service will be provided by IRS trained and certified volunteers. They do not prepare schedules for forms related to business profit/loss (except schedule C-EZ or C with business expenses under $10,000), capital gains/ losses, farm or rental income, employee business expenses, or moving expenses. For an appointment, please call the Guthrie County Extension Office at 641-747-2276. This program is sponsored by Guthrie County Extension & Outreach and Iowa State University Extension & Outreach, in cooperation with Iowan s for Social & Economic Development.

Commercial Manure Applicators Iowa State University Extension & Outreach, in cooperation with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, will offer the Commercial Manure Applicator Certification Workshop on Friday, February 13, from 9:00 am to noon. Guthrie County Extension & Outreach will serve as a host site for this training. Pre-registration is preferred by contacting the Guthrie County Extension Office at 641-747-2276. There is no charge for attending this workshop. Anyone not able to attend training should schedule an appointment with their DNR field office to take the certification exam. Always laugh when you can, it s cheap medicine Private Pesticide Applicator Private Pesticide Applicator will be offered at the Guthrie Activity Center on Thursday, February 12, at 1:30 pm. There is a fee of $20. To find out your current certification status, call the IDALS Pesticide Bureau at 515-281-8591. To become certified initially, you must take the exam offered by the IA Dept. of Ag & Land Stewardship (IDALS). A Study Guide (PAT 1) is available for purchase at the Extension Office. One way to renew your certification is to pass the certification test every 3 years. A second way is to attend a private applicators continuing instruction course each of the 3 years during your renewal cycle. Please call our office at 641-747-2276 with questions or to register. Spring 2015 Commercial Pesticide Applicator Schedule Following is the program schedule for the Spring 2015 Continuing Instruction Course season for Commercial Pesticide Applicators: February 10 Commercial Ag Weed, Insect, Disease Management, 9:00, $35 February 18 Seed Treatment, 9:00 am, $35 March 4 Ornamental and Turf Applicators, 9:00 am, $35 March 24 Certified Handlers, 9:00 am, $35. If you are interested in attending any of these sessions, please contact the Guthrie County Extension and Outreach Office at 641-747-2276.

Newly Elected Extension Council Officers Four officers were elected during the Guthrie County Extension Council organizational meeting Jan. 21. The nine-member council annually elects officers to comply with Iowa law. Jim Calvert, Guthrie Center, is the newly-elected chairperson. Calvert will preside at all meetings of the extension council, have authority to call special meetings and perform duties performed and exercised by a chairperson of a board of directors of a corporation. Barb Gigar, Guthrie Center, was elected vice chairperson. Sheree McClellan, Guthrie Center, was elected secretary; and has the responsibility of keeping the minutes of all extension council meetings and signing required papers for the council. The council elected Erica Tunink, Guthrie Center, to the treasurer position. The treasurer receives, deposits, has charge of all of the funds of the extension council, and pays and disburses funds. The treasurer insures an accurate record of receipts and disbursements and submits reports to the extension council. Mike Thomas, Guthrie Center, was appointed by the Council to serve through December, 2016, filling the vacancy created when Bill Messinger moved out of the county. Thomas is a past Guthrie County Extension Council member, serving from 2011-2014. Soil and Insect Management Workshop A Soil and Insect Management Workshop will be offered on Monday, February 16, at Cedar Valley Produce Auction warehouse, 18072 Addison Ave., Elma, Iowa. This workshop will focus on various cover crops. Their management aspects, attributes and effect on nutrient cycling and soil quality and health. ISU Extension & Outreach horticulture specialists Joe Hanan and Patrick O Malley are on the workshop agenda, plus Ajay Nair, Assistant Professor with the ISU Department of Horticulture. Registration starts at 10 am and the workshop ends by 3 pm. The cost is free, but registration is required by February 10 for lunch.
