Welcome from the Every Woman Matters Program Thank you for your continued dedication to the Every Woman Matters program. It s time to celebrate your value, skills, ability and perspectives that you offer to program clients, as well as to individuals and communities with whom you work; and to take time to learn up-to-date information. This year we welcome you to the 2007 Every Woman Matters Provider Conference. We are proud to offer you a wonderful, yet cost-effective conference situated throughout the state at six different sites. Come and enjoy the learning experience; we look forward to having you, our providers, join with us to make this a great conference. Audience: Nurses and Medical Assistants from clinics offering Every Woman Matters Program services are invited to attend this continuing education program. Other interested staff from these clinics may also attend. Conference Purpose: To enhance the knowledge of clinic staff to help Nebraskans live healthier lives. Conference Goals: 1. Present an in-depth look at the status of breast cancer, colorectal cancer and cardiovascular disease in Nebraska. 2. Provide strategies that clinics offering Every Woman Matters Program services can utilize to reduce the impact of breast cancer, colorectal cancer and cardiovascular disease on all Nebraskans. Drop-In Sessions: Programmatic information will not be a part of the Continuing Education Conference agenda. Every Woman Matters program staff will be available at the conference sites to answer questions regarding policies, procedures, and paperwork during the Informal Drop-In Sessions. Registration Fee: There is a $10.00 registration fee to attend this program. Pre-registration is required. Registration will not be processed until payment is received. Nursing Credit: The University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing Continuing Nursing Education is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. This activity is provided for 3.3 contact hours under ANCC criteria. Provided for 4.0 contact hours under Iowa Provider #78. Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider #13699 for 4.0 contact hours. Participants must attend the entire activity to receive full credit. If a participant arrives late or departs early, only partial credit will be awarded. Program Presenters William C. Minier, MD is the Vice President of Medical Policy and Medical Director for the BlueCross BlueShield of Nebraska in Omaha since April 2007. He also served as consulting Medical Director with BlueCross BlueShield of Nebraska since 2003. Dr. Minier is board certified by the American Academy of Family Practice and has practiced in Lincoln and Omaha since 1975. He was a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) from 1996 to 2007. In collaboration with the Every Woman Matters Program, Dr. Minier served as a research investigator for projects through the UNMC Department of Family Medicine Research. The projects focused on working with Nebraska clinics to assess and develop tools for office reminder systems to increase the delivery of preventive screening services. From 2001 to 2007 Dr. Minier was also Medical Director of Florence Health Care Center, a 130 bed skilled nursing and extended care facility. For the past four years, he has served as Chair of the Every Woman Matters Medical Advisory Committee and is a key member of the Committee s Cardiovascular/Diabetes Subcommittee. Alan G. Thorson, MD is a colon and rectal surgeon with Colon & Rectal Surgery Inc. in Omaha. He holds medical staff appointments in seven Nebraska hospitals. He is the second vice president of the National Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society for 2007, past president of the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery and has served on the Program, Continuing Medical Education and Outcomes Measurement Committees for the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. He is Director of Residency Training in colon and rectal surgery and Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at Creighton and the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Dr. Thorson has given many presentations in Nebraska, nationally and internationally. He has authored numerous journal articles, book chapters, posters and videotapes, primarily related to colorectal cancer. He has received the American Medical Association Physician s Award and his name has appeared on The Best Doctors in America. Dr. Thorson is a member of the Every Woman Matters Medical Advisory Committee. He has been instrumental in the development of the Nebraska Colon Cancer Screening Program.
