Christiana Care's Helen F. Graham Cancer Center near Newark Bayhealth's Milford Memorial Hospital Cardiac surgery procedures include coronary artery bypass grafts and heart valve repair and replacement. Interventional cardiology services include therapeutic cardiac catheterization and balloon angioplasty. Kent General s two-story Women s Center provides state-of-theart women s services and improves high-risk deliveries and critical care to neonatal infants. All maternity rooms are private. Patients who meet certain criteria may also participate in Bayhealth s cancer clinical trials. Kent General was the first facility in Delaware to offer IMRT treatment for certain cancers, and it offers Trilogy, an advanced system for image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery. Individuals needing orthopedic and rehabilitative services will find it all at Kent General Hospital. The 16-bed designated Center for Orthopedics provides post-surgical care for patients who have had bone or joint surgery. Kent General also offers physical, occupational, speech and aquatic therapy services on an outpatient basis. Home care services are also available. Diagnostic services continue to grow at Kent General. In 2009 Bayhealth implemented full-field digital mammography at all locations providing mammography services. Other services include open MRI, PET CT, and general X-ray services. Kent General s other services include a new Wound Care Center, Sleep Disorders Center, respiratory and neurodiagnostic services, and Lifestyles Fitness Center. An outpatient pharmacy is available to serve patients discharged from the Emergency Department, sameday surgery or other hospital clinics, and three new retail stores opened in 2008 for the convenience of patients and visitors. Milford Memorial s Total Joint Center opened in February 2006 to provide specialized orthopedic care for patients recovering from joint replacement surgeries in a patientcentered, healing environment. Christiana Care's Wilmington Hospital PET and CT scans, MRI (including open MRI at the Outpatient Imaging Center), nuclear medicine and EKG tests, as well as laboratory and X-ray services. Mothers-to-be can benefit from the warmth and convenience of giving birth and recovering in the same room, the Labor, Deliver, Recover and Post-Partum Suite. In January 2002 a comprehensive, 12,000-square-foot cancer center opened, providing radiation therapy and chemotherapy services under one roof, as well as the opportunity to participate in clinical trials. The Inpatient Rehabilitation Center at Milford Memorial is a program unique to southern Delaware. It offers a comprehensive therapy program dedicated to the treatment of individuals impaired by stroke, neurological disorders, accidents, arthritis and other disabling impairments. Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, the Inpatient Rehabilitation Center received a 2007 W.L. (Bill) Gore Award of Excellence. Milford Memorial s many other services include a Sleep Disorders Center, Lifestyles Fitness Center and other rehabilitation services, including occupational therapy, speech pathology and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. Beebe Medical Center 424 Savannah Road, Lewes, 645-3300 beebemed.org Beebe Medical Center is a not-for-profit community hospital with 210 licensed beds. Specialized service lines include cardiac and vascular, oncology, orthopedics, and women s health. Beebe Medical Center operates an open-heart surgery program in affiliation with Christiana Care Health System. It also has an Interventional Cardiology program, a round-the-clock, hospitalist program and a multi-disciplinary cancer center offering medical oncology and radiation oncology services and surgical oncology. Beebe s medical staff consists of more than 200 physicians and practitioners representing 40 specialties. Beebe Medical Center operates Lab Express, diagnostic imaging and physical therapy outpatient services in Lewes, Milton, Millville, Millsboro, Georgetown, Long Neck and Rehoboth. Hospitals, continued Dover Behavioral Health System Beebe s Emergency Department in Lewes is a Level III trauma center and from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day Weekend the Beebe Emergency Center on Del. 26 in Millville provides services to visitors and residents. Beebe participates in many community events annually, including the American Cancer Society s Relay for Life and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, the March of Dimes walk and the American Heart Association's Heart Walk. The Community Health department provides cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, osteoporosis and other free screenings throughout the area. Support programs include an Alzheimer s and caregivers support group, diabetes education and support groups, a Parkinson s disease support group, the Mended Heart program for cardiac patients, and the Better Breathers Club for those with pulmonary disease. Christiana Care Health System Christiana Care, a nonprofit leader in healthcare, has more than a 100-year tradition of providing a full range of high-quality healthcare to Delaware and surrounding communities. Christiana Care has two acute-care hospitals, Wilmington Hospital in downtown Wilmington and Christiana Hospital in the Stanton area. A free regular shuttle service transports patients and visitors between them. With more than 10,000 employees, Christiana Care is the largest private employer in Delaware and the 10th-largest employer in the Philadelphia region. This past fiscal year, Christiana and Wilmington hospitals admitted nearly 55,000 patients, making them two of the busiest hospitals in the nation. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has designated the organization as a National Community Center of Excellence in Women s Health. For the past two years, Christiana Care has received a Best Hospital ranking from U.S. News & World Report and has been named a Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospital Performance Leader. The Eugene du Pont Preventive Medicine & Rehabilitation Institute, on the grounds of a former du Pont estate, is the headquarters for Christiana Care s prevention and disease management programs. Christiana Care s Visiting Nurse Association has been taking care of homebound Delawareans since 1922. Services available at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital include critical and emergency care, maternity and women s health, diagnostic and interventional cardiology, a certified stroke center, a vascular center and a full array of outpatient and therapy services. The hospital provides 24-hour emergency care to the residents of western Sussex County and is a certified Level III trauma center. In fiscal 2009 the hospital treated nearly 5,500 inpatients, provided outpatient services and testing for more than 60,000 patients, performed over 2,500 outpatient surgeries and saw nearly 33,000 patients in the emergency room. In 2009 Nanticoke Memorial Hospital completed a successful St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington Select Specialty Hospital-Wilmington Joint Commission Accreditation survey, the gold standard in healthcare. Nanticoke s Cancer Care Center partnered with Peninsula Regional s Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute to allow patients access to a more comprehensive array of cancer services and provide patient access to clinical trials. Nanticoke received re-accreditation with accommodation for its Cancer Care Center, added many new services and upgraded technology. In 2008 St. Francis Hospital launched the Peripheral Vascular Institute, which offers a multidisciplinary team approach to early diagnosis and treatment of peripheral vascular problems. St. Francis is the first and only hospital in Delaware to offer new Diamondback 360 Orbital Atherectomy technology, which is designed to remove plaque including calcium in the legs. The St. Francis Heart Center is beating national averages with faster treatment, fewer complications, shorter recovery times and better results for your heart. The St. Francis Heart Center provides a full range of cardiac services, from expanded cardiac catheterization services to a broad range of treatment options, including bypass and other surgery and rehabilitation. St. Francis is a full-service community hospital, and women s health is one of its specialties. In 2008 the hospital introduced the St. Francis Emergency Medical Services department, which holds the city of Wilmington s 911 contract. Another vital part of the healthcare system is the Franciscan Care Center at Brackenville. The center provides long-term care and restorative nursing care, along with rehabilitation services. Other services offered at the Wilmington campus include 24-hour emergency services with Level 4 trauma designation with fast-track minor emergency care, Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence, wound care, a sleep-neurodiagnostics center, pain center, home care, rehabilitation and imaging services. Community outreach efforts consist of the Center of Hope, a family practice center in Newark, the Tiny Steps prenatal program for low-income pregnant women, and the St. Clare Van, which provides medical care to the uninsured. Construction was completed in 1950, making the Wilmington VAMC the ninth VA hospital to open after World War II. Since its inception, the Wilmington VAMC s mission is providing quality health services to Veterans and as a healthcare teaching entity. The organization is also known as the VA Delaware and Southern New Jersey Healthcare System, recognizing its far-reaching geographic and clinical efforts and responsibilities. Wilmington VA Hospital The Wilmington Delaware campus consists of the 60-bed Medical Center, a 60-bed Community Living Center (CLC), previously known as a nursing home, and a Veterans Benefits Administration facility. The organization also operates five community-based outpatient clinics serving southern Delaware and southern New Jersey. The Medical Center is a Clinical Referral Level 2 complexity facility providing a full range of clinical services with state-of-the-art technology. Comprehensive healthcare is provided through primary and long-term care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics and extended care. Wilmington VAMC is a part of a regional network of nine Veterans Affairs facilities in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The Wilmington VA reaches out to military personnel returning from Iraq and Afghanistan to help them make a seamless transition to veterans healthcare via the Post Deployment Health Risk Assessment program. VA outreach efforts also include letters and phone calls to recently discharged servicemen and women. Services include outpatient substance abuse and mental health care, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and intensive case management. Wilmington also works with the Vet Center offering readjustment services to veterans, focusing primarily on military trauma and family issues counseling. VAMC Wilmington is fully accredited by the Joint Commission, an independent, not-for-profit accrediting organization, the College of American Pathologists and the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. The Wilmington VAMC is affiliated with Thomas Jefferson University, the University of Maryland, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and the Pennsylvania School of Optometry. Residents rotate through general medicine, neurology, general surgery and ophthalmology. More than 288 residents, interns, and students train at the Wilmington VAMC each year. Various allied health training programs support nursing, medical technology, occupational therapy, dietetics, dental hygiene/therapist, audiology and social work. Generally, anyone who served at least two years in active military service and was discharged with any rating other than dishonorable is eligible for VA benefits and healthcare services.
