Do you want the opportunity to develop a creative, innovative presentation that could appear on the Money Stuff website and even win you a share in a cash prize pool of $16,000? Take the Money Stuff Challenge! The 2015 Money Stuff Challenge provides NSW students, in years 8-10, with the opportunity to develop a creative presentation which meets the learning needs of your commerce syllabus. The competition will challenge you to learn how to best avoid the pitfalls of being a modern consumer. Using this knowledge, you are asked to consider relevant consumer behaviour by selecting a fair trading consumer issue, identifying a clear message and developing it into a creative, entertaining and informative presentation which appeals to your classmates and peers.

Who can enter? The Money Stuff Challenge is open to NSW high school students in years 8-10. You can work individually or in a group (maximum of four students per group). What can I enter? Your entry must focus on a fair trading consumer issue and address the task outline found in the assessment task. You must develop a clear and factually correct message that is relevant to young consumers. And it must not breach copyright more on that over the page. Your entry must be submitted in electronic format only. Some possible entry types are: short film (maximum 2 minutes in length) radio play or short story (maximum 2 minutes in length) website (provide URL address) electronic magazine or comic strip (e.g. in pdf format). Acceptable entry file formats are: Video and audio (max. 2 mins in length) avi, flv, mov, mpeg, mpg, mp3, mp4, wav, wmv Image files gif, jpeg, jpg, pdf, png, tif, tiff Website URL address What can I win? Both you and your school have the chance to share in a cash prize pool of up to $16,000! Your teacher will also be in the running for a prize and can earn a cash prize for your school by demonstrating a high level of commitment to helping students understand consumer issues. An independent judging panel will award prizes in the following categories: Winner, Metropolitan schools $250 for each student and $2000 for their school Winner, Regional schools $250 for each student and $2000 for their school Highly commended, Metropolitan schools (three to be awarded) $150 for each student and $500 for their school Highly commended, Regional schools (three to be awarded) $150 for each student and $500 for their school Teacher Prize, Metropolitan schools $500 for their school Teacher Prize, Regional schools $500 for their school People s Choice Winner, Metropolitan schools $150 for each student and $500 for their school People s Choice Winner, Regional schools $150 for each student and $500 for their school And no matter what, all students who submit an entry individually or in a group will receive a certificate of participation for their efforts. Important: Make sure you provide clear instructions on how to access or view your entry. Student Guide / 3

What will the judges look for? The judges will assess how well your presentation addresses the assessment task provided to you by your teacher using the following points as a guide. Relevance Demonstrates an in-depth knowledge of consumer behaviours relevant to young people through the selection of an age appropriate consumer message. Language used and chosen medium is appropriate for this audience. Is on a topic that is covered on the NSW Fair Trading website. Originality Delivers the message creatively and quickly grabs the attention of the target audience. Has an innovative and engaging design and uses appropriate technology well. Demonstrates evidence of original thought and in-depth research; in contrast to slabs of material that may have been cut and pasted from secondary sources. Quality Delivers a clear consumer message using factually correct information. Has evidence of high quality and effective work practices including attention to detail. Does not breach copyright or involve plagiarism. (see more information below) Effectiveness Assist in helping other young people understand the issue and influences the choices young people might make as a consumer. Uses a distinctive and creative, yet practical presentation mode. Could the entry actually be used to spread the consumer message? Copyright information Entries into the Money Stuff Challenge must not breach copyright in any way. Copyright provides legal protection for people such as song writers, photographers and authors who express their ideas and information in various forms including music, lyrics, images, photographs, and books. Copyright creators, the people who wrote and performed the song, or the person who took the photograph or the company that owns the brand image, have a number of exclusive rights over their material under copyright law. These rights mean that it is illegal for someone to reproduce this work without obtaining specific permission. There are special provisions associated with copyright for research and educational purposes. However, as entries into the Money Stuff Challenge may be published in the public domain on the Money Stuff website or other places, entries must not breach copyright in any way. For example, if an entry contained any part of a piece of music from a CD or the radio, or an image from the internet, without specific permission from the copyright owner, the entry will be disqualified. Entries must also not include brand names, store names, logos or other trademarks, which are the property of or represent existing commercial businesses. For example, if video footage is filmed in a shopping centre, students should ensure they do not include store signage or any other identifying imagery. Use our copyright checklist as a guide to make sure your entry is not in breach: My presentation contains my own creations, including images, text, music and/or performances. I have used creative commons material, such as images or music, in my presentation and I have appropriately referenced the copyright owner. Student Guide / 4

Text I have used my own words, in either written or performed presentations. I have not copied and pasted written text from someone else s work, including online material or content that appears in a publication or magazine. Where I have researched and used quotations for certain sections of text I have appropriately referenced the author/creator. Music I have written, performed and/or recorded my own music. I have NOT used music or lyrics written or performed by someone else, such as a track from my favourite artist. I have not reproduced someone else s music in anyway, by changing the tempo or lyrics, or recording my own version of the track. Making changes to something won t avoid a copyright infringement. I understand that buying a song to listen to is not the same as purchasing the right to reproduce the song. Images I have used my own images (photos or artwork). My presentation does not contain brand names, logos, store names or other trademarks of existing commercial businesses? Think a branded t-shirt eg. Nike, or signage out the front of your favourite shop. What resources are available? We work and consult with teachers to make sure our talks are relevant to their students. We can visit schools and present tailored talks on a wide range of consumer issues.
