AWARDING INNOVATION IN RENEWABLE ENERGY AND SUSTAINABILITY

Photo by: Ryan Carter, Philip Cheung / Crown Prince Court - Abu Dhabi The Zayed Future Energy Prize is an annual award, established by the United Arab Emirates leadership to recognise and award excellence in renewable energy and sustainability. Launched in 2008 and managed by Masdar, the Prize represents the vision of the late founding father of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who championed social, economic and environmental sustainability as an integral part of UAE history and heritage. For more information on the Prize, its categories and past winners, please visit www.zayedfutureenergyprize.com

THE CATEGORIES AND CRITERIA The total prize fund of US$4 million is distributed amongst five categories: Large Corporation: Recognition award Small and Medium Enterprise (SME): $1.5 million Non-Profit Organisation (NPO/NGO): $1.5 million Lifetime Achievement: $500,000 Global High Schools: $500,000, divided into up to $100,000 across five regions (The Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania) Each category is evaluated based on four criteria: Impact Innovation Leadership Long-term Vision

LARGE CORPORATION This category is open to large corporations that have made a significant contribution to renewable energy and sustainability. A strong candidate in this category will have a clear vision for the long-term future of energy and a coherent, financially and ecologically sustainable strategy for its own role in bringing about this future. It already receives significant revenues from clean energy and is experiencing strong growth in its clean-energy related business areas. The company and its management have exhibited strong thought leadership at the highest levels of the industry and are active in promoting sustainable business practices. To be eligible for this Category, nominees must be corporations with revenues exceeding $100m per year. Enterprises with lower revenues may apply for the SME/ NPO category.

THE CATEGORIES SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISE (SME) This category is open to small and medium-sized enterprises. As an applicant, the SME should have successfully introduced an innovative and distinctive solution to the renewable energy and sustainability industry. The SME should also have a clear plan for furthering that technology or solution. Should the business be in its early days, it would have to demonstrate a clear short and long-term vision. To be eligible for this category, candidates should be profitseeking enterprises with less than $100m in annual revenues. Companies with higher revenues may apply for the Large Corporation category. Alternatively, any company officially defined as an SME under national law in their country of origin may be included in this category.

NON-PROFIT ORGANISATION (NPO/NGO) As a candidate, a Non-Profit Organisation/Non-Governmental Organisation (NPO/NGO) should have made a clear technical, organisational or social impact on the world of renewable energy or sustainability. This may include the dissemination of a particular solution as well as the advancement of technical knowledge, awareness-raising and policy development. A strong candidate should demonstrate inspirational, impactful and innovative work. The criteria for this category has been changed significantly from previous years. From 2014 onwards, emphasis will be placed on candidates more directly involved in issues of energy access and human impact. This category is open to not-forprofit organisations. Any NPO, industry association, research organisation, or international body may apply, provided that its operations have a direct impact on the renewable energy and sustainability industries.

THE CATEGORIES LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT Nominees may come from a variety of backgrounds, including academic, political, technical or business fields. A strong candidate will have made an exceptional impact on the industry or broader society with distinct personal achievements over at least a decade. They should be an inspirational individual, and through their leadership, the impact of their work will have reached far beyond their own actions and benefited the lives of many people. This category is open to an individual with an outstanding record of achievement in the renewable energy and sustainability sectors. Note that deceased people are ineligible for the prize, as are all currently serving politicians.

GLOBAL HIGH SCHOOLS The primary aim of the Global High Schools category is to inspire future generations across the world to be responsible, sustainable citizens. The Prize hopes to encourage young people to learn about sustainability and clean energy from an early age. The award in this category is not given for past achievements but will enable winning schools to develop clean energy projects of their own. Each school will submit a detailed proposal for a project and the Prize will fund the project s completion. The proposed project should promote renewable energy and sustainability which may include improvements in energy or water efficiency, or a reduction in waste with clear, measurable benefits. The category is open to all high schools with students between 11-19 years old. The application must be supported by the school and its management. One school will win in each of the five regions: the Americas, Europe, Africa, Oceania, and Asia. Each regional winner will receive up to $100,000. The final amount will depend on the project cost information in the proposal.

EVALUATION PROCESS

The evaluation of each submission to the Prize consists of a four-stage process. Each category is evaluated according to our four criteria: Impact, Innovation, Leadership and Long- Term Vision. The weighting of each criterion varies according to the category. Stage 1: A reputed international research and analysis firm conducts due diligence on all our submissions to ensure that they meet the conditions of the Zayed Future Energy Prize. Stage 2: The Review Committee meets to evaluate and score entries to the Large Corporation, Small and Medium Enterprise, Non- Profit Organisation and Lifetime Achievement categories that remain following due-diligence and forms a shortlist for the Selection Committee. Stage 3: The Selection Committee appraises each entry shortlisted by the Review Committee and agrees on a list of finalists. The Global High Schools Committee meets to evaluate, score and select the finalists from submissions to the Global High Schools category that remain following due-diligence. Stage 4: The Jury meets in person to deliberate the entries and elect the winner in each category. The final decision is unanimous.
