The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine Psychiatry Postgraduate Conference and Meeting of the Iowa Psychiatric Society: Impulse Dyscontrol: Money, Sex, and Aggression Friday, November 5, 2010 Marriott Coralville Hotel & Conference Center 300 E 9th Street Coralville, Iowa Sponsored by: Iowa Psychiatric Society A District Branch of the American Psychiatric Association Department of Psychiatry

Intended Audience Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Social Workers, Nurses, Physicians Assistants, Resident Physicians, Medical Students Purpose Impulse dyscontrol is a common and vexing clinical problem with the potential for serious medical, social, and legal consequences. In spite of this, disorders of impulse control often remain under-recognized and untreated. As knowledge of these phenomena develops, they are being considered for reclassification in the current revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders. As knowledge in the field evolves, treatment options are also emerging. Expert faculty will discuss the phenomenology of impulse control problems related to gambling, spending, sexual behavior, and aggression. New legislation in Iowa this year requires hospitals to notify law enforcement of the discharge of certain psychiatric patients charged with or suspected of a crime. This hot topic will be addressed along with a review of confidentiality law. Educational Objectives Upon completion of this conference, participants should be able to: Describe a differential diagnosis of impulse dyscontrol, including current classification in DSM-IV and proposed changes for DSM-5. Describe key clinical features of impulse dyscontrol related to gambling, shopping, and sexual behavior. Compare the psychopathology and treatment of impulse control disorders such as pathological gambling with that of substance use disorders. Discuss a plan of treatment for various impulse dyscontrol problems, including pharmacologic and psychotherapeutic treatment options. Assess the effect of recently passed mental health discharge notification on patients, hospitals, and mental health providers.
