EXECUTIVE OVERVIEW In mid-august, Memphis will once again host the Annual Hank Aaron Celebrity Sports Weekend, which benefits the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and LeMoyne-Owen College. Thanks to the Ad-In Tennis Association, the founder of the event, and the wonderful community leaders who serve on various committees, we expect this year to be the most spectacular ever! Approximately, 3,000 Memphians participate in the Hank Aaron Celebrity Sports Weekend and tens of thousands more will be aware of this special weekend via media coverage and promotion on radio and TV. Through this partnership, your company will be making a commitment to education and improving the lives of young men and women in the greater Memphis community and beyond. You will become involved with an institution that has produced a large percentage of the teachers, attorneys, clergies, elected officials, and other professionals who now live and work in this area and around the country. Our faculty and administration are committed to providing a nurturing and challenging environment in which students can pursue their goal of attaining a college education. LeMoyne-Owen College is one of 39 UNCF colleges and universities in the country and one of the oldest colleges in the state of Tennessee. The Weekend s activities are for everybody! LEMOYNE-OWEN COLLEGE AT A GLANCE LeMoyne-Owen College is a private, historically black liberal arts institution, distinguished by its diverse faculty, rigorous academic programs, and success in preparing students for professional careers, leaderships, and services in the local and global community. LeMoyne-Owen is affiliated with the United Church of Christ and the Tennessee Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention. Accreditation: LeMoyne-Owen College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097; Telephone number 404-679-4501) to award the baccalaureate degree. History: The history of LeMoyne-Owen College began as early as 1862, when Lucinda Humphrey, a nurse from Chicago, began teaching freed men (former slaves) in the basement of the old Overton Hotel. The hotel had been used as a hospital during the Civil War era. Before President Lincoln even signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, Humphrey taught Blacks, which were then called contraband Negroes, the fundamentals of reading. Eventually, the classes became a part of Lincoln Chapel, which became the Lincoln Chapel School under the auspices of the American Missionary Association. In 1871, the school was renamed LeMoyne Normal and Commercial School in honor of philanthropist Dr. Francis Julius LeMoyne. LeMoyne donated $20,000 to help rebuild the school after it was destroyed by a fire during the race riots in Memphis in 1866. In 1934, the state of Tennessee chartered the school as a four-year, degree-granting institution. Its name was then changed to LeMoyne College. Thirty-four years later, in 1968, LeMoyne merged with Owen College, which combined two institutions that valued strong traditions in education and religion. Owen College was named after S. A. Owen, the president of the Tennessee Baptist Missionary and Education Convention. Faculty: Two thirds of full-time faculty hold a doctorate or terminal degree in their fields.
