Phase I Local Scholarships Instructions Begins Nov 8, 2017 s DUE January 5, 2018 Over $158, 000.00... that s how much LOCAL money Shelby students were awarded last year. The following scholarships are available to Shelby students ONLY. Please note that the $ amount for each scholarship could vary from year to year. 1. Read the listing of local scholarships and determine the scholarships for which you qualify based on the column. If you turn in an application for a scholarship whose criteria includes a specific college major and you change your major, you must tell Mrs. Lerback as soon as possible. 2. All Phase I scholarships use the Standard application. Access this application on the SHS Guidance Office website link titled Standard for Local Scholarships. Save a blank copy to your google drive. Just change the name of the scholarship at the top for each you re applying for as you print each one. Be sure to use the complete name of the scholarship as listed. your essay and staple it to the standard application. 3. Think through your essays. Many scholarships that require the standard application only ask for the standard essay. Some scholarships have a specific unique to that particular scholarship. Edit and proofread your essay. Have someone else proofread your essay too. Be honest and sincere in the content of your essay, but now is NOT the time to be modest. 4. Staple any requested supporting materials (noted in column 3) to the application. 5. Return all materials by to the SHS Guidance Office by Friday, January 5, 2018. You may turn them in early. Each scholarship has its own bin or folder. It is YOUR responsibility to place each scholarship in the appropriate folder or bin.

ARRINGTON Millicent Joan Arrington Excellence in English Scholarship Millicent Joan Arrington taught English at Shelby High School for 27 years, retiring during the 1980 s. She was a talented, dedicated senior English teacher who instilled in her students a desire to write well. Ms. Arrington bequeathed a sum of money to recognize an academically qualified college bound Shelby High School student with an excellence in the subject of English. Amount: To be determined. BAIRD THE ERIC T. BAIRD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Requirements for this scholarship are: 1) Will attend a four-year college. 2) Actively involved in school activities such as athletics, music, clubs, art, theater, FFA, Etc. 3) Commitment to community through church, community service, civic organizations, etc. 4) Minimum GPA of 3.0 for the first three years of high school. 5) Please write a paragraph on: In your future, what ways do you plan on giving and helping others in our society. $1,000 BETA MU BETA MU SORORITY SCHOLARSHIP This service organization will offer a scholarship to a female student who will enter a human services occupation that will involve helping children, such as nursing, education, or social work. Standard : Amount: 2@$500. BLY ANN BLY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Ann Bly was a 1973 graduate of Shelby Senior High School as well as a former employee of the school system, spending most of her years as an elementary librarian. She took great care of her books, her students, her health, and her family and friends. In addition to the standard essay, students should also write one detailed paragraph (or more) explaining how they have exhibited strong moral character or have demonstrated a sincere concern for others. Preference will be given to a student going into a helping profession. Amount: $1,000 CLINE, H MAYOR HENRY CLINE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Henry Cline didn't have much as he grew up but he believed in hard work and with that and determination to better his life he accomplished much. One of his favorite accomplishments was to serve 3 terms as Shelby's first full-time Mayor. Henry believed that someone in that position was to be a public servant rather than following his/her own agenda. His daughter Linda is proud to present this scholarship. Applicants for this scholarship must have at least a 3.0 grade point average and be planning on going in to some form of public service such as law enforcement, fire fighting, teaching, etc. Amount: $1000. CLINE, L THE LEON AND MILDRED CLINE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP One female and one male will receive a $2,000 scholarship based on good character and strong academics, and consideration whether or not the individuals have exhibited a financial need for the scholarship. DICK MARY ANN DICK WOMEN S ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is in memory of Mary Ann Dick, a life-long golfer and supporter of the girls athletic teams. The applicant must have participated in athletics or cheerleading during her junior or senior year of high school. There are no restrictions on college major. Selection will be based on citizenship, academic performance, and an essay that addresses the question, How did your participation in athletics influence your high school education? : Standard, plus above essay. Amount: To be determined EAGLES FRATERNAL ORDER OF EAGLES SCHOLARSHIP Applicants should rank in the upper 40% of the class and show financial need. In addition, he or she must have the characteristics of being a good citizen in the community and the school, being cooperative and willing and able to take responsibility. Standard application. Amount: To be determined. GAMMA BETA SORORITY GAMMA BETA SORORITY SCHOLARSHIP A scholarship sponsored by the Gamma Beta Sorority does not restrict senior applicants due to their college major or career choice, but does, however, require the applicant to have at least a 3.0 grade point average. Standard application. Amount: 2 @ $500 HAMILTON THE PAUL DOUGLAS HAMILTON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship was established in memory of Paul Hamilton, a 1968 graduate of Shelby High School. In addition to completing the standard application, answer the following questions in 1-2 pg essay form: 1) What does your family mean to you and why? 2) If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why? 3) What sets you apart from other students in your class and how do you plan to make a difference in the world? 4) Who do you most admire in the world and why? 5) What do you want to be remembered for? Amount: $1,000 HOGUE LYNN HOGUE SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship in memory of Shelby High School graduate Lynn Therese Hogue, will be given to a student pursuing a career in a field that emphasizes helping and serving others. Lynn was a social worker in a public school system and a counselor who maintained a private practice. She was an advocate for education and had a heart for those in need. The student applying for this scholarship is asked to submit an essay describing how they have or will reflect the empathy and concern Lynn had for others. Standard. Amount: $1,000 HORNER RHEA HORNER PRACTICAL NURSING SCHOLARSHIP The award winner of this scholarship must have been accepted for the fall term at an accredited nursing school and must be seeking training as a licensed practical nurse. Standard application. Amount: To be determined. Athletic or cheerleading participant during last two years of high school - Pursuing college or military - HS athlete - minimum 3.0 GPA Field that emphasizes helping and serving others Practical Nursing (LPN) Specific Essay, see scholarship - specific essays, see scholarship - 2 sealed letters of recommendation from 2 teachers (non-relative) Specific Essay, see scholarship s DUE January 5, 2018

LOWMILLER MARK & VIRGINIA LOWMILLER SCHOLARSHIP Mark and Virginia Lowmiller both graduated from Shelby High School during the 1930 s. Their two children, Mark and Susan graduated in the 1960's. Mr. Lowmiller worked in many jobs in Shelby, retiring as president of Citizens Bank of Shelby in 1980. He was also a founding trustee of the Shelby Foundation an organization that promotes the betterment of the Shelby community. Mr. and Mrs. Lowmiller celebrated their 65 th wedding anniversary before Mr. Lowmiller passed away in 2004; Mrs. Lowmiller passed away in 2007. It was Mark and Virginia's desire to help a Shelby student complete a college education through the awarding of this scholarship and their family wants to continue in that tradition. Amount: $1,000 MOODY W.H. MOODY AND LADYE F. MOODY SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship was established in memory of W. H. Moody and Ladye F. Moody. Selection will be based on good citizenship, school activities, school academics, maturity, future plans of the applicant and financial need. Standard application. Finalists will be interviewed. At least two in the amount of $2,000 MORSE JIM & JOYCE MORSE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship was established in memory of Jim & Joyce Morse by their surviving great nephew, Brent Fox. It will be awarded to 1-2 students each year in the amount of $500. REAM MASON REAM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Mason Ream was a sixth grader at Central Intermediate School when he died of a rare form of cancer. During Mason's battle with this disease, he fought bravely, never losing his sense of humor or desire to help others. However, he was not alone in his fight. His friends and family were also affected by the disease, and they helped Mason with his battle. This scholarship has been established by Mason's family to pay respect to Mason's bravery and compassion. The Ream family wants to honor those students who have contributed to their community, despite facing adversity. Applicants should complete the standard application. On the back they should write two brief essays. 1) How have you contributed to the betterment of your community? 2) How you have faced adversity and learned from it. ROSS DERRICK ROSS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship, in memory of Derrick Ross, a 2002 graduate of Shelby High School, will be awarded to a deserving student who is active in track or cross-country and FFA. Standard. Amount: $1,000. SHAW EMERSON & LOUISE SHAW SCHOLARSHIP Emerson and Louise Shaw established a scholarship for Shelby students as part of their estate. Academic performance in high school will be considered, and students of all intended majors are welcome to apply. Amount: varies year to year. SHELBY CITY SCHOOL BOARD SHELBY CITY SCHOOL BOARD SCHOLARSHIP The student must rank in the upper 15% of the graduating class and participation in extra-curricular activities will be taken into consideration. No immediate member of the family of a school board member will be considered. Standard application. Amount: 2 @ $1,500 SHELBY 4-H CLUB FUND Starting in 2016 the Shelby 4-H Club Fund of The Shelby Foundation will award 2 annual scholarship of $750 to deserving seniors at Shelby High School with a 2.0 or higher GPA. The student must have been a 4-H member in good standing and participated in the Richland County Fair. The student must enroll in a two-year or four-year program majoring in either agri-business, animal sciences, environmental sciences, pre-veterinary medicine, or similar careers. Please attach the following to the standard SHS Scholarship form: 4-H Resume -Please list (most recent year first) when you were a member in good standing of a 4-H Club. For each year, list: year, club name, adviser(s), your county fair project (s), club officer position(s) held, and any 4-H awards received. - In a minimum of 250 typewritten words, describe: (1) why your chosen major/career is a good fit for you; and (2) how you intend to be successful in this career. SHELBY LITTLE HOUSE SHELBY LITTLE HOUSE SCHOLARSHIP Applicant must have been involved with girl Scouting for at least two years, must live in the Shelby School district and have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or better. This scholarship will be a one-time award of $1,000 to further the applicant s education in a trade school, technical school, college or university. Answer the following questions: 1) How many years were you in Girl Scouts? When did you start and who were your leaders? 2) Explain some experiences you had through Girl Scouts. 3) How has the Girl Scout Promise and Law influenced you today? 4) If you received any awards through Girl Scouts, please list them and explain what they meant to you. 5) What do you intend to pursue in college? Standard 4-H member min 2.0 GPA pursuing 2 or 4 yr degree as described in paragraph - Involved with Girl Scouting for at least two years - minimum 2.5 GPA - 4-H resume - additional essay (see scholarship details) Instead of the standard essay, applicants should answer the questions found in the scholarship description. SHELBY LITTLE LEAGUE SHELBY LITTLE LEAGUE SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is open to any Shelby graduating senior (boy or girl) who was involved with the Shelby Little League Program (player or participant). This scholarship money is a one time award and must be used for tuition, books, or supplies and will be paid after the first successful completion of one semester in college or trade school as long as the student is enrolled in a second semester of college or trade school. An additional essay is required: In 500 words or less, explain when you played or participated in the Shelby Little League Program. How many seasons were you involved in the program? What was your fondest memory or experience? Amount: $500 STROUP TOM STROUP MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship was established in memory oof Tom Stroup by his family. Tom was a member of the Shelby community and his children were graduates of SHS. Applicants who are involved in at least one extracurricular activity will be considered. Amount: $1,000 -past participation in Shelby Little Program (boy or girl) - 2.5 GPA min. At least one extracurricular activity - additional essay, see scholarship description s DUE January 5, 2018

TOOKER WOODROW & EDNA TOOKER SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship was established in memory of Edna & Woodrow Tooker. Edna Tooker spent 23 of her forty year teaching career in Shelby. Academic performance in high school will be considered in awarding this scholarship, and students of all intended majors are invited to apply. Amount: varies year to year. YETZER JOHN & HELEN YETZER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP One female and one male will receive a $1,000 scholarship based on strong academics and consideration whether or not the individuals have exhibited a financial need. Recipients must be former students of St. Mary s Catholic School of Shelby. YMCA SHELBY YMCA RUNNING CLUB SCHOLARSHIP The Shelby YMCA Running Club has established a scholarship for runners. In addition to the standard application, applicants should answer the following 3 items on the back of the application or attach a new page explaining: 1) How many years have you participated in cross country or track? Please list years/events. 2) List any races/running events you have participated in outside of school activities, and 3) In essay form, please explain how has running affected your life and what does it mean to you?
