Grafton Base Hospital Information Package for Students 2017 Last Updated: May 17

GRAFTON One of Australia's most beautiful provincial cities, GRAFTON [population 18,500] is famous for its trees, graceful old buildings and mighty river. The Jacarandas flower each year in October, providing a spectacular setting and the theme for Australia's longest running floral festival. Grafton's Regional Art Gallery rates as one of the outstanding provincial galleries in Australia. The Gallery presents a variety of exhibitions featuring many notable artists and crafts people throughout each year. Climate WINTER - Grafton s climate is mild in winter with cool evenings and pleasant days. A jumper is needed in the evenings. SUMMER Grafton can be very hot and humid in summer with temperatures in the mid to high 30C s. THE HOSPITAL Grafton Base Hospital is a level ¾ Base Hospital within the Northern NSW local Health District. Grafton Base Hospital provides acute medical, surgical, orthopaedic, paediatric, anaesthetic, geriatric, obstetric and maternity, intensive and critical care, renal, oncology, palliative care, emergency, some specialist outpatient services and day surgery facilities to the people of the Clarence Valley. There is also a large range of Community Health services, including; Aboriginal health, Mental health, Rehabilitation and Extended Care [non hospital], Drug and Alcohol, Sexual health, Children s and Women s health. 2

UNIVERSITY CENTRE FOR RURAL HEALTH NORTH COAST (UCRH) The University Centre for Rural Health North Coast (UCRH) collaborates closely with Grafton and Maclean Hospitals. The UCRH has been coordinating student placements for the past ten years. The aim of the UCRH is to provide high quality health professional education and placements in a rural setting, based on strong partnerships and collaboration between the Universities, LHD s and clinicians. Our long term goal is that students will return and practice in our area. We require all students to complete the online Hand Hygiene Training, print the certificate and bring it with you to orientation. FIRST DAY INSTRUCTIONS What to Bring To Your Placement? University identification card Original criminal record check, immunisation documents and name change documents (if applicable). University uniform or professional attire (depending on discipline) A smile and a positive attitude. Hand Hygiene certificate All students must report to the Education Centre/Library on their first day for orientation. As a general rule the starting time for the first day will be 8am. Orientation will include: Introductions Welcome PowerPoint Distribution of orientation package Distribution of rosters Grafton Base Hospital student identification and swipe card Tour of relevant areas Infection Control and Occupational Health and Safety Information 4

TRANSPORT Getting around in Grafton Timetables for Grafton s Bus ways buses are available from http://www.busways.com.au/. The bus route that stops outside the hospital will take students down town. Grafton Taxi s can be contacted on 131008. How can I get to the beach without a car? A bus service runs from Grafton to Yamba on a regular basis every day. See the Busways web-site http://www.busways.com.au/ for further information. The hospital has a swimming pool that students can access. How can I get to Grafton? Regular flights come into Grafton airport. This route is serviced by Rex Airlines further information is available at http://www.regionalexpress.com.au/home.aspx Grafton is serviced by Country link trains from both Sydney and Brisbane. See the countrylink web-site http://www.countrylink.info/ Regular bus services also pass through Grafton. Contact your travel agent for the range of coach services available. What is parking like, if I were to drive? If staying in the student accommodation limited car parking is available on site behind the conference centre. There is no undercover or security parking. 5

ENTERTAINMENT What is there to do in Grafton at night? There are many different restaurants, clubs and pubs to visit while you re in Grafton. There is a heritage movie theatre Cinema The Saraton Theatre http://www.saraton.com/ located in Prince St. What is there to do in Grafton on the weekends? There are plenty of activities to do in Grafton including a wide range of sports including: Many Gyms Olympic swimming pool and water slide Coffee shops Shopping world Ten pin bowling Bike riding and walking Within a one hour drive of Grafton is: Yamba beaches, cafes and Pacific Hotel. Coffs Harbour beaches, shops, movies Minnie Water & Wooli fishing, swimming and boating White water rafting can be undertaken at Nymboida Maclean Scottish theme and coffee shops, galleries Ulmarra - Antiques Nymboida - White Water Rafting Byron Bay is a two hour drive north of Grafton and Brisbane now only four hours. Grafton has a number of National Parks within a short driving distance. 6

Library EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES A well-stocked library is accessible after hours with up to date resources donated by the University Medical schools and UCRH. Computer and internet Computer and Internet access is available 24 hours in the student computer room in the library. There is no wireless internet available from the accommodation centre. Video lecture and Tutorial Rooms Grafton Base Hospital has a variety of Lecture, tutorial and student rooms. Due to generous funding from a variety of Universities most of our education rooms are equipped with Video conference equipment, PC s and smart boards, for interactive and contemporary learning. Just let the staff know if you would like to utilise any of these rooms whilst on placement. Skills and Simulation Labs Grafton Base Hospital is also equipped with two clinical laboratories. The Simulation Suite is a new teaching space for Simulation Based Education. The provision of high fidelity manikins and other technology enables students and staff to access a simulated clinical environment for real life training and development. The Skills lab provides an environment for practicing clinical skills, such as suturing, plastering, catheterisation and more. The skills lab is equipped with many part task trainers and can be set up for class room style demonstrations. 7

Weekly fee for ALL students: $70 per week. Student Accommodation Centre The Grafton Base Hospital student accommodation Centre is located within the hospital grounds in the old nurse s quarters. Please email: greta.enns@ucrh.edu.au for all accommodation enquiries Once your booking is confirmed, you will receive a confirmation email. You may arrive anytime over the weekend before your placement. Linen and towels are provided. Refer to the map below for directions. On arrival, please collect your swipe key from the Emergency department. Walk across the driveway to the ground floor of accommodation centre Collect your linen from the first floor tea room trolley Make your way up the stairs to the second floor Your Swipe key will open both your room and stairwell door You will be issued with an invoice, please pay this at the cashier in radiology on your first day of placement. Vacate before 10am on your last day Lockers for your belongings are available, see staff if required. Return keys to drop box and place linen (towels and sheets!) in skips on the ground floor. Accommodation Features Single rooms with bed, desk and wardrobe. Air conditioned Shared kitchen Shared bathroom and toilets Communal lounge and dining Laundry facilities: You will need to supply your own detergent Linen supplied. 24hr access to Library, PC s and Hospital. Swimming pool Student Bicycles: Please see student admin for details. No Wifi in the accommodation centre. Computers are available in the 24 hour library. Important! Keep all common areas clean. Rooms are single occupancy only, no guests. Check out before 10am on your last day. Remove linen and rubbish from your rooms prior to checkout. If you miss the checkout time, or leave mess you will be charged a $50 cleaning fee and your University will be notified. 8

First Day instructions for students staying in accommodation Centre: Collect Key from ED Walk across zebra crossing to Accommodation Centre Enter fire door, first door on left after the little foyer stairs. Use your FOB to gain access to stairwell. Walk up one flight of stairs Find your room and access using FOB. You can then drop off your bags and collect linen from first floor foyer. 10
