Do not have to have the poster completed, just the abstract. Next meeting: October 7, 2014, 4 pm, Panera Bread, Stoney Point Legislative Committee - Bonnie Vencill: Many thanks to Linda Barnes our VA State Legislative Coordinator. She has submitted and Governor Terry McAuliffe has awarded Virginia perioperative nurses a Perioperative Nurse Week Certificate of Recognition. If you are attending the Oct.18th VCORN meeting in Norfolk, VA we hope to get a group picture made with the original certificate. Now is the time to go online to the OR Nurse Link website, under advocacy- and submit a PNW letter to the editor, and submit a PNW letter to your elected officials. All the templates are just a click away; you just need to submit your name, address and zip code. If your facility celebrates PNW please take pictures and send electronically to Danielle Glover (dglover@aorn.org). Update from VHHA concerning RN Circulator White Paper: The VHHA has not completed their survey. 23 Hospitals have responded, they sent out requests to 80 facilities in the state. Paul Spidell is hopeful, that all responses so far have been in the affirmative- they are using the RN as circulators. We have extended our time frame (until the end of September) with the understanding that if they do not approve the RN Circulator white paper, we will move forward with RN Circulator legislation. To this end, we are requesting all perioperative nurses to submit brief summation of near miss stories to AORN (dglover@aorn.org). These articles, with no specific identifiers (names, facility, etc.) just the meat of the story will give examples of why the RN Circulator is the safest and best patient advocate necessary in every operating room for every patient. These stories will be aggregated by AORN with strict anonymity. Virginia nurses have not submitted as many events as other states have. You do not have to be a member of AORN to submit a near miss story. Tell your coworkers to please help us get the word out. Our newest Legal and Government Affairs Associate Danielle Glover has agreed to come to Virginia from Denver to our VCORN meeting in Norfolk. Begin thinking of nurses you can contact that would be willing to attend the meeting, and if they can t come in person, ask them to join our RN Circulator marathon and participate with sending emails, making phone calls, or encouraging others to join us. We need to start bringing more people into the effort because we 3

will need to have a loud voice at the legislature if we want to have a chance at passing a RN Circulator bill. Newsletter-Jessica Guido: The newsletter was mailed out on Wednesday Sept. 3rd. Please send all information for the Winter Newsletter by November 15th to Jessica in order to send out the newsletter the last week in November. All committee chairs please send a synopsis of what is happening in your committee.
