SAT PERCENTILE DISTRIBUTIONS OF FIRST-TIME UNDERGRADUATES FALL 2011-2015 Bowie State University (BSU) Coppin State University (CSU) Frostburg State University (FSU) Salisbury University (SU) Towson University (TU) University of Baltimore (UB) University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Office of the Chief Operating Officer and Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance University System of Maryland Office March 2016 1

SAT Percentile Distributions of First-Time Undergraduates Fall 2011-2015 Background This report provides the 25 th and 75 th percentiles of the combined math and reading scores for firsttime, full-time, and part-time undergraduates at all USM institutions (except UMB and UMUC). The USM institutions report SAT scores of first-time undergraduates to MHEC annually. These data are also submitted to the U.S. Department of Education s national data system (IPEDS), and are used by external organizations (such as U.S. News) for various purposes, including calculations of institutional quality rankings. Also included in this report are summary findings on Maryland trends from the College Board as well as peer data for fall 2014 students. For further information, contact Chad Muntz, cmuntz@usmd.edu (301) 445-2737 or Rebecca Bell, rbell@usmd.edu (301) 445-2779. USM Scores In fall 2015, a total of 10,246 of the 12,225 freshmen who enrolled at a USM institution were reported in the official SAT scores. As noted, not all freshmen take the SAT. The proportion of the freshmen cohort with SAT scores is lower either because of alternative standardized test scores or admission policy exemptions. For the sixth year, four institutions (Salisbury, Towson, UMBC, and UMCP) reported that at least three-quarters of their freshmen class who reported SAT scores had combined SAT scores greater than 1,000. Based on this distribution, nearly 70% of the USM New Freshmen reporting combined SAT scores were above 1,000. See Table 1 for score distributions by campus Table 1 Trends in SAT 25 th and 75 th Percentile Scores Fall 2011 Fall 2015 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 25th 75th 25th 75th 25th 75th 25th 75th 25th 75th UMCP 1220 1380 1220 1390 1230 1390 1230 1400 1240 1400 UMBC 1120 1280 1130 1300 1130 1300 1120 1290 1120 1290 SU 1090 1200 1100 1205 1100 1210 1090 1210 1100 1210 TU 1010 1160 1010 1150 1010 1160 1010 1150 1010 1160 FSU 890 1060 890 1070 880 1060 880 1070 870 1050 UB 840 1040 840 1040 840 1030 830 1020 870 1020 BSU 820 940 830 960 780 930 820 930 800 930 CSU 810 920 820 920 810 930 810 950 810 950 UMES 790 940 790 940 800 940 780 920 760 910 Source: MHEC Form S-11 *Scores are two-part scores (math and verbal combined). **Includes scores from all first-time, full- and part-time students. Table 1 (above) displays the combined SAT scores at the 25th and 75th percentiles for fall 2011 through fall 2015. Fifty percent of incoming freshmen received SAT scores in the range between the 25 th and 75 th scores displayed in the table. 2

SAT Percentile Distributions of First-Time Undergraduates Fall 2011-2015 Maryland High School Graduates Trends (College Board) Last year 48,845 Maryland high school graduates completed the SAT. This represented nearly 80% of the high school graduates in Maryland. The mean Maryland scores were slightly below national means. o 493 mean compared to national mean of 511 o 491 mean compared to national mean of 495 Less than half (23,936) of the Maryland high school graduates who completed the SAT sent their test scores to USM institutions. However, the average score for those students who did submit them to a USM institution was slightly higher than the average score for Maryland and the nation. o 532 mean for USM applicants (14,697 scored 500 or above) o 526 mean for USM applicants (14,371 scored 500 or above) o USM applicants percentile distribution were 1,220 (75 th ); 1,060 (50 th ); and 900 (25 th ) o USM applicants mean high school GPA was 3.39 (21,007 finished 3.00 or above) o 16,342 USM applicants completed 4 or more math courses in high school National Trends from the National Center for Education Statistics (IPEDS) Nationally, USM institutions are competitive with peer institutions from the competitor states on the 25 th and 75 th percentiles of math and reading scores. Table 2 displays fall 2014 SAT data (the most recently available) for critical reading and mathematics scores. Highlighted are the USM institutions within alphabetical lists of their peer institutions. 3
