Regional Philanthropy Director Job Announcement Scion Executive Search (www.scionexecutivesearch.com) has been retained to conduct a search for a new Regional Philanthropy Director for Mercy Housing Northwest (MHNW), a nationally renowned nonprofit organization that provides impactful affordable housing and supportive programs. This onsite leadership opportunity is for immediate hire and is based full-time in Mercy Housing Northwest s Seattle, Washington office. About Mercy Housing Northwest: Mercy Housing Northwest is a prestigious nonprofit housing organization working to create stable, vibrant, and healthy communities for Washington State residents. The organization actively transforms lives by developing, financing, and operating affordable, program-enriched housing for families, seniors, and people with special needs who lack the economic resources to access quality, safe housing opportunities. Mercy Housing Northwest owns and operates 49 affordable rental housing developments in Washington, 6 in Idaho, and helps approximately 5,500 people per year make their home in their housing. The organization provides housing in 16 counties, with main growth and new development effort occurring along the I-5 corridor between Bellingham and Olympia. Mercy Housing Northwest is the northwest regional office for Mercy Housing. Position Overview: Mercy Housing Northwest seeks an energetic, creative, personable, and experienced development director that is passionate about expanding philanthropic support, building partnerships, engaging donors, and skilled at leading small teams. This hands-on strategic leadership position works actively to identify and leverage new opportunities for funding growth, while managing development operations and working as a direct contributor to meet and surpass the organization s annual fundraising goals. The Regional Philanthropy Director has the pleasure of directly supervising two passionate and talented Philanthropy professionals, the Associate Philanthropy Director (who leads extensive grant-writing), and the Events and Marketing Manager (who coordinates fundraising events to increase donor awareness).

Principle Job Responsibilities: Fundraising and Grants Oversee fundraising efforts to support MHNW s programs. Direct, develop, and implement a multi-year regional fundraising program of foundation grants, government contracts, corporate grants, stewardship, gifts, and events such as the Annual Power of Home Breakfast which has over 500 attendees and raises $175,000. Team with regional leadership to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward support from various sources which may include corporations, foundations, workplace giving campaigns, government funding, and faith-based funders. Identify new opportunities for development expansion via strategic research, proposal writing, overseeing the submission of grant proposals and reports, and direct fundraising activities. Effectively fundraise and lead/motivate a small team of development professionals to meet annual regional philanthropic goals of $1.2 M. Oversee donor programs and events; building long term, strategic relationships with key influencers which drive donations. Direct all grant writing including research, cultivation, follow-up, and reporting. Ensure reporting is completed in a timely and professional manner and is according to schedule. Ensure proper stewardship, management, and accountability of grant-funded projects through regular communication with program and finance staff. Drive appropriate acknowledgement, recognition, creation of thank-you letters, and stewardship of donors. Develop annual fundraising budgets, financial and revenue projections, financial reports, and explanations of financial information for grants. Cultivate and steward relationships with key potential donor prospects; leading pipeline development of prospective donors at major gift levels. Oversee the strategy and successful completion of direct mail annual appeals and online fundraising campaigns. Work collaboratively with Resident Services, Real Estate Development, and Finance Staff on the development of grant materials, collateral, and stewardship of funds. Operational and Staff Management Contribute as a senior leader and supportive mentor to MHNW development staff. Develop, implement, and monitor progress toward short and long-term fundraising strategy and goals. Hire, mentor, motivate, and supervise regional philanthropy staff such as the Associate Philanthropy Director and the Events and Marketing Manager.

Provide a vision for organizational development goals and drive team excitement to meet objectives. Ensure collaboration with Resident Services and Real Estate Development Staff to support strategies, establish meaningful goals and outcomes, evaluate programs, assist in persuasive messaging, and prepare reports to support continuous program improvement and to publicly share results with peer organizations and funding supports. Coach and encourage the professional and personal development of staff and positively recognize the accomplishments of staff in own work group and other areas of Mercy Housing. Honor the private and confidential matters of coworkers as well as protect the proprietary information of Mercy Housing. Reinforce the importance of the core values within the work group and the larger organization by acknowledging behaviors that demonstrate or reflect Respect, Justice, and/or Mercy. Follow rules, regulations, and policies while positively contributing to implementing changes. Identify and take advantage of opportunities for personal and professional development Communications and Marketing Support and provide leadership in the planning and implementation of various relevant site visits, public events, conferences, and meetings. Source stories and develop content for national and regional communications and publications including newsletters, annual reports, fact sheets, and other collateral material. Collaborate with national and local teams in the development and communication of emergency communications, media relations, and crisis communications. Create public relations materials for the region in conformity with Mercy Housing Communications Standards with support from the National Communications Team. Support and provide leadership in the planning and implementation of regional special events, press, and volunteer opportunities for institutional partners. Collaborate with other work groups, Mercy Housing Organizations, and outside organizations as appropriate, in a proactive and responsive manner. Qualifications: Five plus years of development experience in directing and or senior level positions overseeing grant writing, major donor efforts, contract administration, special events or a related field. An aptitude and passion for hands-on donor cultivation and major gifts stewardship. Prior experience leading and managing small teams. Bachelor s degree in Nonprofit Management, Marketing, Business, Social Work, English, Journalism or a related field is strongly preferred.

Strong passion for the mission and values of Mercy Housing. Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to relate to a variety of individuals, groups, and key stakeholders. Creativity, strong problem-solving skills, can take initiative, is diplomatic and discrete. Experience creating a collaborative and communicative team environment. Advanced proficiency in MS Office applications and prior donor database software experience (Raiser s Edge a plus). Accomplished organizational skills and pays close attention to detail. A participative style of decision making. Passion for promoting a culture of philanthropy within the organization and engaging staff and the Board of Directors. Ability to actively participate in joint problem solving and willingly cooperates with coworkers. Ability to travel as necessary. Ability to push/pull object less than 30 pounds, walk, climb stairs, and enter/exit. Ability to read fine print on documents along with the ability to speak clearly and to be understood while also understanding others using the English language. Ability to understand and relate to concepts behind specific ideas and remember multiple tasks/assignments given to others over a period of days. Able to concentrate on moderate detail in both office and field with moderate interruption. Able to attend task/function for more than 60 minutes at a time. CFRE certification-a plus. Ability to work with diverse groups of people. Ability to use sound judgment, be professional, and maintain a positive attitude.
