Salary and Demographic Survey Results

Executive Summary In May of 2011, GPA conducted a salary and demographic survey of grant professionals. The survey was distributed to all 1,683 active GPA members and posted to the GPA website; 230 responses were received. This greatly increased response rate is helpful in generalizing the results of the survey to the population of grant professionals as a whole, as well as guarding the results from statistical anomalies, making the results more accurate. This is the sixth annual survey of its kind. The 2011 survey was expanded to collect a great deal more information on the demographics of grant professionals as well as data on proposals funded versus proposals written. New data points and a strong response rate provide answers to the question, Who is a typical grant professional? Earns $61,927 per year as a full-time employee and receives benefits (98%) with a value of about $15,989 per year Feels very well (15%) or fairly (56%) compensated for the work s/he performs Writes about 14 grant proposals a year, of which 11 are funded Female (86%), between 51 and 60 years old (17%), and White/Non Hispanic (88%), Holds a Bachelor s Degree (33%) in Education (10%), Political Science (10%), Psychology (10%), English (9%), Journalism (9%), Business Administration (7%) or History (7%) Holds a Graduate or Professional Degree (56%) A Grant coordinator (proposal development and grants/project/fiscal management 29%) or a Grant Proposal Writer (writes proposal, includes research, budget preparation & evaluation 45%) Full-time employed in a job where all or most of his/her functions are related to grants (69%) Works in an Urban Area (63%) Has been in the grants field for 5-10 years (29%) and considers him or herself advanced with regard to skill level (59%) Works for a nonprofit agency (25%), government agency (local, state or federal - 17%), college/university/research institute (12%) or K-12 Education (public or private -10%) Works for a very well-established (83%) large sized agency (41%) that employs approximately 2,047 Fulltime Equivalents (FTEs) with an annual operating budget of more than $20 million (51%), at which approximately 5 individuals work within the grant department or profession. i

Concentrates on writing proposals to private foundations (35.2%), the Federal government (24.47%), local governments (5.99%) and state governments (18.05%) Additional key finding are: Most grant consultants (71%) felt adequately compensated for the work they performed, and many (75%) reported having a greater income as grant professional consultants than as employees. While there was a difference in salary by race ($92,500 Asian, $75,833 Black or African-American/Non-Hispanic, and $61,453 White/Non-Hispanic), it is noted that were only two Asian and six Black or African-American/Non-Hispanic survey respondents, compared to 160 White/Non-Hispanic respondents. There are strong positive correlations between salary and age, years of experience, skill level, size of organization, and degree of establishment of organization. There are no apparent correlations between salary and an individual s proposal success rate or the percentage of an organization s annual operating budget that is comprised of grants. There are no apparent correlations between success rate and skill level or success rate by size or organization. There are no strong correlations between proposal success rates and years in the grants field. There are no significant changes between the results from last year to this. ii

Raw Data The 2011 Salary and Demographic Survey was developed by GPA in response to frequent requests from GPA members regarding the salaries and demographics of grant professionals. This is the sixth installment of the GPA salary surveys, which have been conducted annually since 2006. The survey was available online through zoomerang.com. It was distributed to all active 1,683 GPA members via email in May. An invitation to complete the survey and a link on the GPA website (http://www.grantprofessionals.org/) welcomed anyone to take the survey, but noted that results would only be available to GPA members. The survey was closed on June 10, 2011. Two hundred and thirty (230) responses were received, which is about 62% of the number that responded to the 2010 survey. Cross-Tabulations: Salary Cross-tabulations were performed with Question 32 (i.e., IF you are working FULL-TIME as a grants professional as an EMPLOYEE, in what range does your ANNUAL salary fall?). Ranges were converted into a midpoint figure. For example, if a respondent selected the range $20,000 to $25,000, the midpoint of $22,500 was used to calculate average salaries. Limits of the survey administration software prevent cross-tabulations by the actual annual salaries reported in Question 31 or the hourly wages reported in Question 35. Cross-Tabulations: Proposal Success Rate Cross-tabulations were performed with Question 43 (i.e., What would you say your funding success rate was in 2010? In other words, what percent of the proposals that you wrote in 2009 resulted in grant funding?). Whole percentage number responses from Question 43 were collapsed into five-point ranges and the mid-point of the range was used to determine the average. For example, 6%-10% was collapsed and 8% was used to calculate the average, 11%-15% was collapsed and 13% was used as the average, and so on. The exception to this is the range of 0%- 5%, in which case 2.5% was used.
