The Program The Illinois Minority Real Estate Scholarship Program (IMRESP) was created by the State of Illinois and is funded through grants from the Real Estate Research and Education Fund. The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation has contracted with the Illinois Real Estate Educational Foundation (REEF) to administer this program. To be eligible for an award from the Illinois Minority Real Estate Scholarship Program (IMRESP), an individual must: be a member of a minority class. Minority is defined as a person of race or national origin that is African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American or Asian. Minority shall also include persons of any other race or nationality that the Illinois Human Rights Commission determines, either by administrative rule or statute, to be a protected minority in the context of affirmative action as outlined in Article II of the Illinois Human Rights Act; not have received the benefit of an IMRESP scholarship within the last 24 months; and be a permanent resident of Illinois. note: applications are ongoing - there is no application deadline An award may be used toward the payment of tuition, fees, and books, but may not be applied to such incidental expenses as travel and lodging. Scholarships may be awarded to those wishing to enter real estate careers or to real estate professionals who wish to improve their knowledge and skills. Currently employed professionals might improve their skills by completing credit generating courses or by pursuing such professional designations as GRI, ALC, CIPS, CRB, CPM, CRE, CRS, CCIM, GAA, LTG, RAA, or SIOR. This scholarship cannot be used for real estate agent or broker continuing education courses. The maximum possible award is $500. An individual who has received an IMRESP scholarship is eligible to apply for additional financial aid through IMRESP two years after receiving assistance through the program. The scholarship funds may be drawn only once and cannot exceed the maximum award of $500. Scholarship funds must be used within 24 months of the award date. Any unused funds will be returned to the Illinois Minority Real Estate Scholarship Program for use by other applicants. The IMRESP cannot be used for reimbursement of previously attended courses. No scholarship will be awarded retroactively. The Foundation The Illinois Real Estate Educational Foundation is a not-for-profit organization established to aid and promote real estate education throughout Illinois. The Foundation is supported through voluntary contributions from organizations and individuals who recognize the importance of furthering academic experience and training in the Illinois Real Estate industry. The Application Process The applicant should submit the completed application and all supporting materials to the below specified address. All scholarships are awarded by the Scholarship Subcommittee of the Illinois Real Estate Educational Foundation s Board of Directors. Scholarship awards are made on an ongoing basis; however, the length of the process may vary. Please submit all application materials at least twelve weeks prior to the beginning of the school term for which the financial assistance is requested. A complete application includes the Application Form, the Employment History Form, two Recommendation forms, proof of high school graduation or GED, and an essay. This application packet includes the Application Form, Employment History Form, and the two Applicant Recommendation Forms. The applicant must supply proof of high school graduation or GED and write an essay. The essay should be one page or less in length discussing the applicant s career goals and why he or she should be awarded financial assistance through IMRESP Scholarships are valid for 24 months. During this period awardees are required to register, take, and successfully complete their course of study. After successful completion awardees should send a copies of their award letter, proof of completion and all receipts to the below specified address for reimbursement. This scholarship cannot be used for reimbursement of previously attended courses. No Funds will be advanced to the student. Scholarship funds must be used within 24 months of the award date, may only be drawn once, and cannot exceed the maximum award of $500. Any remaining funds will be returned to the Illinois Minority Real Estate Scholarship Program, for use by other applicants. Application Form The completed form provides IMRESP with the pertinent information regarding the applicant s career plans, school background, educational goals, as well as on the school and course of study the applicant wishes to attend. Employment History Form The completed form provides IMRESP with information regarding the applicant s work history, including positions held and reasons for leaving jobs. The applicant may wish to provide supplementary materials if the form does not allow for a thorough presentation of the information regarding one or more former jobs. Applicant Recommendation Forms Recommendations provide the Illinois Minority Real Estate Scholarship Program with information on the applicant s character and abilities. The forms should be given to two individuals who know the applicant well, can be counted on to complete the forms, and will send them to the specified address in a timely manner. Like the Application Form, the Recommendation Forms must be returned at least twelve weeks prior to the beginning of the school term for which financial assistance is requested. The applicant may wish to provide those submitting recommendations with stamped, pre-addressed envelopes. Those submitting recommendations should be individuals who know the applicant through school, work, or community service activities. Each individual submitting a recommendation must certify that he or she is not the applicant s relative, not an employee of someone related to the applicant, and not affiliated with the school the applicant is planning to attend. Eligibility The Illinois Minority Real Estate Scholarship Program is open only to qualified racial minority residents of Illinois pursuing courses of study that will 1) prepare them for careers relating to real estate or 2) enhance the skills and knowledge that they currently use as real estate professionals. African America, Hispanic/Latino, Native American or Asian residents of Illinois are qualified candidates for Illinois Minority Real estate Scholarships.
