Page 1 Spring 2007 A Strong Start to a New Semester at Lambda Chi Alpha Dear This semester is an exciting time to be in a member of Lambda Chi Alpha at Wabash. Completing a large initiation during the first week of school, capped off a great fall semester during which the house and freshman GPA were among the best on campus. This semester we have a great representation in sports at Wabash. One freshman basketball player, two AK swimmers (one of whom, Brent Graham now holds a school record), three track runners, and four baseball players live in the house. Also, within the last few weeks, we have hosted a faculty dinner that a substantial number of the staff attended despite cold, snowy weather. Right now most of the brothers are preparing for midterm examinations, but as soon as we return the focus will be on recruiting a great associate class for next year. Honor Scholar weekend is March 16-18, and Wade Heiny is preparing innovative strategies to get the best high school seniors to our house. As Rho, I am trying to make closer relationships between the current undergraduate members, so we will have alumni events from time to time. However, feel free to stop by any time you are in Crawfordsville. I hope you enjoy the Spring 2007 edition of the Alpha Kappa Chats! Yours in ZAX, Ken Engle High Rho1373 Invitation Founder s Day Saturday March 24, 2007 The brother s of Lambda Chi Alpha would like to invite all alumni and their families to Alpha Kappa Zeta s Founder s Day festivities. Weather permitting, we will have a cookout and maybe yard games or other activities. Also a tennis meet will be on campus that day. Please RSVP at englek@wabash.edu.

Page 2 Spring 2007 A Note from the High Alpha Jason Cheese Siegel High Alpha My name is Jason Siegel and I am the current High Alpha of the Alpha Kappa Zeta. I am a junior biology major with a chemistry and math double minor. Some of my extra-curricular activities are the Inter- Fraternity Council and Alpha Phi Omega. The theme of my administration has been communication. I have worked with the Zeta to increase communication with alumni, faculty, administrators, and brothers within the house. I have been keeping in regular contact with new Home Association President Joe Folkening and believe that the cherished relationship we hold with our alumni is on the right track. I have been meeting with Dean Raters almost weekly to discuss how we can better create a model fraternity on campus. I have been trying to send out weekly Executive Committee minutes to the house to help keep the brothers well informed of important decisions. It has been a house effort to say the least. I am very excited about this year s Zeta. I see a lot of passion and desire in the officers, as well as the commitment to do their job correctly and efficiently. I will spare any more details and will leave them to the officers. I hope you enjoy this article of Chats. Clear your schedules for upcoming Founder s Day events and I hope to meet many of you within the next year as we share our ideas and strive to improve our chapter though the ideals in which we believe. Yours in ZAX Jason Siegel High Alpha AK1338 A Note from the High Beta Derrick Woods High Beta Wabash is renowned for its high level of student involvement and many of us decided to come to this fine institution, because we knew we would be given a chance to get involved on campus. Increasing the level of involvement on campus has become a top priority for Alpha Kappa Zeta. There has been a special focus on getting freshmen involved this semester. I am proud to say that this year s freshmen class is among the most involved on campus. Several of them are on sports teams, pledging the service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega, and are participating in various other clubs across campus. Our upperclassmen have also become more involved this semester by taking up leadership positions in extracurricular activities. Among them president and secretary of the Inter-fraternity Council, the president of the Spanish Club, the president of the Newman Club, the chairmen of the Student Life Committee of the Student Senate and the list goes on. At Alpha Kappa we are striving to get involved on campus as we believe extracurricular activities are not only fun but are necessary to get the true Wabash experience. Yours in ZAX Derek Woods High Beta AK1344

Page 3 Spring 2007 Report from the High Delta Wade Heiny High Delta My name is Wade Heiny and I am just starting my term as delta for the fraternity. I am currently getting everything into motion for Honor Scholar weekend, which is on March 16 th thru the 18 th. This along with being apart of the Wabash track team and also going through Ryhneship is keeping me very busy. I have already had several opportunities to meet with some freshmen, and I must say I have been meeting some really good guys that I think could contribute a lot to the house. Due to uncertainty as to how many people will be living in the house next year, our associate class will be somewhere from 12-17 freshmen. I expect to rush as good of an associate class as last year if not an even better one. Jason did a great job with that class and I am ready to take this exciting challenge head on. In ZAX Wade Heiny High Delta Sigma Notes David Mann High Sigma Brothers My name is David Mann. I am a sophomore and the newly elected High Sigma. I am chemistry major and also play strong safety on the football team. I begrudgingly report a 3 rd place finish in house GPA this past semester at 3.18, finishing behind FIJI and Beta (by 0.01 points). This will be one of my goals as an officer: to bring us back to the top where we belong. Our freshman gave a strong showing with a first semester average GPA of 3.25 finishing behind FIJI s freshman average of 3.50. I have been communicating with those of average GPA, and it is my goal that, next semester, we can surpass and defeat the other houses. In ZAX David Mann High Sigma AK 1370

Page 4 Spring 2007 Kappa s Notes Kyle Hayes High Kappa My name is Kyle Hayes. I am a sophomore and have been serving as High Kappa since elections this past fall. I am very excited about this position and am honored to serve our house in this manner. As a response to disputes between faculty and other fraternities on campus this fall, all fraternities were required to initiate their freshmen by the first week of the second semester. This proved to be a great obstacle for the education of our own associates, as this change was rather sudden. With amazing efforts by the associates and our big brother coordinators, Scott Hamilton and Michael Zielinski, both seniors, and junior Clint Happe, the associates were well prepared for their initiation. I am very proud to announce that we initiated twenty new brothers this January, raising the number of total initiates within Alpha Kappa Zeta to 1392. As our house was at capacity the entire first semester, and continues to be so, we currently have no associates. As a direct result, there are currently no education sessions being facilitated specifically for associates. This has allowed me to focus more on fraternal education, which is a unique aspect of this position that I am proud to fulfill. As other fraternities on campus deal only with pledge education, I take great pride in the fact that I have the opportunity and the responsibility to put on education sessions in which the entire fraternity takes part. This January, our High Iota and I welcomed a local doctor who educated the brothers on STDs. Also, this month Brent Graham, High Gamma, presented an education session regarding our fine system so that the brothers could have a better understanding of the system in place. I look forward to facilitating more fraternal education sessions this semester and the arrival of next year s freshmen. Hopefully we will have a good chance at winning Chapel Sing again! Page 5 Spring 2007 Phi Notes Jeremy Paul High Phi My name is Jeremy Paul, I m a junior from Evansville Indiana, and I m currently the Phi. I m an English major here at Wabash, and last semester I spent four months in the city of Amsterdam. There I studied gender as well as 19 th century European art. The experience revived me for my final two years at Wabash, but I d be lying if I said I didn t miss the Dutch livin. I won the election for Phi while I was overseas, and because the administration was putting pressure on the fraternities to initiate, the previous Phi and I were forced to initiate 20 freshmen in the first two weeks of the semester. We had to alter the ritual schedule a bit, but all of the brothers came together and we pulled off a very successful ritual, the biggest we ve done in years. We re not certain whether or not the school will allow us to return to our normal initiation schedule next semester, but with 20 new brothers I m sure we will be able to handle anything they send our way.
