Getting Started: Botox Certification for Nurses

Since the FDA approved Botox for cosmetic use in 2002, worldwide sales have skyrocketed and every year since has produced an increase in loyal customers. Further, the number is predicted to climb for many years to come. In fact, Botox manufacturer Allergan Inc. was recently purchased by Activis Plc for a whopping $66 billion, showing the unprecedented growth of this industry and where it s going. Why are so many people getting Botox? Simply put, because it works. It s also minimally invasive, almost painless and one of the easiest ways to erase a decade or more from a person s face. Lines are smoothed, wrinkles are softened and eyes can even be lifted. The History of Botox Botulinum Toxin Type A, a purified protein derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, has been researched extensively for the past century. When injected by an experienced medical professional, Botox is both safe and effective. It has become one of the fastest growing products in recent history for both medical and cosmetic uses. While Botox is now one of the best-known tools in the anti-aging revolution as a wrinkle relaxer, it didn t start out that way. Originally used to correct eye twitching and crossed eyes, physicians soon began noticing that it also reduced wrinkles around the eyes. Off-Label Uses Over the past two decades, its multiple therapeutic and cosmetic uses have been discovered and approved in approximately 80 countries with at least 21 different indications. In 2002, the FDA approved Botox for the temporary correction of moderate to severe glabellar lines (also known as the 11 s that occur between the

eyebrows) for people aged 18 to 65. Additionally, in 2004 Botox was FDA approved to treat axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive armpit sweating) in people at least 18 years and older. While numerous uses of Botox are continually being discovered and many are pending FDA approval, medical professionals are touting its off-label cosmetic capabilities including the temporary correction of: Crow s feet Horizontal forehead lines Wrinkles around the nose ( bunny lines ) Flaring nostrils Lip lines Sagging brow Droopy eyelids Jowl grooves Chin dimpling Bumpy nose Gummy smile Excessive palm sweating The Future of Botox The demand for minimally invasive cosmetic procedures is a phenomenon that few could have predicted accurately. An aging Baby Boomer generation, improved technology and our social media-driven world have all contributed to Botox s exceptional growth in the medical aesthetics industry. Since 2000, Botox injections have increased by 700 percent, keeping it at the top of the list of non-surgical procedures with more than 6.5 million injections in 2014 alone. Without a doubt, the future of Botox is very bright, and more and more qualified injectors will be needed to meet consumer demand.

Q&A s About Botox Certification Can Nurses Inject Botox Full or Part-time? The answer is, both! While many nurses choose to pursue medical aesthetics as a full-time career, others simply add Botox injections to their current skill set as a fun and rewarding opportunity to provide supplemental income. Is Botox Certification Right for Me? Botox certification is ideal for the busy nurse wishing to boost his or her cash-in-hand revenues. Did you know that in 2013, approximately 12 million non-surgical procedures were performed? Botox certification is a great way to join the booming medical esthetics industry that is projected to grow by at least 18 percent over the next two years. NATIONAL LASER INSTITUTE offers one-to-four-day courses in injections ranging from Botox to dermal fillers and sclerotherapy. All of our medical esthetics training courses are taught by leading medical professionals including dermatologists, plastic surgeons and nurses. Attendees also learn patient criteria, injection techniques, types of fillers and their uses and most importantly, receive hands-on training from experienced injectors. Why is Medical Esthetics a Good Fit for Nurses? As a nurse, you re already trained in excellent patient care. And helping people feel better is second nature to you. Medical esthetics adds another dimension to your skill set in that it allows you to help patients look as good as they feel. Besides, most nurses are already experienced giving injections of some kind. Cosmetic injections are just a different type. Many nurses also turn to medical esthetics because they re looking for a

less stressful working environment with more schedule flexibility. The revenue potential for a nurse with Botox certification and other medical esthetics skills is excellent, particularly because medical esthetics services are almost always 100 percent out-of-pocket. Who doesn t love the idea of working fewer hours and making more money? This attractive scenario appeals to many medical professionals who have spent endless hours building their practices, and to those just starting out who want to offer their patients a comprehensive menu of services in addition to healthcare. What Makes a Good Injector? The nurse s technical skill set easily lends itself to cosmetic injections and there are other criteria that are equally important, including: Good listening skills This is especially important because people have very different standards of beauty. While one patient might seek a softer, more natural look, another might want something that really stands out in a crowd. A passion for health and beauty Helping others feel good about themselves and build better self-esteem are two of the many reasons nurses are drawn to this industry. Why Choose NATIONAL LASER INSTITUTE? We ve earned our reputation as the leading medical esthetics and laser training school in the U.S. We teach cosmetic laser and medical aesthetics to attendees from around the world, as well as Botox and other injectables to medical professionals. But we also offer our students the tools they need to create their own medical esthetics practice. From client consent forms to marketing tips, operations materials to key vendor information we ve got you covered. You ll leave NATIONAL LASER INSTITUTE with the skills and confidence you need.
