ABOUT NGEE ANN POLYTECHNIC Set up in 1963 by the Ngee Ann Kongsi as Ngee Ann College with only 116 students, Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) has come a long way from its humble beginnings to establish itself as one of the leading institutions of higher learning in Singapore. Its vision is to prepare graduates with a passion for learning, values for life and competencies to thrive in a global workplace. Today, the polytechnic offers 49 full-time courses through the following academic schools: School of Business & Accountancy School of Design & Environment School of Engineering School of Film & Media Studies School of Health Sciences School of Humanities & Social Sciences School of InfoComm Technology School of Interdisciplinary Studies School of Life Sciences & Chemical Technology Apart from its hallmark broad-based education, NP is also known for its emphasis on global exposure. Every student is therefore given the opportunity to go overseas at least once, through a variety of learning platforms such as internships, immersion programmes, study visits, community service and competitions. Learning takes place amid a caring and conducive environment with top-notch facilities ranging from broadcast, multimedia and animation studios to research laboratories as well as simulation and technology centres. Leveraging its close links with industry players, start-ups, and research and community partners, NP enriches the students learning journey through internships, collaborative projects and off-campus learning opportunities at partners premises. Currently, there are over 14,600 full-time students in NP. With the latest batch of graduates, the polytechnic has an alumni community of more than 158,800. In addition, NP s CET Academy delivers about 10,000 training places and conducts over 200 courses every year, ranging from formal diploma programmes to customised short-term courses. It also runs Skills-based Modular Courses in various disciplines, to enable working adults to acquire new skills or deepen specific skills, without the need to pursue a full qualification. Dear Graduate, My heartiest congratulations to you on graduating from Ngee Ann Polytechnic. I hope that you have been enriched by the many rewarding experiences that NP has provided. Whether it was an insightful internship, an eye-opening overseas trip or the valuable guidance from lecturers and mentors, I hope these experiences have developed you for the better and will stay with you as fond, everlasting memories. We have done our best to nurture in you a passion for learning, big-heartedness and the skills to thrive in the global marketplace. These traits will stand you in good stead in a world that is becoming increasingly volatile and unpredictable, yet exciting. Unlike your parents, you will likely go through more rounds of jobs, and perhaps even several different career paths. We may see you back in Ngee Ann, perhaps for a SkillsFuture Earn and Learn Programme or some other course offered by our CET Academy, or you may seek other avenues of learning. Whatever the case, I urge you to embrace learning, and re-learning, to deepen your skills or acquire new ones. As you pursue your dreams and grow in success, remember to be grateful to those who have supported you. Cherish your relationships and do your part to ensure they thrive. Let me leave you with this powerful quote by an anonymous author. I hope it will guide you as you navigate the waters of your future. At the end of life, what really matters is not what we bought but what we built; not what we got but what we shared; not our competence but our character; and not our success, but our significance. Live a life that matters. Live a life of love. I wish you a fulfilling life and look forward to hearing your future stories. Clarence Ti Principal, Ngee Ann Polytechnic FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Ngee Ann Kongsi Gold Medal & Lien Ying Chow Gold Medal WINNER Gui Ming Yi School of Business & Accountancy OTHER AWARDS Mapletree Gold Medal & Prize Ngee Ann Kongsi Gold Medal & Lien Ying Chow Gold Medal Their hunger and enthusiasm for knowledge has rubbed off Ming Yi. He now takes the initiative to increase his knowledge and expand his skillsets. For instance, during an internship stint with DBS, Ming Yi discovered his interest in financial technology. True to his go-getter nature, Ming Yi started deepening his understanding about this fast-expanding industry and how it can support banking operations through books and online videos. But that s not all. Ming Yi has set a personal goal to pick up programming and coding skills in the next two years. Eager to pay it forward, Ming Yi enjoys sharing his insights and experiences with others. He is still serving as the Alumni Committee Chairperson of his secondary school and hopes to eventually become an educator in future. With his unyielding drive for self-improvement, it is clear that Ming Yi s path to success has only just begun. Never stop and never settle is a quote that Gui Ming Yi lives by the International Business (IBZ) graduate is always striving to do better, despite his stellar achievements. Even before stepping into Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP), Ming Yi had already been consistently topping his cohort in secondary school, where he was the head of the students council. He has also received multiple awards and book prizes for his outstanding academic performance in NP, while juggling his cocurricular commitments as a member of the Business & Accountancy Society and trip coordinator for the International Business Explorer Series. I wasn t a very vocal student in secondary school, so I really wanted to step out of my comfort zone in poly. That was why I pushed myself to join different CCAs and interact with more people, said Ming Yi. I m not the kind of person who will stay satisfied. I m always looking forward to my next goal. I want to try my best in everything that I do. The Ngee Ann Kongsi Gold Medal is awarded each year to the most outstanding graduate from Ngee Ann Polytechnic. The recipient is selected from the top graduates of the various Academic Schools. The medal, first presented in 1980, is funded by Ngee Ann Kongsi, a foundation that is actively involved in educational, cultural and welfare activities in Singapore. The Lien Ying Chow Gold Medal is awarded to the most outstanding graduate from a non-technology course in Ngee Ann Polytechnic. First awarded in 1998, it is funded through the generous contribution of the late Dr Lien Ying Chow, Chairman of the Lien Foundation. Dr Lien was the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the then Ngee Ann College from 1962 to 1965. Ming Yi describes an Overseas Merit Fellowship trip to New York as one of the highlights of his polytechnic years. I was surrounded by so many bright minds who inspired me to be curious and open-minded. They would discuss current affairs and topics beyond their diploma courses, which broadened my perspectives.

Lee Kuan Yew Award & Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Award WINNER Yeow Chen Kwei Annemarie School of Life Sciences & Chemical Technology OTHER AWARDS Luft Env Technologies Pte Ltd Gold Medal & Prize Stratificare Prize Lee Kuan Yew Award & Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Award younger, Annemarie also started volunteering at Club Rainbow and Ng Teng Fong General Hospital during her final year at NP. I enjoy connecting with people and I want to understand the worries of the patients, said Annemarie, who usually brings patients on walks and assists them during meal times. Annemarie recalls an incident in her volunteering journey where a patient ignored her despite her repeated attempts to talk to her. While she felt disheartened, Annemarie continued spending time with the patient, and eventually won her over with her sincerity. I was really touched when she finally reached out for my hand during a walk. To patients, hospitals can be a scary place to be in. I hope to provide some comfort to the patients there, no matter how small it may be, she said. Annemarie hopes to pursue medicine in one of the local universities. Gentle and soft spoken, Annemarie s demeanour belies her stronger side. The 19-year-old grew up watching disaster documentaries, intrigued by how medical teams saved lives quickly. I realised that medicine can make an impact on people s lives and give them hope in an otherwise bleak situation, said Annemarie, whose interest in biology was further fuelled after she joined a life sciences programme in secondary school. The programme gave me the opportunity to work on my first research project in secondary school, which focused on bacteria growth on different types of meat. This exposed me to research and increased my thirst for science, she added. The Biomedical Science graduate also did an internship at A*STAR, where she worked on a project on neurodegenerative disease that affects children. The Lee Kuan Yew Award was first presented in 1992. It is awarded to the most outstanding graduate from a technology course in Ngee Ann Polytechnic. The award is funded by the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore s first Prime Minister. Mr Lee had donated the honorarium that he had received from various overseas speaking engagements and from the funds raised from a special edition of his memoirs. The Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Award is a premier award for all-round excellence. It is presented to a select group of five to 10 top graduates from each graduating batch of about 5,000 students. The award was presented for the first time in 2010. This year, eight Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Awards will be given. While the aspiring doctor had to juggle her schoolwork and commitments of being a Student Ambassador in Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP), she devoted the rest of her time to serving the community. Lee Kuan Yew Award & Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Award WINNER Sng Li Wen, Aaron School of Engineering OTHER AWARDS Defence Science and Technology Agency Gold Medal & Prize BlasterZone Prize Fuji SMBE Prize Rohde and Schwarz Asia Prize Team One Technologies Prize If Aaron Sng has his way, robots will be common features in homes of the future. The 19-year-old wants to live in a world where humans command robots to perform mundane tasks. Who wouldn t want a robotic helper around the house to do domestic chores? I hope to create something useful that people can use, said Aaron, whose love affair with technology began after he used a computer for the first time at the age of seven. The boy genius then went on to teach himself coding skills, mostly by reading a C for Dummies book. Once he learned the language, it did not take long before he started writing his own simple computer games. Aaron continued to cultivate his fascination in science and research throughout his academic journey, participating in hackathons and robotics competitions both locally and internationally. In fact, Aaron even earned a spot to represent Singapore in the World Robotics Olympiad in Sochi, Russia, in 2014. It was definitely a great learning opportunity, as I was able to pit my skills against the best Lee Kuan Yew Award & Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Award teams from around the world. I also gained new insights on how to improve my robot for future competitions, he recounted. To Aaron, the best thing about programming is coming up with creative solutions to realworld problems and the potential to learn something new every day. Programming is very challenging because it requires a lot of patience. It s very satisfying when you finally get your robot to work, said the Engineering Science graduate who discovered how engineering can improve people s lives while working on a project during a summer school programme at the University of Sheffield in England. Working together with his team mates, Aaron developed a mobile application to help patients determine the probability of an asthma attack. For his final-year project, Aaron also developed a computer-aided system to detect colorectal lesions, which can improve the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer. It made me more certain of my goal to pursue a career in scientific research and improve people s lives, he said. Aaron has received several offers for his further studies, including the Renaissance Engineering Programme at Nanyang Technological University, and Computer Science at University College London. The Lee Kuan Yew Award was first presented in 1992. It is awarded to the most outstanding graduate from a technology course in Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Lee Kuan Yew Award & Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Award WINNER Mohamed Farouq Bin Mohamed School of Health Sciences OTHER AWARDS SingHealth Gold Medal & Prize National University Hospital Prize Tan Tock Seng Hospital Prize Lee Kuan Yew Award & Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Award He enjoys the teamwork and camaraderie in the hospital wards, and the fact that no two work days are the same. Unlike a desk job which can become rather routine, my day revolves around different tasks such as serving medication, wound dressing, preparing patients for their operations, and taking care of them after their procedures, he said. While nursing brings joy to Farouq he feels glad when he gains his patients trust and confidence, and when they finally get well he admits that it does come with its fair share of challenges. From the physical and mental stress of working in a fast paced environment to managing the occasional difficult patients, these challenges seem daunting. However, Farouq remains dedicated to his mission. Nursing is more than a job, it s a calling. I feel a great sense of satisfaction when I help other people, he shared. The avid netball player hopes to become an Advanced Practice Nurse. Mohamed Farouq found his life purpose in an unlikely place while lying on a hospital bed. It all started back in 2008, when Farouq was rushed to the hospital after he had fainted during a school trip to Pulau Ubin. I felt lonely and afraid as I didn t know what was going to happen. But a nurse assured me that she would be by my side. Her presence and gentle words really touched me, he recounted. Throughout his five-day stay at the hospital, Farouq remembered that the nurses in his ward went the extra mile to ensure he felt comfortable. Their kind gestures left a deep impression on Farouq, and inspired him to take up nursing. Fast forward nine years, and Farouq is graduating from Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) with a nursing diploma. Besides providing excellent nursing care and comfort to his patients, Farouq also hopes to make time for that personal touch. For example, during his clinical attachments at various hospitals, he always makes it a point to chat with his patients and listen to their worries. The Lee Kuan Yew Award was first presented in 1992. It is awarded to the most outstanding graduate from a technology course in Ngee Ann Polytechnic. The award is funded by the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore s first Prime Minister. This year, eight Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Awards will be given. Besides providing physical help, I also believe in offering emotional support to patients. More importantly, I hope to be a friend who will stay with them through their journeys of recovery, said Farouq.

Tay Eng Soon Gold Medal Tay Eng Soon Gold Medal WINNER Liaw Lay Kian School of Health Sciences OTHER AWARDS St Luke s Silver Medal & Prize While going back to school may be the last thing on the minds of many people in their 50s, Liaw Lay Kian s learning journey has only just begun. Not only does the 55-yearold plan to pursue a Specialist Diploma after graduating from polytechnic, she knows exactly which field she hopes to specialise in: palliative care nursing. Motivated by her love for people, Lay Kian only discovered her calling after she became a full-time caregiver to two of her loved ones. For about two decades, the former homemaker cared for her father-in-law, who was bedridden from a stroke he suffered in the 1990s. The mother-of-two was then dealt a second blow in 2008 when her husband was diagnosed with advanced stage colorectal cancer. She cared for him too, until he passed away in the same year, within 10 months of his diagnosis. I never imagined that I would become a student again, let alone be in a class with students younger than my daughters. It was definitely challenging but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, she added. Despite being the oldest in her cohort, Lay Kian found it easy to fit in with her younger classmates. They treated me like one of them and made me feel at home. I m grateful that they were always ready to help, especially when I was trying to figure out how to use the school s online portal, she shared. Besides juggling her school work and motherhood, Lay Kian also found time to volunteer at the Dover Park Hospice throughout her three years at NP. Lay Kian is currently working as an assistant nurse at Dover Park Hospice, and believes her life experiences have taught her the importance of providing holistic end-of-life care to others. On what motivates her to keep going, Lay Kian, who counts Florence Nightingale and Mother Teresa as her role models, said: I remain focused on my goal to be a competent nurse, and to bring comfort to those feeling down and out in their season of life. The Tay Eng Soon Gold Medal is awarded each year to the most outstanding Ngee Ann Polytechnic graduate who is formerly from an Institute of Technical Education. First awarded in 1994, the medal is funded by the Tay Eng Soon Scholarship Fund, set up in honour and memory of the late Senior Minister of State for Education, Dr Tay Eng Soon. Following her father-in-law s death in March 2012, Lay Kian decided to train to become a nurse, first at the Institute for Technical Education, then at Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP). Having been a caregiver before, I know how important it is to help patients live out their remaining days with dignity. No one wants to be a burden, and I hope to nurse them in a way that makes them feel loved and valued, said Lay Kian, who returned to school because she wanted to learn how to deliver better care to other patients.

Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Award Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Award WINNER Amanda Tan Jia Ying School of Humanities & Social Sciences OTHER AWARDS Adrenalin Gold Medal & Prize Pure Eddiction Prize Amanda Tan is no stranger to adversity. The Business & Social Enterprise graduate had her world turned upside down when her father s car dealership business went bust in 2003. A few years later, just as they were rebuilding their lives, he became partially paralysed after a brain aneurysm. I was very scared as I was so young then. I kept thinking, Why me? said Amanda. It was a very difficult period in my life. Fortunately, her father managed to pull through and recovered. She is also grateful that a medical social worker stepped in to ensure that her family was getting all the financial and emotional help they needed. Touched by the warmth and compassion extended to her family by the social worker, Amanda vowed to pay it forward in future. As an active member of the Food Aid and LEO clubs in Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP), Amanda reaches out to the disadvantaged through food distribution, visitation and home clean-up programmes regularly. She enjoys interacting with people and making a difference in their lives, adding that she has gained her most valuable lessons by listening to those she was trying to help. For example, she learnt about respecting the personal space of others when she had the opportunity to work on a foster care case during her internship at the Ministry of Social & Family Development. I remember being with this five-year-old girl who was very excited to meet her biological parents on an access visit, but was very sad when she had to return to her foster family after that. She didn t want to talk about it, so I gave her the space she needed, said Amanda. You can love without speaking. A lot of times, just being present for someone is what really matters. While the job of a social worker requires one to have mental and emotional strength, love and passion keeps Amanda going. It is a blessing to be able to help others. There were definitely times when I felt frustrated, but I ve learnt to bounce back. Knowing that I have been of positive influence or help gives me a great sense of satisfaction, she said. I told myself this was something I wanted to do. Despite the challenges, Amanda finds much to be thankful for. She believes the trials have redefined her priorities and inspired her to pursue social work. I used to think that success was all about getting a good job and a high-paying salary. But after all these trials, I have realised that it is more important to make an impact in the lives of others, she said.

Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Award Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Award WINNER Samuel Lam Wei Liang School of Engineering OTHER AWARDS Siemens Gold Medal & Prize DNV CTC Prize Schneider Electric Prize Samuel Lam has the television to thank for sparking his interest in the clean energy sector. And it all started after he had watched some documentaries on off-grid homes and renewable energy at the age of 12. The rest, as they say, is history. The programmes highlighted the effects of climate change in our world and how renewable energies can be an effective tool against environmental destruction. Clean energy is the future and I hope to play a part in protecting our planet, said Samuel. It is not surprising that Samuel decided to take up a Clean Energy Management diploma in Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP). Besides getting a better understanding on renewable energy technologies through his course, Samuel appreciates the hands-on learning opportunities that he has received at NP. learnt in the classroom to my job, such as putting lightning protection methods in place and designing the arrangement of the solar panels. The self-starter even took the initiative to organise a study trip to Tasmania, Australia, for his cohort. Together with some of his classmates, Samuel did intensive research on leading companies in the industry, arranged for site visits there, and put up a proposal for their eight-day trip. It was tiring, but very rewarding, said Samuel. As Singapore has limited renewable energy options, I thought we d benefit from the exposure. It was truly amazing to see hydroelectric power dams, wind turbines and solar panels in person! While that is plenty to keep a student busy, Samuel began coaching his juniors in programming concepts and math through a peer tutoring programme he had pioneered with his friend last year. I find great satisfaction in helping people and seeing them accomplish their goals, shared Samuel, who has personally tutored five of his juniors. Samuel has received the National University of Singapore Merit Undergraduate (Merit) Scholarship and will be pursuing a degree in electrical engineering after his National Service. For example, Samuel developed a white noise device that masks unwanted sounds, such as loud music, in collaboration with the Siloso Beach Resort in Sentosa. The device replaces annoying noises with soothing sounds. What s more, it can charge devices like mobile phones! Samuel also put his skills to good use during a six-month internship at Phoenix Solar, where he assisted in the installation of solar systems: I was able to apply what I have

He also led several environmental initiatives as the Vice-President of the Green Volunteers club, including a project to reduce food waste in NP. On his motivation to advocate environmental causes, the eco-warrior said: Every little bit counts when it comes to the environment. He added that his internship stint with PUB as well as site visits to the NEWater visitor centre and Ulu Pandan Water Reclamation Plant have made him even more aware of the environmental challenges facing Singapore. I hope to encourage more people to take care of our planet by practising more sustainable habits, said Jia Le, who has received offers from Nanyang Technological University and University of Bath to read civil engineering. He hopes to contribute solutions to sustainable development and green design issues in future. Move over, Captain Planet. Meet the environment s new superhero Ho Jia Le. Driven by a sense of responsibility towards the environment, Jia Le hopes to invoke change through his actions and inspire others to follow in his footsteps. It bothers me when I see people wasting water, especially when they leave the tap on while brushing their teeth. Many people don t realise that making small changes in their actions can make a big difference, he said. Jia Le s passion in water conservation started way back in primary school and was evident in some of his school projects. For instance, he designed a water distillation system that could purify muddy water using only Milo tins and cling wrap in primary school. He also made a 3D model of a solar furnace that could be installed in local housing estates to save energy while he was in secondary school. What started out as a childhood interest has developed into a stronger passion. Throughout his three years in Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP), the Environmental & Water Technology graduate has worked tirelessly to promote the green cause. For his finalyear project, Jia Le developed a solar-powered water drone to monitor water quality and prevent mass fish deaths. In addition to taking real-time water measurements,

Cyber security is an ever-evolving landscape, with new developments every day. It is an exciting and meaningful field, because what you do is valued by clients and makes a difference to their businesses, said Josephine, who likens IT security to a never-ending puzzle. There s just so much to learn, she added. WINNER Josephine Tanadi School of InfoComm Technology OTHER AWARDS Microsoft Gold Medal & Prize Motorola Prize Palo Alto Networks Prize Josephine s performance impressed her employer so much that she was offered a full-time position as a Forensics Investigator at KPMG. I was more motivated to take my skills to another level after my internship experience, said Josephine, who went on to become a SANS/GIAC certified Windows Security Administrator, a professional certification that enables her to secure and audit Windows systems. In fact, Josephine scored better than 90 per cent on the certification exam and was invited to be a member of the GIAC Advisory Board. She will get the rare opportunity to collaborate and exchange information with other top security professionals. It was a significant milestone for me because I proved to myself that I can do anything that I put my mind to, she gushed. Armed with this unshakeable confidence, Josephine is ready to take on the cyber threats that come her way. She will be pursuing a degree in Computer Science/ Information Security in the National University of Singapore. To gain more hands-on experience in solving digital crimes, Josephine participates regularly in competitions and hackathons. For example, she took part in the 2016 Singapore Govware Cyber Conquest which saw participants competing in scenariobased challenges that tested their proficiency in IT security. She clinched the third position after seven exhausting hours of computer hacking. Josephine s passion in information security was further strengthened during her six-month internship at KPMG s Forensic Technology department, where her responsibilities included helping clients prevent, detect and combat cyberattacks.

Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Award Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Award WINNER Joseph Soh School of Film & Media Studies OTHER AWARDS MediaCorp Gold Medal & Prize Batey Ads Prize The most distinctive quality about Joseph Soh is probably his laugh. Loud and infectious, it brightens up any room. I like to create a lively atmosphere and bring joy to the people I meet, said Joseph. He added that his love for talking and meeting new people has evolved into a passion for radio, a medium he first dabbled in when he was in Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP). There s just something enchanting about radio. You get to have a conversation with so many people at once and make an impact in their lives in a short period, whether it is giving listeners a prize or just brightening up their days, he mused. The 20-year-old described his time abroad as a life-changing experience. He was the editor of Geeks in Cambodia, a tech platform fully dedicated to startups and new technologies. As it was the company s primary corporate social responsibility project, Joseph was involved in building media partnerships and sponsorships with leading brands locally and internationally. He also wrote articles on mobile and digital trends. I used to be afraid of trying something new, but this overseas internship made me more open to other careers in the media industry. Even while chasing his dreams, Joseph never forgot the value in giving back to the society. Throughout his years in NP, he continued volunteering at church and organisations such as Touch Community Services, running character development classes in secondary schools and conducting youth mentorship programmes. He even put his skills to good use by emceeing and producing videos for a charity run. I am always looking for opportunities to contribute to the greater good, whether it is through volunteer work, putting a smile on people s faces through the radio or capturing people s stories through journalism. To hone his broadcasting skills, Joseph joined the campus radio station, Radio Heatwave, where he gained valuable hands-on experience in radio journalism and production. In 2015, he got a head start in pursuing his dream career after he won 987FM s DJ search, Radio Star, and signed a part-time contract with MediaCorp Radio. And while the witty Mass Communication graduate is still a lifelong radio fan, he is also keen on branching out into journalism or advertising. The course broadened my perspectives. I saw how there was more to communications than just radio, added Joseph, who did a six-month overseas internship at Endorphine Concept, a digital solutions firm in Cambodia.
