Exploring the challenges and possibilities of data a guide to nursing and health care informatics

why INFORMATICS? Health informatics drives changes in health care through the use of data. And these changes will lead to big outcomes. Informatics will help reduce: 6 Costs 6 Human error 6 Duplicated tests or procedures 6 Malpractice claims 6 Billing inefficiencies Informatics will help increase: 5 Patient safety and quality of care 5 Population health 5 Organizational and workflow efficiencies 5 Coordination between care providers 5 Patient involvement PAGE 2

THE IMPACT OF INFORMATICS With the implementation of new technologies, systems of health are facing changes and new challenges to solve. Capella University s informatics programs are designed to help you assist your organization as they face these challenges. MEANINGFUL USE The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) created a series of objectives that providers need to meet to prove meaningful use and receive incentive funding. Each objective requires proof that electronic health records (EHRs) are positively impacting patient care and population health. MEDICAL Terminology To achieve interoperability, organizations will need to focus on proper implementation and effective training of a standardized way to store and communicate this data. EHRs provide a place for the data to live, while the more specific classification systems of ICD-10 will offer a common language of data. Icd-10 Icd-10 The move to ICD-10 will increase the number of disease code classifications from 18,000 to more than 155,000 which will provide better patient care and experience, increased analytical capabilities, a more accurate payment structure, and increased efficiencies with decreased costs. INTEROPERABILITY Informatics offers opportunities for efficiencies and better patient care for individual organizations, but the ultimate goal is to make this data accessible in a coordinated, nationwide system of health. POPULATION HEALTH With all of the data we re collecting, informaticists can find trends and consistencies to more easily manage things like chronic illnesses and hopefully deliver successful outcomes for larger groups of people. CLINICAL WORKFLOW Going paperless changes the day-to-day life of health care professionals. Those who understand the workflow will need to collaborate with IT teams to produce systems and processes that enhance outcomes and create efficiencies. MOBILE HEALTH Mobile applications allow patients to get more hands-on with their health but it can also help providers deliver better care and services. PAGE 3

New technology. New information. New possibilities. Several pieces of legislation including the 2009 Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act and 2010 Affordable Care Act (ACA) have put the pressure on health information technology (HIT) by: Incentivizing and mandating EHRs Requiring providers to implement a more effective and efficient system Calling for providers to prove they re making improvements through new technologies quality care legislation data financial incentives As advancements have worked their way into health care, hospitals and other organizations are finding themselves with tremendous amounts of data. And along with the need to collect and safely store this data, health care is being presented with an even larger challenge: How can this data be used to improve the quality of patient care, improve population health, and reduce costs by increasing efficiencies? PAGE 4
