INTRODUCTION SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ENTRY INTO YEAR 7, 8, 9 AND SIXTH FORM Claires Court offers a range of Scholarship Awards to recognise boys and girls with outstanding achievement, talent and perhaps above all, potential. They are available to pupils entering Years 7, 8 and 9, and the Sixth Form. Whilst Scholarships grant some financial help, the awards recognise a scholar s contribution of excellence to the School bringing with it honour and prestige. Some awards give pupils access to individual specialist instruction and coaching throughout their time at Claires Court. Scholarship Awards are offered across a variety of fields, including:
FOR BOYS AND GIRLS YEARS 7, 8 & 9 TENURE Awards are: made on the condition that the holder will pursue his or her academic career at Claires Court through at least to conclusion at GCSE; offered subject to parents signing and agreeing to the terms stated in the Scholarship Award Conditions; valid whilst the holder plays a full and active part in the subject area for which the award has been made, to the conclusion of GCSE study, until the end of Year 11; reapplied for on entry into the Sixth Form; subject to the Principals continuing satisfaction with the holder s performance. QUALIFYING AGES FOR PUPILS Year 7 - born between 1 September 2006 and 31 August 2007 Year 8 - born between 1 September 2005 and 31 August 2006 Year 9 - born between 1 September 2004 and 31 August 2005 Awards range from 630 to 3000 per annum 4
FOR BOYS AND GIRLS YEARS 7, 8 & 9 ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS DATES FOR ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS FOR ENTRY IN SEPTEMBER 2018 Closing Date Examination Friday 12 January 2018 Saturday 27 January 2018 Announcement of results Monday 19 February 2018 Acceptance of offers Required within 28 days All candidates participate in both sessions on the examination date, to demonstrate what they know and can do: Session 1 Maths and a general intelligence test Session 2 English, Science and more general writing in one other subject studied in their current year (Geography, History, French, German, Latin, Spanish or RS). Successful applicants for academic awards usually have an IQ of 120 or higher and/ or a proven track record of academic excellence. Where evidence exists outside of Claires Court that confirms this status, this should be provided to the Registrar for consideration. For example, applicants are likely to be listed on their primary school Gifted & Talented or Scholarship Register. Number: Value: Duration of test: Up to 12 Scholarships may be awarded in any one year dependent upon the quality of entry. To a maximum of 1000 per term ( 3000 per annum). The Principals reserve the right to share an award between candidates should two or more candidates of equal merit qualify for one award. FOR BOYS AND GIRLS YEARS 7, 8 & 9 SUPPORTING SCHOLARSHIPS ART, CHORAL, DRAMA, MUSIC, SPORT AND ALL-ROUNDER DATES FOR SUPPORTING SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS FOR ENTRY IN SEPTEMBER 2017 Closing Date Examination/assessment See specific scholarship for details* Friday 12 January 2018 Friday 26 or Saturday 27 January 2018 Announcement of results Monday 19 February 2018 Acceptance of offers Required within 28 days Number: Value: Up to 15 Scholarships shared between the scholarship subject areas. Awards are to the value of 210 per term ( 630 per annum). The Principals will consider raising the value of supporting scholarships to the value of 3000 per annum where there is proven financial need, subject to means testing by the Schools appointed assessor. Successful applicants must have a strong track record of high achievement in the chosen subject area, and are likely to be on their current school s Gifted & Talented or Scholarship Register. ART Submission of Portfolio & Test* Friday 26 January 2018 Art Scholarships reward boys and girls of outstanding artistic ability and encourage them to contribute to the artistic life of the school. Assessment: Based on the quality of a portfolio of work plus an unaided test piece to be notified one week before the submission date and carried out at home. The portfolio and test piece should be brought to Claires Court by the submission date. Full details of portfolio requirements will be sent on application. 6
FOR BOYS AND GIRLS YEARS 7, 8 & 9 DRAMA AND MUSIC Examination/assessment* Saturday 27 January 2018 MUSIC/CHORAL Music/Choral Scholarships reward boys and girls of outstanding musical or choral ability and encourage them to contribute to the musical life of the school. Assessment: Duration of test: Value: Mainly based on the performance of prepared pieces and interview. Candidates may offer evidence of previous Graded Assessment (by one of the recognised Examination Boards). For musicians a second instrument may also be offered in support of an application. The assessment will last 15 minutes. In addition to any financial award, the Music Scholarship will include free tuition in one instrument and the Choral Scholarship free tuition in voice. DRAMA Drama Scholarships reward boys and girls of outstanding dramatic ability and encourage them to contribute to the dramatic life of the School. Assessment: Candidates will present one poem of their own choice (preferably learnt by heart) and a second poem chosen by the examiner, as well as participating in a group improvisation. For external candidates a strong reference from a candidate s present Head Teacher is essential. Other supporting testimonials are welcome. Duration of test: The individual assessment will last 15 minutes with group work totalling 1 hour. 7
FOR BOYS AND GIRLS YEARS 7, 8 & 9 SPORT Assessment* Friday 26 January 2018 Sport Scholarships reward boys and girls of outstanding sporting ability and encourage them to contribute to the sporting life of the School. Assessment: In addition to strong potential as demonstrated at interview and in a practical test, successful candidates will be judged on the contribution they are likely to make to sport whilst at school with us. For external candidates a strong reference from a candidate s present Head Teacher is essential, and supporting testimonials are welcome, for example from a senior coach at their sports club. These should be provided with the application form. Duration of test: The assessment will last 2 hours. ALL-ROUNDER All-rounder Scholarships reward boys and girls of all round ability who will contribute significantly in a number of areas of life at school. Assessment: All applicants for this award should participate in the academic assessment tests along with two other supporting areas, for consideration for a major award. In addition to strong potential as demonstrated at interview and in the practical tests, successful candidates will be judged on the contribution they are likely to make in a number of spheres of activity. For external candidates a strong reference from a candidate s present Head Teacher is essential, and other supporting testimonials are welcome. Duration of test: See individual components. 8
SIXTH FORM
SIXTH FORM THERE ARE THREE ROUTES TO SIXTH FORM SCHOLARSHIP: Route 1 ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS Academic Scholarships are offered based on existing outstanding performance and scholastic record, indicating that the applicant is likely to gain 8A grades at GCSE or higher. Offers will include reference to the target GCSE grades expected to be achieved. This major scholarship award is to the value of 3780 per annum. Awards will be based on interview performance, underpinned by an outstanding scholastic record including predicted GCSE grades. Up to six awards in this category may be made. Route 2 SUPPORTING SCHOLARSHIPS Supporting Scholarships are offered in specific skills/subject areas where the student has a known specialism. These areas are Art, Choral, Drama, Music and Sport and awards are to the value of 1260 per annum. Supporting scholarships are additional to the academic awards gained via Route 1. Candidates will be called to interview and are expected to speak well in the areas of excellence they have selected. SIXTH FORM DATES FOR SIXTH FORM SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS FOR ENTRY IN SEPTEMBER 2018 Closing date for entries Interview Offer announcement (conditional) Offer confirmation Friday 12 January 2018 From 22 January 2018 Monday 26 February 2018 Upon publication of GCSE results Late applications after GCSE results may be considered subject to scholarship availability. Route 3 POST GCSE RESULTS SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS Academic Scholarships are awarded on actual academic outcomes from GCSE, where a minimum of 5A grades has been gained. For each A grade, 225 per annum is awarded, for each A*, 450 per annum is awarded. No application is required. The minimum scholarship based on 5A grades would be 1125 per annum, with each additional A grade adding 225 per annum and each additional A* grade 450 per annum. Thus a pupil achieving 5A grades and 5A* grades would be awarded 3375 per annum. If an award has already been made based on interview and target grades in Route 1, and the amount earned is higher as a result of actual grades awarded, the higher amount will apply. scholars are recognised for their achievement and talent 11
HOW TO APPLY To apply for a Scholarship Award pupils must either already be in attendance at the School, or registered for entry into Years 7, 8, 9 or Year 12 at Claires Court in September 2018. Once you have completed the relevant Scholarship Application Form please return it to the Registrar with any supporting documentation to the address below. Please note the closing dates and assessment/ interview dates as detailed in this leaflet. We are unable to offer candidates alternative dates.
