Ben Seidman, Magician Monday, March 28 /// 8 p.m. Raney Dining Room Seidman is the only person in history to be named the Resident Magician at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. After several thousand performances at numerous luxury casinos, Seidman has become known as a powerful young staple of the Las Vegas entertainment scene. His residency at Mandalay follows a three-season contract as creative consultant for Mindfreak on A&E, during which he designed the illusions performed by Criss Angel. Seidman s performances are jam-packed with stand-up comedy, fascinating true stories, and worldrenowned sleight-of-hand. Faculty News Dr. Sarah Quick, assistant professor of anthropology and sociology, presented a paper within the American Indian Studies Seminar Series at The Newbery Library in Chicago, Illinois, on Wednesday, March 16. This paper chronicles Native fiddling and jigging through time, discussing its origins in the nineteenth century and taking its practice up to more recent periods. To learn more about the series, or Dr. Quick's paper, visit the following links: https://www.newberry.org/american-indian-studiesseminar-series https://www.newberry.org/03162016-towardsgenealogy-native-fiddle-dances-prairies Condolences It is with sympathy that we notify the campus community of the passing of Keith Spencer s mother and Theresa Spencer s mother-in-law, Jane Spencer, on Monday morning, February 29. A memorial service was held on Wednesday, March 2. Arrangements were under the direction of Lloyd James Funeral Home in Tyler, Texas. Please join us in offering Keith, Theresa, and their family our condolences. Staff News The Office of Institutional Advancement is pleased to welcome Angie Newton to their ranks, in the role of Data Entry Clerk. Angie, as many of you know, has served our Cottey community well in the Financial Aid Office for 13 years and was ready for a new challenge. She brings great deal of ability, experience, and professionalism to the position. We are looking forward to her joining our department on Monday, March 28. The Athletic Department is also pleased to announce that Mr. Mark Hedges has accepted the position of assistant softball coach at Cottey. Mr. Hedges brings over ten years of experience coaching softball both as an assistant and head coach. He has been involved in all aspects of coaching from the recruitment of players, to conducting practices, developing drills, and teaching softball skills and fundamentals to his players. Mr. Hedges graduated from Missouri State University with a B.S. in Business, and is the owner of ChairMart Showcase in Nevada. Coach Hedges is an avid supporter of athletics at Cottey, but his true passion lies in the game of softball. He will join interim head softball coach Stephanie Beason to round out our coaching staff for the Cottey Comets. We are delighted to have Coach Hedges join the Cottey athletic program.

Student Happenings Spiritual Life & Diversity: Visiting a Jewish Temple The Office of Spiritual LIfe and Campus Diversity lead a trip to a Jewish Temple on Saturday, February 20. This educational, spiritual, and diversity trip helped students learn about other cultural and religious beliefs as well as having an opportunity to engage in mutual dialogues with people different from them. Among the group were students taking the World Religions classes. The students who managed to go attended Shabbat, the Jewish Sabbath (Day of Rest). Students also had the opportunity to touch the Jewish Torah Scroll, the holiest book within Judaism. Students were able to observe many rituals performed during the service and how the community participated and expressed some of their values and beliefs. Student Community Service & Volunteerism Cottey College had five students and two staff members volunteer the morning of Saturday, February 27, at the Nevada Animal Shelter. They assisted with cleaning the facility as well as exercising and socializing with the dogs and cats. Cottey College participated in their Cross Generational Sharing Project the afternoon of Saturday, February 27, at Joe Clark Residential Care Home and Moore-Few Care Center. Eleven students and two staff members facilitated Bingo games with prizes for the different residents. The residents look forward to playing bingo and the socialization time with the Cottey students and staff. The prizes this time were donated by different Cottey departments and the residents loved the new prizes. Thank you to the Cottey departments that brightened the residents spirits by these donations. Class Field Trip: Jefferson City On Thursday, February 25, members of the Historical Methods class went to Jefferson City, Missouri, to learn about Missouri history and government. Laura Fritschle, Ellen Long, Brianna Jones, and Sallie Proudfoot toured the governor s mansion, visited exhibits in the Cole County Historical Society Museum, talked with the District 126 representative, and enjoyed a Missouri history lecture in the House Lounge of the capitol building while taking in Thomas Hart Benton s mural. The students proposed the trip and made arrangements. Angela Firkus accompanied them. Did you know you can listen to all of the soundtrack of Hamilton on a car ride from Nevada to Jefferson City? Oh no! History nerds on the loose!
