XII IOSTE SYMPOSIUM Science and Technology Education in the Service of Humankind (<http://ppip.usm.my/ioste12> 30 July 4 August 2006 Penang Grand Plaza Parkroyal Beach Resort, Malaysia. The XII IOSTE Symposium will be held in Penang, Malaysia on 30 July 4 August 2006. It will be hosted by the School of Educational Studies, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) on a non-commercial, international educational initiative with the support of local, regional, and organisations and dedicated to the improvement of STE. This is the first time IOSTE Symposium will be held in the Asian region, and Malaysia is honoured to host this international gathering. The XII IOSTE Symposium will gather researchers, policy makers, teachers and others who are concerned about how Science and Technology Education (STE) can contribute to individual development as well as to sustainable global development and international understanding. It will provide participants with a unique opportunity to look back and evaluate where STE education has been going, review challenging issues, and to look forward and plan for the future. The Symposium will be a 5 full-day session event with participants checking in on (or before) Sunday, 30 July 2006, and checking out on (or after) Friday, 4 August 2006. Symposium Theme: Science and Technology Education in the Service of Humankind. Subthemes include: Promoting peaceful and ethical use of Science and Technology through STE STE for Development, Empowerment and International Understanding STE from different cultural and humanistic perspectives: promoting international collaboration and understanding through cultural diversity Making relevance of effective teaching-learning in STE Plenary session speakers will be invited to write a concept paper (one for each of the Symposium sub-themes) by identifying challenging issues, trends and recommendations on what need to be done vis-à-vis the sub-themes from a worldwide as well as regional or national perspectives. The concept papers will then be posted on the website and circulated to the intending participants, inviting for comments, critiques, and suggestions. With the feedback, the speaker will prepare the final paper for presentation at the Symposium plenary session. The presentation will be followed by discussion sessions to synthesise the contents so as to produce an action-oriented IOSTE framework document charting the way forward on STE. CALL FOR PAPER PROPOSALS Intending participants are invited to present individual research-based paper (as individual paper either in parallel sessions or in mini-symposium). Presenting authors
should select one of the Symposium subthemes or the conventional STE topics listed below that best relate to the subject of their research study. Empirically-based proposal papers should include brief research questions, methodology, findings and conclusions/implications. Theoretical proposal papers should cover definition of problem, outline of argument and conclusion. Both the ABSTRACT and the PAPER PROPOSAL should be submitted as a single file in Microsoft Word format using Times New Roman 12-point font size, single-spacing. To facilitate file management, please use the following system to name your file: YourSurname_Country.doc (e.g., Spielberg_uk.doc; kklim_cn.doc; amir_iran.doc; etc.) In the event that a full paper is submitted, the author must make a declaration that the paper has not been presented at other conferences. Papers should be generally NOT longer than 10 pages (A4 paper size, using Times New Roman 12-point font size, singlespacing, Microsoft Word format). Include also an abstract than of not more than 100 words long. Please do not use other fonts or formatting. ALL non-text items in the paper (diagrams, graphs, etc) MUST also be inserted in the text (or sent in separate files with a clear indication of what software is being used in special circumstances). A hard copy of the papers should be sent by post in addition to submitting the electronic digital format via the Internet. All paper proposals should be submitted in electronic digital format to the symposium secretariat to the following e-mail addresses and accompanied personal data of the author(s) covering full name(s), institution(s), titles/professions, addresses (both postal and e-mail). (For mini-symposia, the personal data of the organiser of symposia and the authors of individual contributions should be attached). Please note that one of the
presenting authors of any individual paper should register for the Symposium before a pre-specified dateline, otherwise, the contribution will be withdrawn.
