Sometime in ife you wi have been a of these Dandy Lion INDEX Features Chairman's Message Editor's Desk IEEE News & Events Technoogy in brief Library Scan CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE Dear feow members, Seasons Greetings and best wishes for a very happy, prosperous and creative new year 2004. Hope IEEE activities & membership reach greater heights in 2004. Gad to inform you a that ACE 2003 went off very we in Pune from December 12 to 14. The tutorias and technica conference were very much appreciated by a. The counci expresses its sincere thanks and appreciation to Bombay section and Pune sub section for putting up a wonderfu show at a very short notice. Had it not been for the hard and sincere work put in by the Pune sub section vounteers, ACE 2003 woud not have been possibe. A miion thanks to a those who made it a big success. We are proud to inform you that this was the maiden effort of Pune sub section, the youngest entity in the whoe of IEEE. PadmaSri Dr Vijay Bhatkar was the chief guest and Mr S Ramadorai, CEO of TCS deivered the keynote address. The Counci is gratefu that Section Executive committee members of Gujarat, Bangaore, Keraa, UP, Cacutta and Bombay aong with MP and Pune subsections participated in this ACE. A hard copy of the Souvenir of ACE 2003 was formay reeased by the chief guest. The souvenir carried the abstracts of the papers presented at ACE 2003. The fu papers were made avaiabe to a deegates on a CD. Thanks to TCS for the GOLD sponsorship and Tata Teecom for the co sponsorship of ACE 2003. The annua conference of IEEE in India wi now onwards be INDICON rather than ACE. INDICON 2004 wi be hosted by Kharagpur Section at IIT Kharagpur in Dec 2004. The Ca for Papers is aready out. IEEE Standard 802.11g that combines the bandwidth of 802.11a and the reach of 802.11b won the Popuar Science magazine Mega award for 2003. This indeed is a commendabe achievement of IEEE and ampy demonstrates its roe in creation of standards for the benefit of Society at arge. It s the time of the year for renewa of our IEEE memberships. One can do it on ine with the hep of Internationa credit cards. Request a to renew by end of Jan 2004 since the cut off date is mid Feb. The 224 pus student branches spread a over India needs attention and proper administration. Basic issue is we do not know whom to contact in a Student branch. Mr HK, a veteran vounteer of IEEE is working hard to create an initia data base of student branches in India. With this we wi go on ine with access contro. Student counseors shoud be abe to update student branch information on ine with appropriate passwords just ike member data. This might hep streamine student branches. Looking forward to your active participation in IEEE activities, With best wishes and regards, http://www.ewh.ieee.org/r10/india_counci/newsetters/2004/jan04.htm R. MURALIDHARAN 1/5

2/19/2017 IEEE India Buetin Vo R. MURALIDHARAN Chairman IEEE India Counci r.muraidharan@ieee.org This issue is sponsored by IEEE KERALA SECTION EDITOR'S DESK Technoust or Luddite Switch roes according to situation Scene: IEEE Sections Congress at Anaheim, Caifornia. The Master of Ceremonies, a veteran IEEE vounteer, kicked off the activities with an inspiring wecome speech, highighting the IEEE initiatives in fostering knowedge exchange, comraderie etc among the members spread around the word. Finay, he concuded by making a down to earth request to the 500 pus members assembed there: he ifted a sma whiste hung from his neck and bew it oudy. There was pin drop sience, at once. He requested every one to honour his whiste for the next 3 days of the Congress. He wi bow it once tea break or unch time is over, signaing a to re assembe for the next session. And it worked exceenty we in controing one of word s most techno eite crowd, the IEEE members. Normay, being an IEEE function, a high tech gadgetry for such crowd management woud be the expectation. In this technoogy driven era, we are required to embrace the new technoogies springing up everyday, as otherwise we wi be rated as obsoete. But that doesn t mean that we shoud remain a Technoust (obsessed with technoogy) aways, when simpe soutions wi do. Many a time, a not so hightech way of doing a job may be cost effective, simpe to hande and even environment friendy. The whiste soution is one such case of simpicity and there wi aways be many avenues to practice this in daiy ife. However, being a Luddite (one who is opposed to technoogica change), can not obviousy be the chosen way of working for the technica personne. A judicious bend of both the options according to circumstances woud be the right approach. Student and Higher Grade Membership is 47.925% (59% in Jan) and 52.075% (41% in Jan) respectivey which can be considered as a good distribution. However, this ratio is widey different among the sections. Madras Section has the owest percentage for Member Grade and Higher Grade Membership foowed by Keraa cosey behind. Bombay Section has the highest number of Student (3612, 5554 in Jan) and Higher Grade Members (2803, 2258 in Jan) foowed by Madras (2474, 1419) (3969,1600 in Jan). Bombay Section constitutes 32% (31% in Jan) of India Counci strength foowed by Madras at 19.4% (21.3% in Jan). Together the two sections constitute 50% (52.3% in Jan) of the IC strength. Dehi has highest number of SM (137, 140 in Jan) foowed by Bangaore (116, 97 in Jan), both crossing hundred mark. SM grade percentage shoud be between 5 10% (IC 3.17%) of tota membership. Kharagpur Section has highest at 21.7%. Among other sections, Dehi eads with 7.8%. Feow Grade percentage shoud be 1% (IC 0.13%) of tota membership. No section is anywhere cose to this figure. Targets and suggestions IC shoud aim to cross 1000 mark in 2004 for SM membership. Feow grade target of 60 (currenty 30) shoud be achieved in next 5 years. IC shoud identify potentia members for Feow nomination very seriousy with hep of current Feows and Senior Members. To improve the student activities, training programs, technica and educationa http://www.ewh.ieee.org/r10/india_counci/newsetters/2004/jan04.htm activities and services, the sections shoud make a conscious effort and a working 2/5

2/19/2017 IEEE India Buetin Vo activities and services, the sections shoud make a conscious effort and a working pan for the year. This wi hep in graduation of student members to higher grade members. In particuar, the sections having very arge student membership and number of student branches, I recommend formation of a team in the executive committee under student activity chair (one per 1000 student members or one per 20 student branches) and divide the activities. I recommend initiating a new program under each section to target 12th standard/ii PU students and expose (expose them to new research toos and technoogies at the cutting edge) them to research cuture with the hep of our distinguished Feows and Senior Members. Caing IEEE members in India to register with the IEEE Job Site In 2004, the IEEE Job site is to make a specia marketing effort to attract companies with eectrica engineering and IT jobs to fi in India. The IEEE Job Site invites IEEE members to visit the IEEE Job Site (http://www.ieee.org/jobs) for the atest engineering jobs, and IEEE Spectrum Onine Careers http://www.spectrum.ieee.org/careers/careers.jsp) for informative career reated editorias, and many other specia features. There is no cost for IEEE members to register with the Job Site. Many mutinationa companies are ikey to use the IEEE Job Site for recruitment in India. This site is today considered to be the Internet s premier career site for executives, managers and professionas. In ate summer of 2003, the site has acquired a new ook and fee and it now provides a variety of service enhancements for members. Greater ease of navigation Simpified process to upoad job resumes & profies Mutipe job search agents to fit different skis and career goas Geographic radius search that ocates a jobs within a fixed distance from your home in increments from 10 to 50 mies Easiy remove yoursef from the Job Site data base as necessary IEEE Web Account singe sign on enabes member to og in once from any IEEE permissioned Web site using SiteMinder technoogy (Computer Society appications, WEBI, Spectrum Onine, etc.) and access the Job Site without an additiona og in. Don t deay and register with the Job Site today! For IEEE Student Members, the IEEE India Counci s Computer Society Chapter is trying to design another site (http://www.ieeevidyarthi.org) with the hep of Student Members. We need vounteers from IEEE Student Members and IEEE Officers responsibe for Student Activities in the Indian Sections for competing the job. 2/19/2017 IEEE India Buetin Vo Engineers working in the technoogica centre of Dephi, one of word s argest vehice component makers of Brazi, have now made it possibe for Braziian motorists to choose the cheapest fue in an ever changing fue market be it petro or ethano or any mixture of the two. Many peope dream of repacing petro with ethano. Because ethano is made from pants, and pants draw their carbon from the atmosphere, burning it woud eiminate a source of greenhouse gases and hep them to stem goba warming. But the optimum conditions for burning petro and ethano are different, so a we tuned engine needs to know what fue it is being fed in order to adjust itsef appropriatey. Petro burns best with an air to fue ratio of around 14:1.This means that, for every kiogram of fue burnt, a of the oxygen in 14 kiograms of air wi be consumed. Ethano, though, requires an air to fue ratio of 9:1. Dephi s technoogy works by sniffing the amount of oxygen in a car s exhaust. If too much or too itte of the gas is sensed, it indicates that the fue is burning in a ess than optima way, and thus that the air to fue ratio is wrong. A signa is then sent to the engine to tweak the ratio appropriatey. This system aso makes adjustments to compensate for the outside temperature. Optima burning requuires more fue in the mixture when the temperature is ower. Sniffing the exhaust means that this happens automaticay. Two other adjustments are aso necessary. Ethano needs more compression in an engine than petro does. The scientists at Dephi compromised by using a eve of compression between the ideas for ethano and petro. And ethano is more corrosive than petro. So the engineers had to ater the design of the fue pump, gaskets and piston rings. Thee resut is a1.8 itre engine that is now being fitted to Braziian made Genera Motors cars. Brazi has a history of promoting ethano as a fue. In the 1980s, the government encouraged it, in a misguided attempt to subsidise sugar farmers (since the main source of ethano is fermented sugar) and cut oi imports. At the height of this poicy, amost 80% of cars produced in Brazi ran on pure ethano. That proved very costy to sustain, and the subsidies were eventuay reduced. But the government is sti keen on ethano, and the motor fue in Brazi sti contains it in varying amounts. http://www.ewh.ieee.org/r10/india_counci/newsetters/2004/jan04.htm 5/5
