Mission & Areas Served Statements Mission Statement It is the mission of Shriners Hospitals for Children to: Provide the highest quality care to children with neuromusculoskeletal conditions, burn injuries and certain other special health care needs within a compassionate, family centered and collaborative care environment. Provide for the education of physicians and other health care professionals. Conduct research to discover new knowledge that improves the quality of care and quality of life of children and families. This mission is carried out without regard to race, creed, sex or sect, disability, national origin or ability of a patient or family to pay. Background Statement Established in 1923 in San Francisco to serve children with polio, Shriners Hospitals for Children - Northern California opened in 1997 as the successor hospital to provide the western region of North America with access to care for acute burns, spinal cord injuries, and complex orthopaedic conditions. The decision to build a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary referral center was made by the Joint Boards of the Shriners Hospitals for Children system in close consultation with the predecessor San Francisco hospital. Prior to the opening of the Sacramento hospital, children received care for burns or spinal cord injuries in adult or senior centers, or traveled to Shriners Hospitals for Children - Galveston, Texas or Cincinnati, Ohio for burn care; or Chicago Illimois, or Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for spinal cord injury care. Shriners Hospitals for Children - Northern California servse all of California for burns and spinal cord injuries. Signature Clinical Programs: Burns, Specialized Plastic Surgery, Spinal Cord Injuries, Cleft Lip & Palate, Pediatric Orthopaedics (Lower Limbs, Upper Limbs, Upper & Lower Limb Deficiencies, Complex Spine Program, Sports-Related Injuries, Neuromuscular Programs). Needs Statement Shriners Hospitals for Children - Northern California is committed to transforming children's lives by providing exceptional healthcare through innovative research, in a patient and family centered environment. In order to fulfull its mission and vision, the organization now looks to the community to assist in patient support and services. All services at Shriners Hospitals for Children are provided to families regardless of their ability to pay. Contributions to the hospital will provide much needed support to all programs, especially Spinal Cord Injuries, Acute Burns, Specialized Pediatric Surgery, Orthopaedic Conditions, and Cerebral Palsy. CEO/Executive Director Statement Shriners Hospitals for Children - Northern California is a truly unique and special place that offers hope at its very core. All children under the age of 18 are welcome to receiving the finest care possible to address their individual needs. The success of the hospital is due in part to the incredible staff that comprise are makeup: doctors, nurses, administration, environmental services team, nutrition services, engineers, and more. Their commitment to creating a safe place speaks volumes and we would not be able to provide such exceptional care with them. As the only hospital in the 22 Shriners Hospital Network to offer all four specialities (Acute Burns, Spinal Cord Injuries, Cleft Lip & Palate, and other Orthopaedic Conditions), we take our mission very seriously. In addition to these services, the Hospital proudly embraces research and devotes much attention and energy to staying ahead of the curve, and remains committed to finding the very best way to treat patients. There are over 20,000 patient visits each year at the Nothern California Hospital and as always, all services are provided to patients regardless of a families ability to pay. Programs Programs Patient Services Description Shriners Hospitals for Children specializes in treating children with orthopaedic conditions, burn injuries, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate. This includes treating conditions and injuries like scoliosis, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, club foot, missing, amputated, or deficient limbs; burns; spinal cord injury, and cleft lip and palate. Shriners Hospitals for Children also specializes in research and education in the pediatric orthopaedic, burn and spinal cord injury fields. For the past few years the hospital has ranked as one of the top 50 pediatric orthopaedic programs in conjuction with UC Davis Children's Hospital. The Northern California Shriners Hospital also is distinguished as the region's most active and most noted pediatric burn center. SHCNC measures the success of our programs by tracking the following domains: Barrier-free access to pediatric surgical specialty care maximized potential of each individual child s life. 4
