39 th Biennial Convention in Baltimore Michelle Edmonds & Sabrina Walton Sigma Theta Tau held its 39 th Biennial Convention in Baltimore, Maryland on November 3- November 7 th. The theme: Vision to Action: Global Health Through Collaboration, brought approximately 2,000 nurse leaders from 33 countries. The convention was preceded by preconference, in which registrants were able to partake in dynamic lectures including information about disaster preparedness and evidence-based practice in the clinical setting. Six of the Lambda Rho Chapter-at-Large members were in attendance and three also presented (Lucy Trice, Li Loriz, and Kathy Bloom). Chapter President Joy McConnell and Kathy Bloom served as Lambda Rho s delegates for the convention. Networking opportunities were abound as, in addition to attending the speaker presentations, attendees had the opportunity to attend book signings, visit exhibits and attend poster sessions. Many innovative ideas were on display in the poster sessions and speaker presentations that stimulated interest in the attendees. Topics discussed ranged from nursing practice to education to administration. The outgoing President of Sigma Theta Tau International, Dr. Carol Picard, gave a call to action that emphasized collaborating with global partners in nursing and healthcare. Plenary speakers, such as Anne Ryder who volunteered and interviewed Mother Theresa, supported this call with their fantastic presentations showing how one person can truly make a huge difference in the health of people. UNF faculty presented a symposium Targeting success: Creative strategies for retaining nursing students Symposium Papers Access and entry: Making admission decisions Dr. Lucy Trice Adapt a thon: Getting them off to a good start Dr. Kathaleen Bloom SUCCEED: Helping those who struggle Dr. Lillia Loriz Dr. Kathaleen Bloom also presented Improving student outcomes: Shifting the focus from teaching to learning It was an exciting time to be part of Sigma Theta Tau and the "nursing energy" generated was inspiring!

Evidence-based Practice Kathaleen Bloom On November 15, 2007, some 50 people gathered to listen as Dr. Stevens presented an overview of evidence-based practice at the University Center on the University of North Florida campus. Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the process of finding, appraising and applying scientific evidence to the treatment and management of health care. EBP seeks to integrate the best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values and preferences to guide best nursing practice and to produce positive results in terms of patient outcomes. Kathaleen Bloom, PhD, CNM, is the Associate Director for Undergraduate Studies, University of North Florida,. She teaches health assessment, nursing research, evidence-based practice, & women s health. Dr. Stevens provided a excellent overview of the process as well as many valuable resources for clinicians, administrators, educators and students. Information about EBP may be found at the following websites: http://www.acestar.uthscsa.edu/default.html http://nursing.asu.edu/caep/index.htm http://www.joannabriggs.edu.au/about/ eb_nursing.php The primary impetus for evidence-based practice in healthcare and nursing is that we want to make excellent clinical decisions in the care we deliver. The essential role of the nurse is to select interventions that will change the client s situation.
