Terms and conditions of application Josef G. Knoll European Science Award 2010 of the Foundation fiat panis, in succession to the Eiselen-Foundation The Eiselen-Foundation presented this science award every two years since 1986 with the aim of supporting young academics whose work focuses on helping to reduce hunger and malnutrition in developing countries. This will be continued by the Foundation fiat panis from 2010 on. The award is named after Professor Dr. Josef G. Knoll, the pioneer of agricultural research in Germany with regard to developing countries (biography enclosed). 1. The value of the award is EUR 30,000. It can be divided between up to three recipients (a minimum of EUR 10,000 per award winner). An independent scientific jury decides on the award. We reserve the right to withhold or to grant only part of the total amount. The decision is up to the jury. The objective of the award is to encourage young academics whose research concentrates on solutions to mitigate hunger in food deficit countries. The research findings must be user-oriented and suitable to contribute towards: - improving the status of food and nutrition security of a certain local population; - reducing the impact of hunger (undernutrition and malnutrition). The work can deal with one of the following disciplines: Agricultural sciences: Plant production, plant protection and plant breeding; Soil sciences; Animal production, including animal hygiene, fishery and aquaculture; Agricultural engineering; Agricultural economics and social sciences of developing countries; Ecology and biology; Resource management and protection, including water; Nutrition sciences; Geosciences; 4

Food technology; Post-harvest management; Agroforestry. Preference will be given to scientific work that shows how the research findings can be applied. Of particular interest is scientific work that has been carried out with the participation of local people and results of which have been tested under local conditions. A minimum requirement is that the work outlines suggestions how the results can be tested and applied. 2. Eligible are individuals under the age of 40 and teams whose members have not reached their 40 th birthday by the application deadline, providing they have successfully completed a doctorate at a European university. Applicants are requested to provide proof that these requirements are met. 4. The submitted work should - at the time of application - be published or submitted for publishing. The date of publication should be not more than two years prior the application deadline. The work can be in German or English; three copies must be submitted. The submitted work will remain with the Foundation. Each work must include a summary, written in German or English, consisting of not more than five pages. The summary should contain: Definition of the research problem; Research questions; Objective of the research; Methodological approach; Empirical background, data base and results. 5. Applicants must affirm that the work does not violate the intellectual property of any third party, that no literature has been used without referencing and that the submitted work is not an undergraduate project or a Master s thesis. The work must not have been and may not be submitted in application for another award before the decision of the jury. If this regulation is violated the work will be excluded from the competition. Applicants already awarded with a prize for their work are not allowed to apply. 5

6. Applicants must also submit an essay (maximum two pages) that explains the relevance of the submitted work with regard to the objective of the award. In addition, a report by the academic supervisor concerning the submitted work is required. Applicants may add a list of their previous scientific publications. Only work with full supporting documentation will be considered. 7. A jury, which is composed of three distinguished university teachers and appointed by the Foundation s board of trustees, decides which scientific works are honoured. The jury makes its decisions with a simple majority of votes. It may consult further experts. The jury may ask applicants for any additional information or further explanation deemed necessary for the assessment of the work. In such cases the work remains in the assessment process only if the deadline, set for replying to the questions and remarks is met. The jury will not give reasons for its decisions. 8. The deadline for all applications is April 30, 2010 (date of postmark). Once the jury process has been completed, by early August 2010 at the latest, all applicants will be informed of the decisions of the jury. 9. The award(s) will be presented during Tropentag 2010, to which the award winner(s) will be invited in due course. At this event the award winner(s) will be obliged, at Foundation s request, to give a brief presentation of the relevant content of their work. 10. The Foundation will not publish any submitted work or claim any rights. It is, however, entitled to announce and publish the names and addresses of award winners and the title and summary of the successful work. 11. PROFESSOR DR. JOSEF G. KNOLL 26.06.1899-12.09.1976 He came originally from Ulm and studied agriculture in Munich and Hohenheim, where he graduated. In his Ph.D. thesis he dealt with the plant societies of permanent grassland and devoted his scientific work to pasture management and forage production. An area with very little research activities so that he became the inventor of the first pasture map of Germany. From 1937 to 1945 he was a professor at the University of Leipzig. In 1946 he was instructed to set up a state teaching and research department for pasture and feeding stuff cultivation in Wehrda (State of Hessen). Three years later, he became the director of the research and extension institute for mountains farming of the former state of South Baden in Donaueschingen. In 1954 Prof. Knoll was assigned department director at the FAO (Food- and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations) in Rome. He became the first German department director and was responsible for plant production and plant protection. During his work in Rome he was an important contributor to the world seeds campaign of Dr. F. T. Wahlen which aimed to provide sufficient high quality seeds for developing countries with food deficits to increase crop yields. Furthermore he devoted his work in fighting against desert grasshoppers. Egypt was one of the major working areas of Prof. Knoll, which became under his advice a rice exporting country instead of a rice importing country. In 1961 he was appointed by the University of Hohenheim on the newly established chair for tropical agriculture. Until his retirement in 1966, he formed the institute which became the nucleus of today s Centre for Agriculture in the Tropics and Subtropics at the University of Hohenheim. He was a pioneer of agricultural research in developing countries in Germany. After his retirement Professor Knoll returned to his birthplace Ulm. There was a long-standing, close friendship between J. G. Knoll and the Eiselen family. 1989 the Eiselen-Foundation decided to name her science prize after Prof. Knoll to keep the memory for this outstanding scientist. 7
