During this time frame there were also a number of other Association and Societies organized around the United States. 1. Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War- Created in 1881 by the GAR, membership is open to men who have an ancestor who either belonged to or was eligible to join the GAR (i.e., a Union Civil War veteran). A limited number of Associates may be part of a Camp. Associates are men who otherwise qualify for membership except for the existence of a Union Civil War ancestor. 2. Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War - Created in 1887, membership is open to women with Union Civil War veterans as ancestors as well as to spouses and daughters of members of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. 3. Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War - Women with Union Civil War ancestors who either belonged to or could qualify for membership in the GAR are welcome to join a Tent of this Order. 4. Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic - An organization of ladies who trace their ancestry to a Union Civil War soldier, sailor, Marine or member of the Revenue Cutter Service. They meet in groups called Circles. 5. Woman's Relief Corps - The official woman's auxiliary of the GAR. Little known facts about the Gettysburg Battlefield Camp Colt was established in 1917, and opened at Gettysburg National Military Park in March, 1918 as the first post to train soldiers to use tanks during World War I. The main section of the camp was in the fields made famous 55 years before, by Pickett s Charge. The commander of Camp Colt was Captain Dwight D. Eisenhower. Eisenhower would earn the rank of Major, and the Distinguished Service Medal for his efforts at Camp Colt, and he and his wife, Mamie, fell in love with the area. After they retired from the military, the Eisenhower s made their home near Gettysburg, west of Seminary Ridge. After doing some research about Camp Colt, PDC Bruce Kolb and I decided to see if we you find some of the areas mention in photographs and information on Camp Colt. This is what we found in out last visit to Gettysburg, PA for the 2014 Remembrance Day Parade.
