The Healing Art of MEDICINE A Better Me for a Better You PROGRAM OVERVIEW The symposium will build on the many messages of an educational documentary called Patient: A Surgeon s Journey. The film chronicles the life of Dr. Jeffrey Piehler who was a cardiothoracic surgeon specializing in the treatment of cancer when he developed prostate cancer at the age of 54, at the peak of his career. He lived with prostate cancer for more than 12 years during which time his perception evolved from that of a physician to a patient. His eloquence in describing this journey with cancer and how he learned to better embrace life was captured in the filming of the documentary and provides a unique perspective for both patients diagnosed with this disease and the health care providers who treat them. The focus of this symposium is to build on the many messages of the film with one of the core issues being work-life balance. Currently, physician and health care provider burnout is at an all-time high with some studies showing greater than 50 percent of health care providers exhibiting some symptoms of burnout. Alarmingly, there are more than 400 reported physician suicides which occur in the US each year. There is a significant need for education and open discussions on ways to improve career satisfaction; and to provide a reminder that it is through taking the very best care of ourselves that we ultimately provide the very best care to our patients.
