Co-investigator of grant entitled The RESPECT Program: Recognizing Exceptional Students Partnering to Expand Commitment for Long-Term Care. Awarded $100,000 by the Northwest Health Foundation. This was the second largest grant ever received by nursing faculty. The purpose was to partner with a long-term system of care (nursing homes and other levels of care), develop strategies to educate students about professional nursing opportunities in these settings and increase the number of baccalaureate graduates who practice in this setting. Fall 2007 Sabbatical. The purpose of my sabbatical was to begin research on the life and times of Emily Loveridge, RN, who founded the Good Samaritan Training Program for Nurses in 1890. My interest in doing this was a result of the Evolution of Nursing course I developed and taught as a VP elective. Both primary and secondary sources were explored in relation to her work. 1998 Georgene Siemsen (Principal Investigator), Pam Wheeler (Co-investigator), and Danita Ewing (Co-investigator) of grant entitled The Phenomenology of the Early Dementia Experience for the Client and the Primary Support Person. 7 2014 Reflection on Practice: a Guided Clinical Seminar Experience with Undergraduate Students. Data from students about their experience using a guided narrative during clinical seminar has been collected and analyzed. A manuscript is in the process of being written and will be submitted to the Journal of Nursing Education. (More detail about this is in Section 3.) 2007-2008 Emily Lemoine Loveridge (1860-1941). My research on the work of Ms. Loveridge was gathered during and immediately after my sabbatical. (A manuscript is in progress.) 1998-2003 Co-investigator. The Phenomenology of the Early Dementia Experience for the Client and the Primary Support Person, a qualitative study funded by the Alzheimer s Research Alliance of Oregon. Principal Investigator, Georgene Siemsen, RN, MN, GNP;co-investigator Danita Ewing, RN, PhD. Initial funding was a grant from the Alzheimer s Research Alliance of Oregon. This was a qualitative study. The interviews were completed and transcripts analyzed for themes. At this point in time the primary investigator, who had the information, was unable to participate in the study. I had just started a new position at WSU Vancouver and did not feel I could continue this work nor could the other coinvestigator. 1990-1993 Co-investigator. 12 1977-1999 Certified in Oregon as a Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. This is an advanced practice certificate which requires at least a Master s degree in a nursing specialty, 960 hours of practice every five years, and continuing education for maintenance of certification in one s specialty area. The Oregon State Board of Nursing provides oversight to nurse practitioners in Oregon. In Oregon, nurses practice to the full extent of their scope of practice. That means they can practice independently (including diagnosis, treatment, and prescriptive authority). They can apply to insurance companies and if included on those panels, bill for services. 1991-1999 Faculty, Oregon Geriatric Education Center Summer Institute. The Oregon Geriatric Education Center is a consortium of faculty and staff from OHSU, OSU, and PSU. Its purpose is to provide continuing education and professional development for those in the field of aging. March 7, 1995 Group facilitator, Multnomah County Conference to prepare for the White House Conference on Aging. This planning event was sponsored by the Portland/Multnomah Commission on Aging. Every ten years, the White House sponsors this conference which focuses on issues of concern related to aging and older adults. This conference helps frame policy directives for this population. In March of 1995, the Portland/Multnomah Commission on Aging convened older adults, providers, and other to discuss and determine priorities to take
13 forward to the White House Conference on Aging later that year. I served as a group facilitator for some of these discussions. 1986-1988 Participated in the development and production of videotapes (used by the local chapter of the Alzheimer s Association) related to families coping with a family member with dementia entitled: 1. Alzheimer s Disease: A Family Perspective 2. Managing with Alzheimer s Disease 3. Prevention and Management of Aggressive Behavior in the Elderly Few videotapes were available during this time 5that addressed the issues noted above. The local chapter of the Alzheimer s Association recognized this need and developed these tapes which were then used to educate others.
