In this position, leadership in the form of program development, determining and measuring quality indicators, overseeing day-to-day operations and mentoring of staff was provided. During this time I was certified as a Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and practiced in this role while continuing to develop, implement, and coordinate this new program for older adults. As faculty, I coordinated the clinical component of the Foundations course, had a clinical group each semester, and taught the theory component. Additional responsibilities included committee work, advising, and community service. I was in Kandahar where a colleague and I taught in a nursing program. The curriculum we utilized had been developed by the World Health Organization and was 18 months in length. During the second year of our service, we worked closely with an Afghan nurse counterpart who had been educated in Kabul. This article focuses on the life and 40 year career of Emily Loveridge, RN at Good Samaritan Hospital. She founded the Good Samaritan School of Nursing in 1890 and ten years later became the hospital s CEO. Many other similar presentations in previous years. Grants, Sabbatical 2007-2010 Diane Welch and Pam Wheeler. Co-investigator of grant entitled The RESPECT Program: Recognizing Exceptional Students Partnering to Expand Commitment for Long-Term Care. Awarded $100,000 by the Northwest Health Foundation. This was the second largest grant ever received by nursing faculty. The purpose was to partner with a long-term system of care (nursing homes and other levels of care), develop strategies to educate students about professional nursing opportunities in these settings and increase the number of baccalaureate graduates who practice in this setting. Fall 2007 Sabbatical. The purpose of my sabbatical was to begin research on the life and times of Emily Loveridge, RN, who founded the Good Samaritan Training Program for Nurses in 1890. My interest in doing this was a result of the Evolution of Nursing course I developed and taught as a VP elective. Both primary and secondary sources were explored in relation to her work. 1998 Georgene Siemsen (Principal Investigator), Pam Wheeler (Co-investigator), and Danita Ewing (Co-investigator) of grant entitled The Phenomenology of the Early Dementia Experience for the Client and the Primary Support Person. Awarded $9500 from the Alzheimer s Research Alliance of Oregon. Research

7 2014 Reflection on Practice: a Guided Clinical Seminar Experience with Undergraduate Students. Data from students about their experience using a guided narrative during clinical seminar has been collected and analyzed. A manuscript is in the process of being written and will be submitted to the Journal of Nursing Education. (More detail about this is in Section 3.) 2007-2008 Emily Lemoine Loveridge (1860-1941). My research on the work of Ms. Loveridge was gathered during and immediately after my sabbatical. (A manuscript is in progress.) 1998-2003 Co-investigator. The Phenomenology of the Early Dementia Experience for the Client and the Primary Support Person, a qualitative study funded by the Alzheimer s Research Alliance of Oregon. Principal Investigator, Georgene Siemsen, RN, MN, GNP;co-investigator Danita Ewing, RN, PhD. Initial funding was a grant from the Alzheimer s Research Alliance of Oregon. This was a qualitative study. The interviews were completed and transcripts analyzed for themes. At this point in time the primary investigator, who had the information, was unable to participate in the study. I had just started a new position at WSU Vancouver and did not feel I could continue this work nor could the other coinvestigator. 1990-1993 Co-investigator. Development and Evaluation of Measures to be Used with Family Caregivers of Persons with Alzheimer s Disease, a study funded by the Alzheimer s Disease Center of Oregon. This group was comprised of academicians in the field of aging and those of us who were working in programs targeted to older adults. 1991 Co-Investigator. The Family s Role in Early Diagnosis and Service Utilization in Patients with Alzheimer s Disease, a study supported by the Alzheimer s Disease Center of Oregon. Principal Investigator, David Morgan, PhD; Co-investigator, Linda Boise, PhD. Committee Activities Linfield College 2008-2011 Curriculum Committee. 5/2011-9/2011 Linfield College Strategic Planning Sub-committee regarding Faculty Life. 2011 (Spring) Task Force: Health Sciences. This was a task force appointed by the College Curriculum Committee to develop a recommendation regarding the transition of the Health Sciences Program from the Portland Campus. 2006-2008 Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities Accreditation Steering Committee and Co-Chair, Standard Four. I was asked by the Interim Dean to

8 represent Portland on this Committee. The committee was co-chaired by Barbara Seidman and Dan Preston. Brenda Marshall and I were responsible for developing/writing Standard Four. I co-chaired the Education Committee from 2004-2007. The goal of the coalition was to enhance gerontologic nursing education in baccalaureate nursing programs. Faculty speaker is selected by graduating seniors. 1999 Professional Development Award, Linfield College. Purpose: attend training to be certified in administration of the Myers-Briggs Type Inventory (MBTI). This was an intensive training (one week) that is required of those wishing to administer the MBTI. In our former curriculum, this was one of the self-assessments administered to students in their first semester of study and later used with students in their final semester.

11 1997 Peterson Fellowship, Linfield College, School of Nursing. Purpose: to study factors affecting nursing and health care at Legacy Health System. During this fellowship I worked with Cindy Evans, Nursing Administrator at Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital. The information regarding trends in health care delivery was then integrated into the Leading and Managing in Nursing course I taught in the students last semester of study. During this experience she presented two theory classes and co-supervised students in their clinical experiences for Leading & Managing in Nursing, which I was teaching. As her preceptor, we met regularly and discussed issues related to nursing education. I also provided guidance and feedback regarding the teaching she did with our students during the semester. 12 1977-1999 Certified in Oregon as a Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. This is an advanced practice certificate which requires at least a Master s degree in a nursing specialty, 960 hours of practice every five years, and continuing education for maintenance of certification in one s specialty area. The Oregon State Board of Nursing provides oversight to nurse practitioners in Oregon. In Oregon, nurses practice to the full extent of their scope of practice. That means they can practice independently (including diagnosis, treatment, and prescriptive authority). They can apply to insurance companies and if included on those panels, bill for services. 1991-1999 Faculty, Oregon Geriatric Education Center Summer Institute. The Oregon Geriatric Education Center is a consortium of faculty and staff from OHSU, OSU, and PSU. Its purpose is to provide continuing education and professional development for those in the field of aging. When I was involved in the organization, it was in its early phase of development and offered a summer educational program related to aging. 1996-1997 Delegate from Linfield College School of Nursing to Western Institute of Nursing 1996 Member of a consultant panel for Caregiver Health Risk Appraisal Study, a proposal funded by the Alzheimer s Research Alliance of Oregon, Principal Investigator, Linda Boise, PhD 1995-1998 Member, Primary Care Provider Task Force on Dementia Management, Alzheimer s Research Center of Oregon, OHSU. This task force met periodically to discuss how best to provide information to primary care providers, such as physicians, on the diagnosis and management of clients with this disease. 1984-1995 Adjunct Professor, Oregon Health Sciences University, Department of Family Nursing. During this time I would attend graduate nursing education classes and speak to a requested topic related to gerontologic nursing. October, 1995 Guest speaker. Managing Your Health Care, a Multnomah Cable Television production as part of their Senior Issues series. March 7, 1995 Group facilitator, Multnomah County Conference to prepare for the White House Conference on Aging. This planning event was sponsored by the Portland/Multnomah Commission on Aging. Every ten years, the White House sponsors this conference which focuses on issues of concern related to aging and older adults. This conference helps frame policy directives for this population. In March of 1995, the Portland/Multnomah Commission on Aging convened older adults, providers, and other to discuss and determine priorities to take

13 forward to the White House Conference on Aging later that year. I served as a group facilitator for some of these discussions. 1986-1988 Participated in the development and production of videotapes (used by the local chapter of the Alzheimer s Association) related to families coping with a family member with dementia entitled: 1. Alzheimer s Disease: A Family Perspective 2. Managing with Alzheimer s Disease 3. Prevention and Management of Aggressive Behavior in the Elderly Few videotapes were available during this time 5that addressed the issues noted above. The local chapter of the Alzheimer s Association recognized this need and developed these tapes which were then used to educate others. Today there are many current resources available to educate providers as well as family caregivers. 1987 Spring/Summer.
