911 Means You Fire Protection Administrators command firefighting operations, from prevention to arson investigations. They are problem-solvers who are critical to the reduction in loss of life as well as damage to property and the environment during major fire incidents. In this career, I can: Manage the day-to-day operations of a fire department Assess the fire danger in high-risk regions Investigate suspicious blazes for arson Improve firefighter safety Assist property owners in reclaiming financial losses Teach children and communities how to prevent fires Who hires fire protection administrators? Every city, county and state government agency, as well as the U.S. Forest Service, has a stake in fire safety and prevention. The demand for fire protection administrators is so high that career opportunities are limitless. Administrators find jobs in both the public and private sector, serving as fire prevention specialists and educators, fire chiefs, insurance claims adjusters, arson investigators, even consultants to government committees that direct fire protection. Samples of minimum to median annual base salaries: Fire Chief...$52,700 Fire Prevention Supervisor...$44,830 Battalion Chief...$45,300 Source: Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2000-2001 Edition

Laura Mapes Fire Marshall/Division Chief Union City, California Fire Department When I started my job, I faced the challenge of building a fire prevention bureau from scratch. My education at Cal State L.A. gave me the ability to develop creative solutions to complicated and/or technical situations that I now encounter on a daily basis. The unique combination of engineering, management and public administration classes also helped broaden the skills I needed to succeed in such a dynamic fire service career. Thanks to the knowledge gained from teaching professionals with a wide range of backgrounds, I am now a member of a respected and effective management team. Mel Hokanson Assistant Fire Chief Los Angeles County Fire Department As an assistant fire chief in charge of 260 firefighters and 16 fire stations in nine cities, leadership and people skills are critical. My education at Cal State L.A. helped prepare me for my career by teaching me about administrative and government operations. Earning a degree in Fire Protection Administration has been crucial to my success.
