Thinking about appying for a Nationa Teaching Feowship? A series of pop-up events in support of peope panning to appy for NTF2017 and ooking forward to NTF2018. Led by Members of the Committee of the Association of Nationa Teaching Feows (ANTF) and Coeagues March 2017 http://ntf-association.com @ntf_tweet

How to use these sides? These sides are intended as a guide for anyone running workshops about the scheme this year. Fee free to use any of the content in your own presentations. The content is argey from the HEA website, and no further amendments have been received from the HEA to date. Points to emphasize are in green text, and ANTF comments are in red.

The teaching feowship scheme is an umbrea scheme made up of a range of awards: The Nationa Teaching Feows Scheme; Coaborative Award for Teaching Exceence; Teaching Exceence Ambassadors. Most of the advice offered in this presentation is taken directy from the HEA website but aways doube check by referring to their website: https://www.heacademy.ac.uk/individuas/nationa-teaching-feowshipscheme/ntf?utm_source=crm&utm_campaign=professiona %20Practice%20-%20NTFS&utm_medium=Emai&utm_content=HEA %20Update%20March%202017

Background The purpose of the Nationa Teaching Feowship Scheme is to recognise, reward and ceebrate individuas who are judged to make an outstanding impact on the student earning experience, and provide the means to deveop a proactive community of Nationa Teaching Feows (NTFs). The Higher Education Academy (HEA) organises and runs the Scheme (with funding from the Higher Education Funding Counci for Engand (HEFCE), the Higher Education Funding Counci for Waes (HEFCW) and the Department for the Economy (DfE) Northern Ireand (now incorporating the responsibiities of DELNI) with advice and guidance from the UK Teaching Exceence Awards Advisory Pane (the Pane). The Pane advises on the criteria, the processes of assessment and moderation, and the seection of the winners. The Pane consists of a range of representatives from across the sector and other reevant stakehoders.

An emergent scheme It s been running since 2000; There are now amost 750 NTFs across a discipines and types of HEI The scheme has changed over the years and is changing further now; The very substantia cash reward has been reduced over the years; Advice from ANTF: It s sti reay worth doing!

Key things to note for 2017! Cosing date 12 noon 25 th Apri 2017 Nominations must be submitted by the specified NTFS/ CATE coordinator in each institution. To register as the NTFS/ CATE coordinator and gain og in detais for the onine nomination system emai ntfsindividua@heacademy.ac.uk ANTF advice: don t eave submission to the ast minute and get a time for signing it into the VC s diary!

What s new this year? A significanty reduced word ength aowed (down to 3,500 words from 5,000); Reduced word ength for CV (down from 1,500 to 1,000 words); The marking scheme shows more ceary how points are awarded; There s a strengthened emphasis on the importance of it being one s own work and that the HEA wi use pagiarism software to check appications; There is a greater emphasis on the student voice and evidence from students; You need to pre-register in order to upoad an appication. ANTF advice: pre-register now!

What s aso new? The nominee shoud not be the team eader of a current CATE nomination. Staff contracted to HE providers in Engand, Waes or Northern Ireand but working at an overseas campus wi be eigibe to be nominated. A nominee shoud be a Feow (any category) of the HEA or be working towards Feowship.

Eigibiity Eigibe institutions are invited to nominate up to three individua members of staff who ceary demonstrate exceence in teaching and/or supporting the higher education earning experience of students. In nominating these individuas, institutions are strongy encouraged to consider the fu diversity of roes that support the student earning experience. The text of the Caim shoud be the work of the nominee ony. The HEA may process nominations through anti pagiarism software.

What are the benefits to individuas? It is widey recognised in HE in the UK and internationay as difficut to achieve and a mark of quaity as awards are made each year from a arge number of nominations. It opens doors: many NTFs find they can use the award as a springboard to progress their careers. You join a nationa community of ike-minded professionas who are passionate about teaching.the ANTF network is a fantasticay supportive community of earning and their annua symposia are enjoyabe networking events; The cash eement can give you some fexibiity to attend conferences and to trave where institutiona budgets are constrained.

What are the benefits for institutions? Increasingy used as a mode to deveop and extend university-wide schemes, aiming to raise the status of teaching and insti pride in the profession and student earning. Can be a foca point for discussions about innovation and professiona deveopment past NTFS funding has enabed NTFs to capitaise on their status and bid for extra funding for research and projects to enhance earning and teaching. Can enabe staff to cross boundaries, coaborating with coeagues in other discipines and forging inks with universities nationay and internationay.

Nominations In deveoping nominations, eigibe institutions shoud identify what is innovative, incusive and exceent practice within their own organisationa settings (as we as, in brief, and where appropriate, how far this may refect nationa and/or internationa practices). The HEA and the UK Teaching Exceence Awards Pane recognise that exceence in teaching and earning support wi be situated within specific academic, professiona and institutiona contexts and consider that exceent practice shoud be incusive practice. Athough the HEA and the UK Teaching Exceence Awards Advisory Pane appreciate that some advice or assistance from the institution or an externa mentor may be deemed appropriate, the text of the Caim shoud be the work of the nominee ony. The HEA may process nominations through anti-pagiarism software.

Career stage, sustained impact and equa opportunities Eigibe institutions are strongy encouraged to nominate individuas at any stage of their career who undertake any roe(s) which ceary contribute to the enhancement of the student earning experience. Nominees shoud demonstrate impact on student earning over a sustained period. The HEA is committed to equaity of opportunity. In this process it ensures that no nominee is treated ess favouraby than others on the grounds of gender, race, nationaity, ethnic or nationa origin, reigious or poitica beiefs, disabiity, marita status, socia background, famiy circumstances, sexua orientation, gender reassignment, spent crimina convictions, age, or for any other unawfu reason. The HEA and the funders expect institutions to ensure their own processes to identify nominees are grounded in appropriate equaity and diversity good practice.

Important to note: Nominations are made by a centra contact at the institution (NTFS institutiona contact) through an onine system hosted by the HEA s Virtua Learning Environment (VLE). The NTFS institutiona contact wi have been issued with a username and password for this system. Fu instructions wi be provided. A provider can withdraw a candidate up to one week prior to the Pane resuts meeting. ANTF advice: famiiarise yoursef with the porta soon!

Nomination documents shoud comprise as separate documents: Caim for Nationa Teaching Feowship: a statement written by the individua of how they demonstrate exceence reevant to each of the three award criteria (maximum 3500 words). Signed Statement of Support from the institution s Vice-Chanceor or equivaent, this document shoud be submitted as a Word document, however can aso be submitted as a scanned PDF to incude the signature (maximum 1000 words). Brief Curricuum Vitae (maximum 1000 words). Nomination Form avaiabe via the HEA website.

The three criteria Individua exceence: evidence of enhancing and transforming the student earning experience commensurate with the individua s context and the opportunities afforded by it. Raising the profie of exceence: evidence of supporting coeagues and infuencing support for student earning; demonstrating impact and engagement beyond the nominee s immediate academic or professiona roe. Deveoping exceence: evidence of the nominee s commitment to her/his ongoing professiona deveopment with regard to teaching and earning and/ or earning support.

The Caim for Nationa Teaching Feowship: nominees are required to present their exceence caim against the three criteria with reference to exampes of supporting evidence, which may incude (but need not be confined to): student feedback and evauations, feedback from peer observations, feedback from other nationa engagements, student support materias, work with other partner institutions and organisations. The decision of what constitutes appropriate evidence rests with the nominating institution and the individua nominee but nominees are encouraged to ensure that the student voice is expicit in their nomination. Individuas from various academic discipines inevitaby demonstrate different communication and anaytica styes and this wi be accounted for in the assessment process. As such there is no stye that is expected in appications and exampes wi be assessed and marked for their contribution to the criteria as a whoe.

Signed Statement of Support: The supporting statement from the institution s Vice Chanceor or equivaent is an essentia and critica aspect of the nomination. It is recommended that the nominee s caim for a NTF is read prior to composing the institutiona supporting statement. Pease provide evauative comments under the 3 criteria. In particuar, the statement shoud: endorse the vaidity of the nominee s caim for exceence, provide an institutiona context within which the nominee has been identified as exceent, provide confirmation of support of the nominee, shoud they be successfu, in terms of carrying out the requirements associated with a Nationa Teaching Feowship, provide any additiona supporting information which might be most appropriatey expressed by the Vice-Chanceor or equivaent rather than the nominee her/ himsef. provide the name, job tite and signature of the supporter (eectronic signatures are permitted within this document)

The CV Nominees are advised to focus on their experience and outputs with a view to demonstrating a robust commitment to enhancing and supporting student earning and deivering, or faciitating, teaching exceence. The formatting requirements appy to the CV too. As a guide for the production of the CV the foowing headings may be incuded (but need not be confined to): Quaifications Awards Past empoyment, roes and achievements Current roes and appointments Nationa and internationa contributions to education or subject sector Pubications (education reated) Conference Papers and Workshop Faciitations Non-Accredited Training and Deveopment

Nomination Form: Nominees must submit a competed form with the three other nomination documents (i.e. Caim, Statement of Support and CV). Persona profies wi not be assessed as part of the appication. However, pease note that persona profies and quotes are a required component for a compete submission to the NTFS. These wi be used by the HEA for promotiona purposes when the winners are announced. In submitting images to the HEA, you are providing consent for the HEA to use your images for promotiona purposes or pubicity (the Purpose ). You confirm that you are the owner of any inteectua property rights or have an appropriate icence to share your images with the HEA and for the HEA to use your images for the Purpose.

Assessing the three criteria A nominees wi be assessed on the evidence provided in the core nomination documents (Caim, Statement of Support and CV) in reation to each of the three criteria. You can do this by emaiing ntfsindividua@heacademy.ac.uk Once you have pre-registered a username and og in wi be sent to you Each institution can submit appications for up to three NTFs To compete the appication submission the NTFS contact or coordinate must upoad a required documents to the onine system in a Zip fie before the cosing date, 19 Apri 2017 Nominees wi be informed of the outcomes in August 2017 and the Nationa Teaching Feowships wi be awarded at a ceebratory event in November 2017.

Writing good appications The next sides are advice on writing good appications based on a historic report by the HEA on what makes a successfu appication and on the experiences of NTFs in writing their own appications and supporting others over the years.

2013 advice on characteristics of successfu nominations: Criterion 1 Successfu nominations were abe to ceary demonstrate engagement of students and a transformative impact on their earning, the evidence to support this criterion was wide ranging and outstanding, and it was cear that the nominees teaching was not ony informed by pedagogy but that they further shaped these theories with their own research. The key words most often used by reviewers when describing successfu nominees/nominations in this criterion were: innovative, creative, impact, transformative, and incusive.

Characteristics of successfu nominations (2013): Criterion two Reviewers commented on successfu nominees being abe to evidence how they have supported student earning and infuenced change not ony amongst coeagues within their institution but aso nationay and internationay, and even within their oca communities. The exampes given by successfu nominees were we evidenced and underpinned by schoarship. The initiatives they put in pace within their institutions were we-deveoped and evauated in terms of their impact and disseminated both nationay and internationay through shared practice, education/teaching and earning committees, and at conferences. The key words and phrases most often used by reviewers when commenting on nominees/nominations successfu in this criterion were: eadership, mentor, infuence, impact, and nationa and internationa dissemination of practice.

Characteristics of successfu nominations (2013): Criterion three Successfu nominees demonstrated a continuous deveopment of persona and professiona practice and ooked to the future as we as the past, using a wide range of evidence to underpin their caims. Moreover, these nominees aso inked this deveopment to their practice in the cassroom/ earning environment. It is difficut to identify any key words associated with this section of the nomination as each submission is very persona. However, reviewers did comment that successfu nominees were engaged in refective practice, demonstrated a breadth and depth of engagement with CPD and often took advantage of both forma and informa earning and deveopment

Unsuccessfu nominations (2013) often: were not expicit in terms of addressing the criteria; offered itte in the way of evidence to underpin caims of exceence; acked breadth or depth; faied to make cear how the nominee s practice was exceent and/or transformative; focused on research rather than teaching and earning; incuded detais of work or projects that were in the eary stages of impementation with itte detai of evauation or impact; faied to give equa weighting to each of the three criteria or combined eements of different criteria

What kinds of evidence are convincing? (ANTF advice) Anything that gives externa vaidation to your caim, so that it is supported rather than being mere assertion; This is ikey to invove raiding your paudits fie for verbatim quotes demonstrating your exceence; These can be from modue evauations, feedback forums, student comments, etters and emais; Aim to coect a range of quotes from current and past students at different eves, past and current coeagues, managers, empoyers who take your students on pacement, externa examiners etc. You don t need to provide fu detai of each originator of quotes: former 2 nd -year student previous inemanager, empoyer of our graduates etc is sufficient detai.

Coecting and using evidence (ANTF advice) Quaitative data can be reay usefu: it s hepfu to incude statements such as Over the past five years my student evauations have averaged 80+ who said I was good or exceent, and this is higher than average within my department ; You are not expected (or aowed) to provide supporting documentation but your own HEI is expected to assure the vaidity of your appication; You shoud aim to match your evidence with the three criteria, so you can add quotes and data to each section.

You need to demonstrate schoarship and commitment to refection (ANTF advice) Your appication shoud incude reference to a handfu of texts (books, journa artices etc) from which your educationa phiosophy and teaching approaches have derived; The appication, however, is a about you, so you need to use the first person singuar and refer to your achievements rather than your teams, ( Shy bairns get nowt! ); It s hepfu to incude exampes of where you ve changed your practices in the ight of experience or where your schoarship has guided you to change.

ANTF advice for peope thinking of appying in future years: There is no certainty the scheme wi run in 2018, athough it is anticipated it wi; If you are thinking of appying, it s worth thinking about buiding your profie further over the next year or so; Keep yoursef up-to-date by reguary scrutinising the HEA website for information.

How can your institution hep you? They coud: If you haven t aready got one, hep you find a mentor who is an NTF or vey famiiar with the scheme to guide your progress; Ceebrate your merited achievements by recognising you by awarding you an interna teaching award; Encourage you to share your good practice internay through your university annua teaching and earning conference, CPD seminars, on your PGCHE course for new ecturers, Teachmeet events or simiar; Offer support for you to disseminate your good practice beyond your institution, for exampe, enabing you to present at nationa or internationa conferences. ANTF woud ove to see you at our conference open to NTFs and non-ntfs in Leeds Beckett on 10 th May for exampe and the ca for papers coses at midnight on Friday 17th March 2017

ANTF advice: How can you hep yoursef? Why not: Draft an appication based on this year s guideines (whie being aware that the guidance may change year on year) and show it to your institutiona NTF eader or mentor for initia comment; Make sure you achieve feowship of the HEA, ideay at a eve commensurate with your roe (assessors might not be impressed to see someone very senior with ony an Associate Feowship); As the third criterion is often the one that is east we covered, use this next year very positivey to undertake penty of CPD and refect on it, not just what you did, but aso the outcomes and impact it had on your practice.

(ANTF advice): what some peope say: Being a Nationa Teaching Feow has changed my ife, my career, everything! I am certain my NTFS directy contributed to me getting my promotion and my professorship! I ve just oved the trave, the networking and the opportunities being an NTFS has given me! [The ceebratory dinner was] the best occasion (other than my wedding) in my ife! It s been fantastic to have my teaching recognised as much as my research!
