November 19, 2017 Parish Bulletin Issue 39 Volume XLIX 2025 Stuart Avenue Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70808-3979 (225) 343-6657 Fax (225) 344-6847 Website: http://church.aloysius.org/ Sunday, November 19, 2017, 33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time Jesus told his disciples this parable: "A man going on a journey called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them. To one he gave five talents; to another, two; to a third, one-to each according to his ability. Then he went away. After a long time the master of those servants came back and settled accounts with them. The one who had received five talents came forward bringing the additional five. He said, 'Master, you gave me five talents. See, I have made five more.' His master said to him, 'Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master's joy.'" MT 25:14-15, 19-21 Thanksgiving Prayer O Heavenly Father: We thank Thee for food and remember the hungry. We thank Thee for health and remember the sick. We thank Thee for friends and remember the friendless. We thank Thee for freedom and remember the enslaved. May these remembrances stir us to service. That Thy gifts to us may be used for others. Amen. - Dear Abby Columnist November 19, 2017 33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time

November 19, 2017 Our Challenge Dear friends, In the thirty-first chapter of the Book of Proverbs, a husband sings the praises of a beloved wife who is lovely and compassionate. All of the rewards that come from such a marriage are based on trust. Two people risk loving one another, believing it will turn out well. We do not live in an absolutely secure world. If we are in the midst of peace and serenity, we may be overtaken by strife and danger at any moment. The good and happy life must be lived in the midst of uncertainty and surprise. It is God s promise that he will increase our talents if we only use what we have. If we do not risk what we have, we will never gain very much. There is no greater risk or greater joy than giving ourselves in love or spending ourselves for justice and peace. Jesus illustrates the varying levels of responsibility and the differing amounts of gifts. In the parable of this weekend s gospel passage, gifts are given according to natural ability, but all who increase equally are rewarded equally. Their trading of the talents signifies the faithful use that one should make of gifts and opportunities of service to God. Equal worth does not necessarily mean equal compensation. Some positions require more skill or ability and are thus compensated accordingly. The two servants who did well are rewarded in different amounts, but both are praised identically. Sometimes we are so very overwhelmed with all the problems in the world, we feel powerless to help in any way. But God does not require us to solve all the problems. What He requires is a willing heart to use the gifts He has so graciously given each one of us. Even a person who is bed-ridden can still pray for others. Have a good week and Happy Thanksgiving! Love and prayers, Father Randy Adoration Saturday, November 18 Join us in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in Gonzaga Hall Chapel (old parish office) following a Communion Service at 8:00 a.m. Please sign in when you arrive. GIVING TREE For many years St. Aloysius Parish has come together during the Advent Season with our traditional Giving Tree. As our focus turns to Christmas and Christmas shopping, the Giving Tree provides a way for parishioners to help those in need. St. Aloysius parishioners and students have worked to design ornaments that represent each of the particular ministries that make up the Giving Tree. You may choose an ornament from the baskets at the side doors of the church from November 18th through December 17th OR until the ornaments run out. Please pay particular attention to the items requested and the deadline for your gift to be returned to the church. You may keep your ornament as a reminder of our parish effort to help those in need. Please remember to pray for all those in need this holiday season. A special prayer is included on the back of the Giving Tree booklets located on the tables along with the ornaments. Please return your UNWRAPPED gifts by the requested due date (December 10th or December 17th) TO THE DESIGNATED BOXES in the BACK of the church. Booklets located at the side doors of the church detail the 11 ministries that are a part of this year's Giving Tree. Please take a moment to read about the various groups who need your help, then grab the ornament of your choice! Please contact Arline Mistretta at 769-2433 or smistretta2@cox.net with any questions. WILL YOU BE A SPONSOR FOR RCIA? The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is the process by which we welcome persons who are inquiring about the Catholic Faith and prepare them for Baptism, Confirmation, and full Communion with the Catholic Church. The entire St. Aloysius family plays a vital role in this process of holy hospitality. Participants rely on your prayers, support, and, most importantly, your presence. Members of the parish are asked to serve as Sponsors mentors and guides who encourage and help the participants as their companions as along the Way. At St. Aloysius, we are always welcoming newcomers into the process and we have an continuing need for Sponsors. The need has recently become especially great because of a startling increase in the number of participants. While no special preparation is required, Sponsors should be practicing Catholics who are willing to share their faith and stand with participants during the various rites celebrated at Mass. The time commitment is about one to two hours a week, usually on Sunday mornings after the 9:00AM Mass. This may be last a few months in the case of baptized Christians preparing for Confirmation, or up to a year for those preparing for Baptism. For more information, contact Mark Christian by email at mchristian@staloysiusparish.com or by calling the Church Office. Women s ACTS Retreat Prayer Poster Please pray for the 38 women who will be attending the upcoming St. Aloysius Women s ACTS retreat November 30 th -December 3 rd. A Prayer Poster will be in the back of church for individuals to sign up for a one hour prayer commitment during the retreat. ACTS is an acronym for Adoration, Community, Theology, and Service. In Our Support of the BAA, We Serve Others Together Through the Bishop s Annual Appeal, Bishop Robert Muench helps ensure essential diocesan programs receive crucial funding, extending the love of Jesus Christ to parishioners and diocesan parishes that need the blessings of our faith most of all. It is a work of community-wide commitment. Devoted individuals and Catholic families, each one Moved by Faith, plays a part. I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, Move from here to there, and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you (Mt 17:20b). Perhaps this is the year you decide to increase your gift. If so, we invite you to consider membership in the Crosier Society (for those whose gifts total $500 or more), or the Bishop Ott Society (a tribute to the BAA s visionary founder, for parishioners whose gifts total $1,000 or more). As you pray about your involvement, the detailed information Bishop Muench recently mailed to you will prove very helpful. If you didn t receive a packet, please contact the Office of Stewardship at (225) 336-8790 or stewardship@diobr.org or donate online at www.baabr.org. Together, we continue to make a difference throughout the region. New Parishioners!
