cts stra b A r Call fo 2nd Announcement Acinetobacter 2013 9th International Symposium on the Biology of Acinetobacter June 19 21, 2013 Cologne, Germany www.acinetobacter2013.com
Welcome The genus Acinetobacter comprises a very diverse group of organisms that range from nosocomial pathogens such as A. baumannii and A. nosocomialis to environmental bacteria such as A. calcoaceticus. Many epidemiological aspects of Acinetobacter spp. have been elucidated in the recent past, other aspects including their role within their natural habitat, interaction with host cells, the development of multi-drug resistance, their epidemicity and pathogenicity traits are still underexplored. Recent advances in our understanding of the biology of Acinetobacter have resulted from genomic analysis of these organisms. The increasing importance of A. baumannii as the paradigm of a multidrug resistant, often untreatable hospital pathogen has further drawn the attention of the scientific community to this group of organisms. The aim of the International Symposium on the Biology of Acinetobacter the first meeting of this series was held in 1986 in Manchester (UK) has always been to bring together medical and nonmedical microbiologists as well as clinicians, to stimulate discussion and collaboration, and to provide an international forum to discuss all major aspects of the genus Acinetobacter. Another important goal is to encourage students and young scientists to present their data and discuss these with experts. The 9 th International Symposium on the Biology of Acinetobacter will be held in the beautiful and historic city of Cologne in Germany. We sincerely hope that you will be able to join the rest of the Acinetobacter family in Cologne and become part of this tradition.
