The WCSC prides itself on helping individuals within the community reach their educational goals by providing financial help through the scholarship program. While the scholarship process is competitive, please keep in mind that everyone has different strengths and weaknesses. All applications will be scored fairly, and all of the information you provide will be taken in to account. Finally, make sure that you give your instructors / teachers, counselors, employers, etc. adequate time to fill out recommendations. INFORMATION PURPOSE The purpose of the WCSC Scholarship is to reward high school seniors, in the Wiesbaden Community, for excellence in academic or vocational education and community involvement. ELIGIBILITY Those eligible are high school seniors whose U.S. citizen sponsor is a federal employee, contractor, retiree or active duty member of the U.S. military. The U.S. citizen sponsor must reside and/or work in the Wiesbaden military community at the time of application submission. Applicant must have graduated from an accredited high school or hold a GED equivalent. Applicant must be a valid U.S. ID cardholder. Please include a photocopy of ID CARD. AWARDS Scholarships will be paid directly to the school of choice upon written notification of enrollment. Scholarships will be awarded for tuition only. Persons awarded full scholarships (e.g. ROTC) or attending service academies are ineligible. The award remains valid until May 31, 2012. Any unused amount returns to the WCSC Welfare Fund. All awardees are responsible to ensure that the proper billing address appears on the application. The WCSC Welfare Fund in not responsible for late fees due to incorrect billing information. PRIVACY ACT STATEMENT Under authority of U.S. Title 10, Section 3012, the enclosed personal information will be maintained by the Scholarship Committee for administrative use and released only to the individuals needed to evaluate the application. Disclosure of the information is voluntary; however, failure to disclose all or part of the requested information may hinder evaluation of the application. The application will remain in possession of the Scholarship Committee Chairperson for a period of one year and will then be destroyed. Page 3 of 15
PROCEDURES PROCEDURE FOR APPLICATNTS A. General Information 1. Complete and return the Personal Information Form; sign and date bottom. 2. Type / Print all requested information. Computer printouts are acceptable. 3. Failure to answer all questions or follow directions will result in disqualification. 4. Verify that you have included all required material. 5. Photo copy of ID Card (Front and Back) B. Two current letters of recommendation must accompany the application. 1. One letter must be from a current or former teacher who can address your academic potential, work habits, and character. 2. The second letter should be from someone unrelated to you who has either been an employer or someone who has observed your involvement in the community and can discuss your service, dedication and volunteerism. 3. Letters must be dated within the last 12 months. 4. The forms must be returned in a sealed envelope with the reviewer s signature on the seal. C. A completed Counselor s Worksheet must accompany the application. The counselor will complete the worksheet, place it with an official copy of your transcript into an envelope, seal and sign the envelope, and return it to you so that you can include these with your application. Be sure to arrange with your counselor when you will be able to pick this up. Please note that YOU must provide your counselor with an envelope and an official copy of the transcript. D. An interview or further correspondence with the scholarship committee may be required. E. On separate paper(s), with only your last 4-digits of your SSN placed in the top right-hand corner of the page for identification, answer or provide the following: 1. List the name and location of high schools attended. 2. Using the Employment and Extracurricular Activities Chart, name your primary extra-curricular activities, including sports. Include length of involvement (i.e., the grade or grades during which you participated in the activity) and the actual level of commitment (i.e., number of hours involved per week in the activity). PROCEDURES 3. Also using the Employment and Extracurricular Activities Chart, list and describe any jobs that you have held. Include the duration of employment, the grades during which you were employed and the number of hours per week worked. 4. Using the Community and Volunteer Activities chart, list any community service or volunteer activities in which you have been involved. Please include your length of involvement and level of commitment by giving the grades during which you participate and total hours of participation. Include any offices or leadership positions you have held within the activities named above or not mentioned before. 5. Using the Awards, Achievements and Honors chart, describe any personal, academic or community honors and/or awards you have received. Include recognition such as Employee of the Month, Letters of Appreciation, Dean s List, etc. 6. Choose one of the essay topics below and write an essay of at least 500 words, but no more than 750 words on that topic. Your essay should be double spaced. Be sure to use spell check, grammar check, and have someone you trust proofread your essay before submitting your application packet. Write your last 4 digits of your SSN, not your name, in the upper right hand corner of each page. The responses will be evaluated on style and content. Choose a challenge you experienced in your life being a military family member, and explain how you overcame it and what you learned from it that will help you in the future. Have you experienced a moment of epiphany, as if your eyes were opened to something you were previously blind to? Describe this moment and how it changed you or your worldview. Page 5 of 15
