The youngest of three, and the only daughter, she spent much of her childhood staying with her grandmother and great aunt, snowbirds from Minnesota, as well as her grandparents in Pasadena. Cards and board games with her family were often preferred over a Saturday night at the movies with her friends. The attraction to working with seniors came from these very early days where wonderful memories were made. Celebrating 35 years of marriage this July, Mary Jane and her husband Tom reside in Hacienda Heights and are now empty nesters. Two of their three children are married, with one very busy 18-month-old grandson belonging to their oldest son Brent and his wife Melissa. Second son Eric and his wife Jackie are due with their first baby, a boy, expected in early July. Their last is daughter Kristina, who will be married August 2015 to her fiancé Chad. Since 1991, Mary Jane has worked with seniors in some capacity. She began her career teaching piano to residents with hand arthritis. After eight years working in various capacities for the same long-term care company, she decided to make the transition in to assisted living. In 1999, she joined Marriott Senior Living and became a manager for a memory care neighborhood. Loving the assisting living environment, Mary Jane became an Executive Director in 2002, and since then has worked in Independent, Assisted, and Memory Care communities. At one time, her position allowed her to travel across the US, lending a hand to various communities as needed, and she made many new senior friends along the way. She is anxious to join her new family at Belmont Village! Not one to spend much time in her office, Mary Jane is looking forward to getting to know each and every resident on a personal basis as well as the very important team. Please stop by and say hello! Welcome, Mary Jane!

Health News From the Wellness Center June is National Safety Month Falls are one of the leading causes of unintentional injuries in the United States, accounting for approximately 8.9 million visits to the emergency department annually (NSC Injury Facts 2011). Adults 55 and older are more prone to becoming victims of falls, and the resulting injuries can diminish the ability to lead active, independent lives. The number of fall deaths among those 65 and older is four times the number of fall deaths among all other age groups. We can all encourage resident to participate in daily exercise classes. Staying active has shown to reduce fall risks in older adults. Check apartments daily for any tripping hazards. Phone lines and oxygen tubing should never be obstructing a walkway. Residents should always use their walking aide, even inside their apartments. Check to make sure your walker is by your bedside at night. Walkers and canes should be checked for any lose or malfunctioning parts. It is important to alert the medical supply company if there is concern of broken parts. Many times they will quickly send out a technician to resolve any issues. Families, residents, and employees should immediately report any safety concerns in the community. Spills should be reported immediately and attended to swiftly to prevent any slips on wet surfaces. Most importantly try to exercise good judgment and never attempt an obstacle or task that you feel might not be safe handled alone. Don t hesitate to ask for assistance; prevention is key for staying healthy. Wellness Dates June 3: 1 p.m. Location TBA Podiatrist Visit June 10: 1:30 p.m. Town Hall Beyond 50s guest speaker.
