PAGE 4 JAN. NOVEMBER 2006 THE NEW CAMP MEDAL We are proud to present our new camp medal, it will be suspended from a blue and gold ribbon, members can get the medal at a Camp meeting or a Camp Event COMMANDER S COMMENTS I hope everyone had a grand and healthy Thanksgiving. It has been a pleasure serving the camp as Commander. I hope our esteemed Commander to Be will continue the guest speaker series. Harold George author of a book on Ohio Monuments is not available for December meeting but would be willing to speak another time. Also, General Grant would love to come back an visit the camp again. I believe Ms. Day's project needs to be a top priority. Membership, probably the toughest of all projects, needs to continue to grow. In today's world fraternal groups take a back seat to much more pressing concerns. I want to give special thanks to Brother Freshley, Brother Silvis, Brother Graham and Brother Previts for all their help and support this year. We are very lucky to have Brother Previts. Fred is a rock to be relied upon. So is Tim, but he knows it. I want to give thanks to the membership that gave me their support. Thanks to all for allowing me to learn on the job and learn by the mistake and error method. If times were better I would consider continuing. Maybe another term in the future, maybe at that time I would be more apt to get it right. I have been working behind the scenes on the Ohio Military Monuments Board. Now that we have some new leadership, maybe we can see some movement on this issue. I hope our camp can continue the fine reputation it has developed. On the Department level thanks to Commander Freshley and Jr. Vice Graham for their support of the Camp. Tim will keep Garfield Camp's voice loud and strong at Department. Happy holidays to all, In F, L and C, Commander Chris Greene

JAN. NOVEMBER 2006 PAGE 5 Emily Miller Civil War Flag Project Emily Miller received a Proclamation of Special Tribute from Governor Jennifer Granholm, honoring her work to preserve a battle flag carried by the 1st Michigan Engineers and Mechanics Regiment during the civil war. She started to raise the needed $1000 after visiting Lansing and seeing that many of the historical flags were not in good condition, some of them were in several pieces, some of them were destroyed, and some of them were missing. She chose to adopt the1st Michigan Engineers and Mechanics Regiment, of which her great-great-great uncle Ira Wilson was a member. The regiment was responsible for repairing roads, bridges and buildings for the Union, sometimes under fire. Raising the money took a couple of years, but she managed to raise the money at area festivals, at a talk at the Lions Club, collecting bottles and cans, and soliciting historical groups. That is where the James A. Garfield Camp got involved, at a Civil War reenactment, Emily came by the Camp Recruiting / Raffle booth and bought some raffle tickets and discussed with us what she was doing, and at that point the Garfield Camp seen an opportunity to preserve history in reference to our SUVCW motto and donated $100. A copy of the Proclamation will be placed on the Ohio SUV website for viewing.
