OHIO GAR QUILT In 1889 the Grand Army of the Republic post in New Carlisle asked wives of Civil War officers to contribute squares for a quilt. The quilt to be raffled to care for the aged and impoverished veterans of the camp. The wives responded with elaborately embroidered blocks that reflected the women s artistic flairs and talents. The quilt about the size of a double bed, contains relics from Ohio s greatest war heroes, including President Ulysses S. Grant and Benjamin Harrison John Fremont s wife sewed a ribbon from his failed presidential campaign into his square, while General Grant s wife included a piece of his suit as the centerpiece of her design. Raffle organizers began taking bids for the quilt and received a $1,000.00 offer from the governor of California. However the post wanted more money and displayed the quilt of Ohio s centennial celebration of its admittance to the Northwest Territory. People from across the state bought raffle tickets but the winner was a farmer from New Carlisle, J. Quincy Smith who purchased a single raffle ticket for 50 cents. The quilt passed into obscurity until a Pennsylvania man brought the quilt to Sotheby s auction in 1998. The Ohio Historical Society offered to buy the quilt for $17,000.00.
