The exhibition will be on every day - including weekends - until Sunday the 9 th of October, from 9.30am until 5pm. We will announce the winners in each category once the judge has made her decision and we ve had all the votes in for the People s Choice award. We will have calendars for sale featuring the winning photos after the competition wraps up. We will be screening a school holiday movie at 2pm on Thursday the 6 th of October in the Frankland Hall. This week s film is Zootopia, a Disney animated movie released earlier this year about a rookie bunny police officer in a city of various animals. It is a comedy/adventure film rated PG and has a running time of 108 minutes, so we should finish a little before 4 o clock. Bring your own snacks and drinks and either drop the kids off or come along and watch too. It s AGM season, and if you still need a venue for your club/society/company s AGM don t forget that we have a range of facilities at the CRC. Our lecture room is a popular and very affordable choice it can comfortably sit around 20 people as a roundtable event, or even more with a different layout. We have a large screen and can provide a laptop or teleconference facilities, and there is a blank wall ideal for using with projectors. Hot drinks come as standard, but we can also arrange catering or morning/afternoon tea. We have had expressions of interest in an event that we are running in early November with Main Roads about avoiding liability when transporting agricultural equipment around harvest time. The seminar will cover the following topics: Agricultural Vehicles: what they are, statutory limits, permits required and general information Restricted Access Vehicles (RAVs) what they are (Road Trains, B Doubles etc.) and access approvals to use on the road Towed Agricultural Vehicles Requirements for on road use (where permitted), pilot requirements and general information Chain of Responsibility legislation what it is and who is a party in the chain. Page 5, 3 Oct 2016 Women in Ag Dinner a winner On Saturday the 24th of September, the catering firm Fevor presented a beautiful meal of local and native produce which was enjoyed by 50 attendees to the Women in Ag Dinner. This night was a celebration of four women and their role within their own agricultural industry businesses. The first lady to speak was Maud Bonshore, a Community Elder who was awarded and OAM in 2004 for her work in indigenous education. Maud is a lady who is passionate about the betterment of our indigenous population through education. She spoke about her career and then her return with her husband Dudley to the land at Dowrene Farm. The second speaker was our very own Suzanne Watkins who farms with her husband Ron at Payneham Vale in Frankland River. She spoke of her roots in the city and then realising her passion for sustainable farming and organic food production. Wendy Bradshaw who is a consultant in Biodiversity Restoration and Education Services and operates her family farm in Tambellup along with her husband Peter, talked about her venture into Biological farming and the trials and tribulations of starting from the beginning to improve the outcomes from their soils by utilising natural processes rather than artificial inputs. The last speaker was Georgie Kruse who is a lady originally from Albany but has since moved to North Queensland where her and her husband Kim, have established a business in developing biological farm inputs. She talked about their role in training other farmers how to create their own biological system and drastically increasing on farm fertility by utilising readily available ingredients and reducing input costs by up to 80% each year. presentation. The dinner was part of the Food for Thought Festival week that began with the three day bio fertiliser course at Australian Mineral Fertilisers, followed by events with the Cranbrook Primary school with their sustainable vegetable garden, a salt bush and perennial field day at Walsh s farm, the Women in Ag dinner and culminating in the Food for thought Festival at the Frederick Square Sports Club in Cranbrook on Sunday 25th. It was a very busy week which bought new people to our town and was certainly a great show case event for the Shire of Cranbrook. Page 6, 3 Oct 2016 Blackwood Basin Group Named Australia s Best Its s official! The Blackwood Basin Group is the best community based landcare group in Australia! At the recent National Landcare Awards the BBG took out the Fairfax Media Community Group Award, which was judged against similar groups from across the country. After winning the Western Australian Community Group Award in 2015 the BBG was then pitted against the winners from the other states and territories and was ultimately judged as the best in the country. I felt extremely proud to be standing on the stage at the National Landcare Awards representing the Blackwood Basin Group as the Fairfax Media Community Group Winner. Said BBG Chairman Per Christensen who travelled to Melbourne to accept the award. The award is recognition of many years of hard work and dedication shown by the group s employees and community volunteers over the past 25 years. It also recognises the innovated work being undertaken under the Priority Bittern and Waterbird Diversity Enhancement Project where the group has been working to convert historical mining pits to habitat for threatened wetland birds near Greenbushes. The Western Australian Landcare Community was well represented at the awards with 5 of the 9 awards coming to the west including the Landcare Facilitator, Young Landcare Leader and Innovation in Sustainable Farm Practises Awards all going to individuals and organisations within the Blackwood River Basin. SHIRE SNAPSHOT MOSQUITO FOGGING The Shire informs all residents that the fogging of mosquitos in Cranbrook, Frankland River and Tenterden will commence shortly. BAITING PROGRAM The Shire of Cranbrook wishes to advise that there will be a baiting program commencing soon in Cranbrook, Frankland River and Tenterden, targeting rabbits. Club Health Checks The Club Health Check is an online self-assessment tool assisting State Sporting Associations and clubs with overall management, governance and planning. The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) recommends two or three club committee members complete the check together. Any sporting club within the Shire of Cranbrook wishing to apply for financial assistance from the Shire for their project MUST have completed a Club Health Check within the last 2 years. Page 15, 3 Oct 2016 SHIRE SNAPSHOT Phone: 98261008 Fax: 98261090 E-mail: shire@cranbrook.wa.gov.au IMPORTANT INFORMATION: BUSHFIRE WARNING ALERT LEVELS Due to some confusion regarding bushfire alert terminology in the local community, as a result of the Cranbrook townsite being put onto high alert during a bushfire incident last year, the Shire of Cranbrook Evacuation Working Group and Local Emergency Management Committee further investigated the use of the alert terminology used by DFES / DPAW during fire incidents, to see if it can be utilised by the Shire also. These agencies issue alerts for bushfires that threaten lives and property. The alert level changes to reflect the increasing risk to life and the decreasing amount of time you have until the fire arrives. The Shire of Cranbrook Chief Bushfire Control Officer (CBFCO) will now also be using this terminology when issuing Shire SMS fire alerts during fire season. Please educate yourself and your family on what these alerts mean. Should a bushfire be managed by DFES they will also use these alert levels when sending out alerts to the community. With the Shire SMS fire alerts now using the same terminology as other agencies, it is hoped that it will alleviate confusion in the community, should an emergency bushfire event occur into the future. PLEASE REMEMBER Communication systems are not fool proof, you may not get a message or it may be delayed due to infrastructure failure in an emergency event, as was the case in the recent Waroona / Yarloop / Esperance disasters. ALWAYS use your common sense and Leave Early if that is your family plan. If you plan to Stay and Defend ensure that you are WELL PREPARED PRIOR to fire season. BUSHFIRE ALERT LEVELS Advice (BLUE) A fire has started but there is no immediate danger, this is general information to keep you informed and up to date with developments. Watch and Act (YELLOW) A fire is approaching and conditions are changing, you need to leave or prepare to actively defend to protect you and your family. Emergency Warning (RED) You are in danger and you need to take immediate action to survive as you will be impacted by fire. An emergency warning may be supported with a siren sound utilised by the media called the Standard Emergency Warning Signal (SEWS). All Clear (GREY) The danger has passed and the fire is under control, but you need to remain vigilant in case the situation changes. It may still not be safe to return home.. NO COOKING OR CAMPFIRES ALLOWED 1 OCTOBER 2016-30 APRIL 2017 NO CAMPING OR COOKING FIRES The Shire of Cranbrook wishes to advise that: Camping and cooking fires are prohibited within the Shire of Cranbrook from 1 October 30 April each year or unless written permission has been expressly given by the Shire of Cranbrook as is pursuant with the Bush Fires Act 1954 Section 25.1(a) through to 1(d).

Condition CV17 applies not to be used as a through route, local deliveries and pick up s only. The alternate route is via the Albany Highway and Great Southern Highway intersection. If you require access to Cranbrook town for deliveries or pick ups, you require approval from the Shire. The majority of Heavy Vehicles have been using the alternate route. This has made a massive positive impact on the safety concerns of the residents and the maintenance requirements for these roads.
