Sometimes it s hard, as humans, to take the time to look at what is good in our lives instead of dwelling on the negative. This may be why the day was set aside every year, to give us time to reflect on the positive aspects of our lives. I hope everyone enjoys their day and doesn t overindulge on the food. We just have a few color guard events coming up over the next month. As promised, the regular activity is going into its winter hibernation but that doesn t mean we should become relaxed on our recruiting efforts. Be sure to carry League business cards with you at all times. You never know when you may run into a Marine who is interested in joining the Detachment. I want to thank everyone who helped out with the Toys for Tots benefit concert. It seemed to be a success and everyone who attended had a great time. Dick should give a report of how much was raised at the regular business meeting on the 24 th. I want to also thank all of the members who showed up to the many events we had over the Marine Corps birthday and Veterans Day. It was a busy two days. As most of you know, Leonard fell out in the Harford County Executive s Office. By the time we saw him at the emergency room he had stroke #8, but Leonard is a tough cookie and is speaking in a clearer voice and moving his left arm slightly. He will be moved to a rehab facility in Forest Hill by the time this issue goes out to the membership. Stop by and see him if you have a few minutes. Remember our December business meeting will be on the 15 th of December. It will be a very brief meeting followed by our annual holiday festivities in the lounge. Bring family, friends or any Marines who may be interested in getting to know us! Semper Fi Evie Remines Commandant Harford County Det. 1198
Page Page 2 2 Comments from the Sr. Vice Commandant I hope your 240 th Birthday Celebration of our beloved Marine Corps was as good as mine. Lots of opportunities to get out there and participate in the festivities. On November 6 th the Detachment provided a Color Guard for the 6 th Annual APG Marine Corps Birthday Luncheon. This event is open to all our MCL membership and is held at Ruggles Golf Course (which is located outside the fence line, so no DoD ID card is required to attend). I d love to see more of our MCL membership attend next year. On 10 November we held a Cake Cutting Ceremony and pot luck dinner at our home, the Jarrettsville VFW. Looks like this might become an annual event. The Detachment Raised the Marine Corps Flag on 10 November at the Harford County Administration Building and County Executive Barry Glassman presented the Detachment with a Proclamation. We had a nice color photo in The Aegis (11 Nov edition) and Harford County Government also posted photos on their Facebook page. On 10 November I had the privilege of going to Perry Point with the Detachment and other volunteers for Veterans Day. We visited the residents, handed out VA Challenge Coins and letters from local school children. It was a very rewarding experience and I recommend every member try and make a visit. Who knows, we might be residents there one day and a visit from a fellow veteran might just brighten your day. We sponsored a fantastic Toys For Tots Benefit Concert on 8 Nov. The Jarrettsville VFW was packed and we received a lot of toys & monetary donations. Great job Chairman Art Shellhouse and to all the members who came out to volunteer or just enjoy the concert. The position for Detachment Adjutant On Veterans Day our Color Guard posted the Colors at Mission BBQ in Perry Hall. They really support vets! After a great Mission BBQ lunch we headed over to Oak Crest Retirement Community for a Marine Corps Birthday Cake Cutting Ceremony where our oldest Marine was 98 years young. He joined the USMC in the 1930 s and is retired from the Corps. Sharp as a tack and some great sea stories. On 8 November I was honored to attend the Dedication of two memorial walls at Hereford High School for two Marines who were KIA (Cpl Joshua Snyder and LCpl Norman Wally Anderson III). This is exactly the type of Memorials that the MCL should support. EVERY Marine from Harford County/Northern Balto County should be honored with some sort of Memorial. We do honor Fallen Marines by listening them of our website. What else can we do? It is our duty as MCL members. The Detachment should actively seek out families of the fallen (of all our wars/conflicts) and see how the MCL can assist in perpetuating their legacy. I would love for someone to step forward and spearhead this initiative. Don t forget to spread the word about our LOCAL Harford County Toys For Tots program. Many people support the program but never realize the TFT boxes they see around the county are collected locally and distributed to local families right here in Harford County. More info can be found at www.toysfortots.org, just filter down to HARFORD to locate local program info, make donations with a credit card, locate volunteer forms, receive boxes or to assist a family in need (they have to apply online). By using the National TFT website everything can be tracked by the Local Area Coordinator Gene Wlock and he can then effectively accomplish his mission. We have also appointed a Detachment 1198 TFT Chairman. Jimmy Catonzaro will be our Det Liaison with Gene Wlock. If you need TFT assistance, Det members are encouraged to work through Jimmy Catonzaro. Happy Thanksgiving! Email address Craig.Reeling@MarylandMarines.org Please update your email contact list. Semper Fi. Craig Reeling Sr. Vice Commandant

Detachment 1198 Page 9 Cell Phones for Soldiers We have supported our deployed troops by collecting 81 phones in the past month. To date that is over 2361 cell phones. These phones are sent to a collection point and exchanged for telephone calling cards which are sent to troops overseas. This enables them to call family and friends at no cost to them. If you have collected any phone donations, please be sure to bring them to the next business meeting. Art Romain,
