Lana Waschka from Williams High was selected as a Park Scholar from North Carolina State University. Park Scholars of the Class of 2017 are comprised of 45 students selected from nearly 1,650 candidates from North Carolina and the United States. Winners of this prestigious scholarship receive a full 4 year scholarship and also receive a generous stipend toward personal expenses, a new computer, and access to grants to pursue research, service, and artistic projects, as well as alumni funded travel grants to study abroad. Park Scholars are also mentored by top faculty members of the North Carolina State University staff. Meredith Miller, senior at Western High was named one of 48 students nationwide as a recipient of the Morehead Cain Scholarship to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill! As a Morehead Cain Scholar, Meredith has earned a full four year academic experience including summer enrichment opportunities at home and abroad. Only the top 3 percent of applicants are selected for the oldest merit based scholarship program in the United States. In addition to being named a Morehead Cain Scholar, Meredith Miller was selected as a Park Scholar from North Carolina State University! She has chosen instead to accept the Morehead Cain. Vidal Morales Santos from Graham High earned the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation! This national award allows Vidal to select any full four year undergraduate major at any college or university of his choice. The Gates Millennium Scholarship also includes opportunities for leadership development and mentoring from top academic scholars in his field of study. Vidal plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with his scholarship award. The Morehead Cain, Park Scholar and Gates Millennium scholarship programs are all merit based awards for students with outstanding academic promise, leadership abilities, character and service accomplishments. Congratulations on your accomplishments!

Western High Rod Butler, Master Chief USN (Ret) High academic achievement. Leadership potential. Honor, Courage, and Commitment. These are some of the traits that Western Alamance High School seeks and attempts to instill in its NJROTC cadets. These are also the traits sought by the nation s military academies. Western Alamance High School s Gilliam Hill is heading to the United States Coast Guard Academy after earning nearly one million dollars in scholarship money. He was also offered a four year ROTC scholarship to North Carolina State University in addition to receiving appointments to the Air Force Academy and the Naval Academy. His heart, however, is with the Coast Guard. For the past four years he has been pursuing a service academy. After visiting all four service academies, he applied for and accepted the opportunity to spend a week at each service academy over the summer of 2012 utilizing the service academy summer seminar program. As he visited each academy, he knew that the Coast Guard Academy would be his first choice. Gilliam joined the school s Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program as a freshman to gain insight into military life and the various career paths that were available. He came to appreciate how Western Alamance NJROTC cadets grew and matured academically and socially while in the program, and how everyone supported each other. This environment allowed him to focus more clearly on his own personal life goals. Cadet Hill will head to the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut on 1 July 2013. Congratulations Gilliam! Larisa Hamilton, senior at Eastern High, is the owner of a perfect record 13 years of school at South Mebane, Woodlawn Middle and Eastern High with perfect attendance: Read all about it in the Times News. Larisa is headed to UNC Pembroke hopefully for another 4 years of perfect attendance! Congratulations! http://www.thetimesnews.com/news/top news/13 years of public education and not an absence inthe books 1.154385
