Western High Rod Butler, Master Chief USN (Ret) High academic achievement. Leadership potential. Honor, Courage, and Commitment. These are some of the traits that Western Alamance High School seeks and attempts to instill in its NJROTC cadets. These are also the traits sought by the nation s military academies. Western Alamance High School s Gilliam Hill is heading to the United States Coast Guard Academy after earning nearly one million dollars in scholarship money. He was also offered a four year ROTC scholarship to North Carolina State University in addition to receiving appointments to the Air Force Academy and the Naval Academy. His heart, however, is with the Coast Guard. For the past four years he has been pursuing a service academy. After visiting all four service academies, he applied for and accepted the opportunity to spend a week at each service academy over the summer of 2012 utilizing the service academy summer seminar program. As he visited each academy, he knew that the Coast Guard Academy would be his first choice. Gilliam joined the school s Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program as a freshman to gain insight into military life and the various career paths that were available. He came to appreciate how Western Alamance NJROTC cadets grew and matured academically and socially while in the program, and how everyone supported each other. This environment allowed him to focus more clearly on his own personal life goals. Cadet Hill will head to the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut on 1 July 2013. Congratulations Gilliam! Larisa Hamilton, senior at Eastern High, is the owner of a perfect record 13 years of school at South Mebane, Woodlawn Middle and Eastern High with perfect attendance: Read all about it in the Times News. Larisa is headed to UNC Pembroke hopefully for another 4 years of perfect attendance!
