The 2009 Mather Alumni Scholarship Mather seniors are getting ready to apply for the Mather High School Alumni Scholarship. Applications are due on March 6, 2009. Last year we received 27 applications, all from very worthy applicants. This year we anticipate receiving more. The Scholarship Committee will meet to review of the applications in early April. If you would like to join this

Page 3 of 7 committee please complete the volunteer form on our website. Last year Charna Halpern (Class of 1970) created a unique scholarship for a Mather High School student. This scholarship is for admission to their Summer Intensive program. The Summer Intensive condenses the entire io Theater school of thought into five incredible weeks. This year's recipient will be selected in April by the Scholarship Committee. Thank you, Charna, for offering this exceptional opportunity. Another academic scholarship, the Zeolite scholarship, is offered by alumni from the Class of '64 and February, '65. To learn more about this scholarship, contact Jan Gordon at Barry950@aol.com. Volunteer Today! Become a judge at the History Fair! February 21, 2009 8:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Make a memorable impact on the lives of some very talented students by volunteering as a judge for the History Fair. The theme of this year's fair is "The Individual in History (Chicago)". It is a part of a citywide History Fair, sponsored by the Newberry Library. Ten Mather students will be selected to participate at a regional fair that will be held at the University of Illinois Chicago. Share your knowledge and excitement about Chicago history. As a judge you will have the opportunity to provide feedback on how well students have prepared their projects depicting Chicago history. You will evaluate how the posters look aesthetically and discuss with them what the students learned through the process. And, please join us for lunch after the judging. The History Fair is a wonderful way for Mather alumni to interact and get to know the Mather students. E-mail us to learn more. Calling all Musicians!! Mather Alumni invited to participate in the Spring Cabaret! Alumni are invited to join the Mather orchestra for this year's Spring Cabaret. The show, titled ChiCaberet, will exclusively feature the music of Bob Fosse and Kander and Ebb. The Spring Cabaret will be held March 19 and 20, 2009 at 6:30 p.m.

Page 4 of 7 All interested musicians should email orchestra teacher, Christian Smith. There will be only one rehearsal. Join the Alumni Speaker's Directory Teachers request classroom speakers throughout the year. To help fulfill these requests, we are developing an Alumni Speaker's Directory. We are looking for alumni from all professions who are willing to share their expertise with the Mather students in all grades. Interested alumni are asked to complete a registration form. Please click here to download the form, fill it out and email it to Carol Gordon. Help Mather seniors with their college application essays! Theresa Schiltz, the school Librarian, is recruiting volunteers to review college essays and provide feedback to the students: Tuesday mornings (10:15 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.) and Thursday afternoons (1:30 pm. - 4:00 p.m.) in the School Library, beginning February 3rd. Apply for this volunteer opportunity by submitting a paragraph describing why you want to participate in this program and work with the students. Please submit your paragraph directly to Theresa Schlitz at tsschiltz@cps.edu by January 31st. She will be in touch with all applicants the first week of February. For additional information, please contact Ms. Schiltz or e-mail Carol Gordon, Alumni Volunteer Program Director. Calling All Poets! April is National Poetry Month. Activities are in the planning stages. A writer's workshop, storytelling and different bilingual activities will be part of the festivities. The Mather Librarians invite all alumni to join the fun. Currently activities are planned for Saturday afternoons and early evening during the week. If you have an interest in poetry please contact the Librarians, Ms. Schiltz or Ms. Wright. You can also get your name on the list by contacting us. Alumni Spotlights Different Professions at the 2008 Career Fair The Career Fair was held on Friday, November 21, 2008 in the large and

Page 5 of 7 small gymnasiums. Thirteen Mather Alumni attended and offered information about their careers. Mather students learned about professions, such as accounting, teaching, journalism, banking and aviation. The alumni were excited about describing their professions to the students and sharing stories as students with fellow alumni. Thank you to the following alumni who gave their time: Jennie Spallone (1967), George Karagiannis (1984), Alan Solomon, Brooke Benjamin (1988), Teri Silverman Rudich (1966), Cary Rosenthal (1978), Brian Zeid (1992), Barbara Thompson (1971), Fran Abramson (1967), Steven Papageorge, Robert Smoller (1964) and Natasha Peric. Joining us this year was Coach Don Fontana, who talked to the students about his career as a firefighter and paramedic. Alumni were Judges at the 2008 Science Fair The Science Fair was held on Saturday, December 12, 2008 in the Mather cafeteria. Congratulations to the first place winner, senior Marzieh Salehitazangi. Her project was entitled "Are Stem Cells Present In Prostate Epithelium?". She and the other runners up will be competing in the Area 19 Science Fair at Northeastern University on Friday, January 23, 2009. Good luck to all these future scientists. Alumni said how impressed they were by the variety of exhibits. Thank you to the following alumni who were judges at the Science Fair: Arni Miller (1967), George Karagiannis (1984), David Kaplan (1975), Bryan Kent Wallace (1988), Ivy Kroman (1973), Jennifer Roberts (1988) and Janice Abelman. Also serving as judges were Aakash Chokshi (2008) and Ijaz Mohideen (2008), two of the six finalists that made it to the Area 19 Science Fair last year. Aakash had also made it to the city finals. It was terrific having them back.
